So ye this game is the best, it still works on modern Pc's and there's are plenty of awesome mods out there that improve graphics and add new cars and more game play features, I used to play this with a steering wheel taking turns to get the best time against my dad it's a really good game and it supports multilayer.

Here's some images from the 1966 mod showing how good the game can look with mods even though it was made a long time ago. Some Photoshopping was used on some of the images though.

And another thing, In 2004 there was a remake which included new tracks and graphics but there was also a demo released which is the full game withought all the tracks, which is fine because there's a huge database of high quality tracks available and mods come with tracks also. Mods work with the demo but I'm not sure about tracks.
