I played The Void yesterday. It's a good game, not really to my tastes, mind you, but it is incredibly innovative. The game revolves around colour, and sort of reawakening a depressed, dying world with colour. Although the game didn't really fit my tastes, it did make me begin to think about how similar to the last game most of the latest releases are.
Call of Duty has been a series since 2003. Back in 2003, it was a singleplayer focused World War 2 shooter based on the Quake 3 engine. At the time, it was hugely innovative. It used ironsights, something that had never been seen before, at least not in a widespread way. The original Call of Duty game was praised heavily by magazines, and later spawned a sequel, Call of Duty 2. Then another sequel, Call of Duty 3. Then another sequel, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Up to this point the games had been loosing their innovative approach to the shooter genre, as it was become more and more widespread as more and more Call of Duty games were released. It got so bad that practically every game released after the fourth in the series, Modern Warfare, was essentially a reskin of Call of Duty 4. Yet people still buy the game, the same game, the exact same, again and again and again.
This was fine, because people who didn't like the idea of Call of Duty could simply avoid it, but then the clones started coming. EA released the latest in the Medal of Honor series, set in a Modern Battlefield instead of the familiar plains of World War 2. Then Battlefield: Bad Company 2 wasn't really anything new. Then the countless indie games that didn't bring anything new to the formula: Blacklight: Tango Down, Breach. The list goes on.
It's not just in the first person shooter genre that innovation is dying either, here's a fun fact for you. The first Need for Speed game, a popular series in the racing genre, was released on the 31st of August, 1994. The latest release of Need for Speed was the remake of Hot Pursuit. It was released in 2010. The Need for Speed franchise has spread over sixteen years. Sixteen years, and yet, through all that time, nothing but flimsy lack of innovation from the series.
I'm not saying that innovation isn't out there, but with the endless releases that look to be exactly like previous games, such as Homefront, which is coming rather soon, innovation is being well covered.
Gaming isn't going to get innovation, and with no innovation, there is no variety, with no variety, there is no reason to play any more. No reason to play anymore could end gaming.
We need innovation, however, I highly doubt that many games will find their feet in this Modern Warfare Shooter 64: Death to the Cows of Dunkirk Field 3 world. A shame really, because the same old same old is getting quite stale now.
Because companies are scared to innovate due to too many dumbfuck CoD addicts that dislike change and only like games with 40000 attachments, retarded camo and reskinned engines.

I love how the engine in Call of Duty is simply a reskin every single time, and now they're trying to cover up bad texture work with excessive overuse of shading and shader effects.
Call of Duty is not only uninnovative, but it also constitutes an extreme lack of effort by its developers every time a [del]new game[/del] reskin of the previous game is released.
No innovation? Are you blind?
Did you see how many guns and attachments gets added each CoD release? Ofcourse some developer's don't innovate, like Valve.
I mean, Portal 1 > 2. What really changed? Coop mode, big whoop. I could play coop in 2008 with CoD: WaW.
Left 4 dead? Shameless CoD zombie mode clone. CoD is really innovating each release. And small time developers like Valve are shamelessly copying them.

I assume that was sarcastic.
Oh thank god I was beginning to think the hundreds of other posts talking about Call of Duty stagnating and being the death of the entire video game medium wasn't enough
I'm just a little bit tired of mordern and future settings. I want more 19th and 20th century stuff.

Sarcasm etc does not communicate well via the internet so I rated you funny in the hopes that was a joke. :v:
Battlefield 3 seems pretty innovated.
Because the general gaming mass doesn't care about innovation. As long as they get their tried and true gameplay, they're perfectly content for the time being. Only when they start to get bored will we see the next new "fad".
Even alot of the nerds on the internet who cry out for innovation still end up buying the "casual crap" that they speak out against. Really, we've got no one to blame but ourselves.
Battlefield 3 seems pretty innovated.
Nah, just another CoD clone. They make the map bigger and give you airplanes, big whoop. If I can't have my 25 kill streak tactical nuke it's not worth the money.

I don't buy them, they get my money if they deserve it.
Greedy shits.

You sound like one of these CoD fanboys.
You sound like one of these CoD fanboys.
I'm not a fanboy, I just think CoD is better than anything else without giving other games a chance because I am afraid it might sway my opinion about CoD's superiority.

I don't think CoD is a great game, it has been the same game for about 3 years now, only other maps and a slim change to the gameplay, like other weapons and such. They should really think of something new then just leveling up and killing and that's it. Hate it, I quit Bops at level 31 because it became boring, it was all the same.

No, the guns dont even change.
[editline]28th February 2011[/editline]
And the maps get smaller.

Lol only level 31? I bet you are terribad. Invent new things? you mean like new perks and killstreaks, deeper levels of character and weapon customization, and all new modes including:
Wager Matches: One in the Chamber, Gun Game, Sticks and Stones, Sharpshooter
Combat Training: Test your skill solo or Co-Op with friends against AI enemy players.
Meanwhile you are fapping over Battlefield 3 because of what? it has some vehicles and a map that has been pasted x 8 to make it big enough for some crappy jets? Doens't sound exciting at all.
I'm not a very bad player, I mean, it's just that I don't like that it's the same all over again, that's why I quit it. It may have gotten some new gamemodes, but yeah, it's all the same, killing killing killing. Also, I never played BF3. I like games like Minecraft, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dead Space 2, things with actual difference in the gameplay. For instance, Minecraft, you can do what you want, free play, etc. Call of Duty = You can only kill other players with your guns, level up, and that's pretty much it really.
so you pick a few games that are really popular and use that as your point as being lack of innovation?
there's hundreds of games out there that are innovative, it's just that "innovation" seems to rhyme with gimmicky shit for you and games aren't fun when they revolve around a single feature, no matter how unique it is (remember timeshift and singularity?)
infact the entirety of your argument seemed to be based off CoD which is fucking stupid to use as an example in this case
Lead Designer: GUYS WE NEED AN ORIGINAL IDEA FOR MW3, PITCH YOUR IDEAS COME ON
The Guy that came up with the plot for the last 2 games: "Russians"
Some Fag Employee: "YES, AND LAST YEARS THEME WAS SNOW, THIS YEAR WE RESKIN THE SNOW TO BE SAND"
Lead Designer: FUCKING GENIUS, now we need a theme for the trailer.
Another Fag Employee: Let's rip off all successful games and use 'Invaders Must Die' by The Prodigy.
Lead Designer: YES, and now to online.
Same Fag employee as before: Add more useless perks, sugar-coat with some new camo options and introduce a new killstreak.
Lead Designer: Well fuck, the game is perfect, we are done with the gameplay and plot, now to go explain it to the monkeys texturing and coding the game.
Duke Nukem Forever better have some innovation, I want it so bad.

Minecraft is fugly.
Like anyone that played Dead Space 2 I jumped into Deathmatch right away, but threw away the game when I saw there were no kill streaks.
Drive Unlimited 2 is inferior to CoD's vehicle sections.

You are judging games by their graphics? You are bad.
You are throwing away a game because it has no killstreaks? You are evil.
You really are a CoD fanboy, just admit it.
Nah I don't even own any cod game except for the first modern warfare.
You're a faggot for having bought blops though

Well, the worst is that nobody is buying innovative games. (Mirror's edge for exemple) And thus, they die.

Go to the Battlefield 3 thread, read the OP and say that again.
