Roguelikes, if your above the age of 10 you've probably 've heard of 'em. Now, the one that started it all, Rouge, gave birth to a game called Hack. THAT game gave birth to Nethack, in alot of people's opinions the best rougelike.
The premise of alot of roguelikes is: Go adventure, have fun, kill monsters, but don't die. If you die in most rougelikes, that's it. Poof. Your character who you put SO much work in is gone. (Except Elona, which is a japanese rougelike but that's not what we're discussing)
The premise of this roguelike, Nethack, is: get amulet from your god in a laaarge dungeon, don't die, meet shopkeepers, buy things from shopkeepers to help you on your quest, kill monsters, fuck shit up, oh yeah and never ever leave the dungeon unless you want to end your game.
This game can be played in ASCII (classic roguelike) or graphical, which I love. Don't expect the graphics of a game that was originally in ASCII to be amazing though.
There is classic DnD style char creation. Pick race gender role and alignment. After that just try to survive while descending the dungeon, towards the ultimate goal, the amulet.
For newbies: g is to get stuff, most things are automatically picked up, w to wield/wear things, and when you get something it'll give you the shortcut it uses as an item. I is for inventory as well, run into things to kill them, f is to fire bows, z is to zap a wand (needs to be magical), Z is to cast a spell. Press ? for the help file.

You also HAVE to extract it to a folder.
Just FYI, it's rogue not rouge. Rouge is a type of make-up.
That said, I adore roguelikes and may very well try this.
Oh, thanks.
Classic. I love Nethack, it's probably my second favorite roguelike (IVAN being the first because of how hard it tries to kill you all the fucking time).
IVAN? I'll try that out.
I love Slash'em, a mod (expansion?) to nethack. Especially the necromancer.
I took a golden potion and now I'm blind. I stumbled around for half an hour and by the time In died I'd killed 200 things and I thought I was hitting my dog.

Rouge is also French for Red
I'm still not sure I understand what a Roguelike is. :raise:
iPope, never trust unknown potions.
1) If you're going to download it and use the graphical tileset, use Nethack XP.
2) Otherwise, play the original text version. Get used to the text.
3) Play on nethack.alt.org through telnet.
4) Become pro.

Only drink random potions if you're sure you're going to die. And before that, you should do this:
1) Engrave "Elbereth"
2) Doesn't work? #pray
3) Doesn't work? Read random scroll.
I hate text version tbh, that's why I love graphical.

The text version is for pros.
But if you like graphical, you could check out Nethack - Falcon's Eye.
