• Video Games and Sniper Scopes...

We've all played an FPS game with a sniper rifle in it, who hasn't? It's always enjoyable to scope in and pop some heads from a distance. But one thing has consistently bugged me about almost every FPS sniper rifle: the view through the scope. As you can see, this scope is little more than a crosshair. It is missing the primary point of a scope: magnification. Even though your view may be zoomed in, the scope itself isn't actually magnifying anything. When looking through a scope, your entire view including peripheral vision would not be zoomed in, only what is being viewed through the scope. Very few games I've played have represented sniper scopes accurately like this. It really bugs me because it is actually a very cool looking feature, with no negative repercussion on the gameplay. This begs the question: why don't more developers implement it? Mods like Smod and Insurgency were able to do it, so why not more retail games? Even worse than zooming your entire perspective in, is when they simply cop out and put black over whatever isn't in the scope, suggesting that you are an idiot who puts the scope right up against his eye socket. What are your thoughts about the subject? Do you prefer games with the standard zooming method, or with scope magnification? What other games are there that have accurately functional scopes?
As long as it get the job done.
Maybe to give the sniper some cons, so while they're scoped people can sneak up on them.
It would be a cool feature to have. But as with many games, features sometimes come at an expense..
2 mods for hl2; insurgency and resistance & liberation.
it's to simulate having the scope occupy the entire view of your eye, which is how you're supposed to target keep left eye closed, hold scope about three and a half inches from face you don't hold it out in front of you like in that second picture [editline]12:32AM[/editline] got a screen of the mod ones?
Red Orchestra has this. It's awesome.

Killing Floor did it right with the crossbow scope, and it looks good. I would like to see it implemented in more games, but it's not something I'd ever lose sleep over.

Because apparently, it's resource intensive. [editline]12:41AM[/editline] The way SMOD does it, with an RT camera.

I'm kinda surprised ArmA 2 doesn't have the scopes like this considering its realism (I was playing ArmA 2 alllll day lol).
Isn't that just a reflex scope (referring to the Crysis pic in OP)?
Red orchestra has this too. It's honestly not something to get all up about. Hell, most video games don't even have 3D scopes. Just the scope surrounded by the black texture.
And it's not like the crosshair on a scope in real life is actually where the bullet will go. That is in every game I've played. :/

i love it in red orchestra. feels right.
To have this scope, you have to render the scene twice, which takes up resources.
I'm kinda surprised ArmA 2 doesn't have the scopes like this considering its realism (I was playing ArmA 2 alllll day lol).
Engine limitations, not to mention it's a damn resource sapping feature. On my old PC using a magnified scope in Insurgency or Red Orchestra sucked the framerates down to the single digits. But that's a very small loss considering that the mil-dots and stadia markings actually work.

Red Orchestra did it really good, check that out
Awful music you used, lad.
lol I know :P I was tripping balls the first time when the bolt action sound matched the song so I thought it'd be a cool idea to show my friends.
r&l sniper.
I hate when games get "realism" way off and make it so you literately have to get closer to the screen to see shit. Its my main pet peeve with a lot of fps's they put the scope so damned far away so it takes barely any of your screen, prime example the ACOG in cod4 it was small on the screen and the rim and barrel of the scope took up most of it. Also that Insurgency and resistance one are annoying because they love to make the scope dirty, even when anybody who wasn't sufficiently retarded would naturally clean it. Maybe its the developer butthurt about snipers and there sense of balance is to make hard to see shit ironically as a sniper. Also this whole no zooming without scope is annoying as shit because why its zooms in the first place is to simulate focusing your eyes on distant detail, we don't have 40000x40000 pixel moniters to actually focus our eyes on. So unrealistic zooming is more to lifes actual sense of detail, then most "realism" approaches.
SC conviction does this
