Some of you ancients may remember playing this as a kid, I however, only bought it about 6 months ago and I love it. Story It's 2161 and the story takes place on the western coast of California. You are known as the Vault Dweller of Vault 13 and shit just got real. The water purifying chip for the vault broke and the overseer, being a total asshole as usual in Fallout titles, sends you out to find another in the middle of nowhere for the slim chance that somebody in Southern California happens to have a water purifyer chip. You have 150 ingame days to do this, initially in the first version, you had 150 days to complete the game. You also have 500 days to complete the game or mutants rush vault 13 and break all your shit. The water chip is only the first part of the main quest, the main quest goes on for fucking ages. Gameplay Fallout plays as a realtime RPG, but when in combat it becomes turn based. Fallout is incredibly non-linear, the only thing forcing you to do the main quest is the time limit. Fallout was originally going to use the GURPS system, but thankfully used the SPECIAL system instead. A lot of people recognize this fact but do not know the difference: GURPS A Dungeons and Dragons style, the first system to employ attribute points where the player chooses how their character is built. The attributes available are strength, dexterity, intelligence and health. Secondary attributes are hit points, will, perception and fatigue (imagine fallout with that shit). This system does not include traits or perks. SPECIAL Heavily based on GURPS, the attributes are strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck (hence SPECIAL). Perks can be used which improve the player's skill points or special abilities slightly. Traits offer tradeoffs of advantages and usually disadvantages. Alright, I have Fallout 3 and never played this, why should I? 1. Being the first Fallout game in the series, it has to set the story and scene otherwise nobody will get what the hell it's on about, so you get some nice backstory in fallout. 2. Awesome encounters. If your luck is high enough (9 or 10), you can encounter a crashed UFO with a painting of Elvis inside you can find Doctor Who's Tardis a Godzilla footprint with a crushed peasant inside A wild herd of Brahmin, you feel there is something wrong... (the text says "Moo, I say") 3. Hilarious low intelligence gameplay. If your character has low intelligence (less than 4), Fallout suddenly becomes hilariously difficult to play. Aradesh, the guy who gives you your first side quest, shrugs you off and all of the villagers at Shady Sands pity you for your retardedness. This makes it impossible to obtain 90% of the side quests. Your possible dialogue choices become gibberish such as "wubba-wubba?", here are some wiki quotes: I don't care if you were dropped on your head as a kid. No guns in the city limits. - NCR Gate Guard. Glug glug glug glug glug glug! - the Vault Dweller *Snfff* You big meenie... *snff*... me go sumplace 'n have partee wiff clowns... *snfff*... and ice cream... and kake... and me no invit meen peuple like YOU! - the Chosen One (Fallout 2) Another little gem is that there is a retard in fallout 2, but if you are playing with a low intelligence character, his dialogue suddenly seems very intelligent. 4. Engaging gameplay. Although there are some hilarious parts in Fallout, the gameplay itself is amazing. There are loads of skills to choose from, I wish Fallout 3 had every single one of them. There are also a wider variety of traits and perks to choose from (in Fallout 3, Traits and Perks are merged and just called Perks). If you have played Fallout 3, it is obvious the Brotherhood of Steel are the good guys, but it is pretty ambiguous in Fallout, which makes your choice to align with them less influenced by the fact that they have a sign over their head saying "good guys". 5. Wider variety of choices in character creation. Look how much shit there is there man, half of the stuff isn't even useful but goddamn Also, recognise this guy? (Fallout) How about this guy? (Fallout 2) How about THIS guy? (Fallout 3) VAPORISE CHILDREN by shooting at them in THE EYES Where can I buy this? Steam store for £6.99 www.gog.com for $10 I RECOMMEND GOG. It is pretty much steam (you can download it any time, anywhere, the game is tied to your account) and gog.com update the game itself so it is always compatible with newer systems. If I've missed out anything major or awesome, just leave a comment
I thought there already was a thread about Fallout... Oh wait, it was FO3. FO2 <3.
I've never tried playing the first Fallout but I did play the second. I'm going to install now. :keke:
Ugh. Fallout. Yeah, great game alright. :barf: Ok seriously, I'm sure it's a good game. The problem is that I have absolutely no idea how to play it. When I tried it on Gametap, I was just able to tediously shoot a few cockroaches and travel to a couple of nearby towns. I eventually made it to the vault I was told to go to and found an elevator that wouldn't work because I needed a rope (or something like that). Having no idea how to get a rope and being tired of watching my character inch his way across the screen, I just quit. It's obvious I'm doing something wrong.
I never played Fallout 1, because I heard that there's a time limit in which you have to complete the game.

If you destroy the super mutant base before the 500 day limit is up then you can totally free roam with no time limit.
I never played Fallout 1, because I heard that there's a time limit in which you have to complete the game.
You can buy water (time) from a merchant if I remember correctly. [editline]01:41PM[/editline] Also I love the waterchip easteregg in fallout 2 :v:
Finally a thread about Fallout 1 & 2.
Note: Fallout 3 is set about 110 years after Fallout 1. Harold is therefore ~200 years old in Fallout 3.
i still need to finish up fo 2 and play fo 1 not to mention tactics, i have the complete box, why havent i installed this yet? *rates himself boxxy* i loved 2 so i'm installing. I like how half of the OP is talking about how you can be retarded.
I never played Fallout 1, because I heard that there's a time limit in which you have to complete the game.
A patch removed the time limit [sp]after you fix the water chip[/sp]
Fallout 1 is a lot easier than Fallout 2, btw. FO 2 is more polished, fun and bigger though.
Fan-fucking-tastic, what a brilliant game this is.
I recently bought the original trilogy to relive the good days of gaming.

I remember playing a demo in 1997 or 1998 can't quite remember but I never bought it is it worth it?
Thanks for giving me boxes instead of helping out. Really, you guys are the best.
i got trapped by like a hundred rad scorpions or whatever, and i just hate the combat system, its purely luck: you miss you miss you miss rad scorpion crits you for 200, you die
It's also based on the fact that there is no global scaled levelling system like in FO3, you have to run from radscorpions until you level up literally like twice and then they are piss easy and you mow them down in their packs. Just stay in low levelled areas to start with and if a massive pack appears, run. You should have more action points than them so there is no reason for them to catch up with you. This is why I love FO1, it feels dangerous, you can't just kite enemies with a chinese assault rifle like in FO3, it's fight or flight.
Is there a working demo I can download? I want to see if I can get the hang of the gameplay before I decide on buying it.
Is there a working demo I can download? I want to see if I can get the hang of the gameplay before I decide on buying it.
I doubt it, Fallout was made in the time where demos were rare, and Interplay are pretty much bust and not bothered with Fallout 1 anymore.
I can easily get the strongest weapon and the strongest armor at the beginning of both Fallout and Fallout 2.
There is a demo for fallout 1, it takes place outside the story I thought. It should be good if you want to know what the gameplay is like. I'll look it up [editline]08:18PM[/editline] Found it : http://download.cnet.com/Fallout-demo/3000-7539_4-10008318.html
just google it, second link
I can easily get the strongest weapon and the strongest armor at the beginning of both Fallout and Fallout 2.
You can also complete the game in like 20 days but we don't tell people *shhhh*
I bought this a week or so ago. Not sure what I'm supposed to do after I get the water chip though.
time limit sucks though
