I haven't seen a thread for The Last of Us for a while now, so I've decided to "reboot" the topic. I'll be telling you all of the information that is released at the moment: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Release Date: TBA 2013 What is The Last of Us?: The Last of Us is an upcoming post-apocalyptic third-person survival action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 3. It was officially revealed on December 10, 2011 during the Spike TV Video Game Awards. Who's Naughty Dog?: Naughty Dog, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Santa Monica, California. Founded by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984 as an independent developer, the studio was acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2001. Gavin and Rubin produced a sequence of progressively more successful games, including Rings of Power for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Way of the Warrior for the 3DO. The latter — a very low-budget but still plausible offering — prompted Universal Interactive Studios to sign the duo to a three-title deal and fund the expansion of the company. Mark Cerny, who had produced Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega, convinced Naughty Dog to focus its new resources on creating a character-based platform game that would fully exploit the 3D capabilities of the new systems. Ultimately, this led to the release of Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation on August 31, 1996. Naughty Dog developed three Crash Bandicoot sequels over the next several years. In January 2001, it was announced Sony would acquire Naughty Dog. After developing Crash Team Racing, the company began working on Jak and Daxter for PlayStation 2. In 2004, Naughty Dog's studio president and co-founder, Jason Rubin, left the company to work on a new project named Iron and the Maiden. In addition to their inhouse game team, Naughty Dog is also home to the ICE Team, one of Sony's World Wide Studios central technology groups. The company's first PlayStation 3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, was released in 2007, its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, in 2009, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, released in November 2011. Naughty Dog is also infamous for having a history of not only developing one game at a time, but only one franchise per console; a trend that has garnered heavy amounts of criticism amongst fans. This lasted until Naughty Dog announced a new IP called The Last of Us at the Spike Video Game Awards on December 10, 2011 on the PlayStation 3, which was in development by a second team at the studio. On November 21, 2011, it was announced on Sony's PlayStation Blog that the Jak and Daxter series would be re-released on PlayStation 3 as part of an HD collection. Released on February 7, 2012, the collection was handled by Mass Media Inc., and brought "720p high definition with crisper visuals, smoother gameplay animation, full stereoscopic 3D to the series", along with support for the PlayStation trophy system. Nature has been reclaiming its land from abandoned cities. The military has the United States under martial law and is keeping everyone in quarantine zones to stay away from the infection. The quarantine zones have many checkpoints, giving body scans for any signs of fungi. Those found with even remote traces of the fungus are euthanized. Joel is a black market dealer within a quarantine zone that sells weapons and drugs. An unknown event occurs where Joel promises a lifelong friend that he will take care of a young girl named Ellie as they escape from the quarantine zone. The two are traveling throughout the United States and are being chased by the military. On the road, there are many scavengers, hunters or harmful people that are trying to look for provisions, and they see Joel and Ellie as an opportunity. The two are constantly trying to fight their way through these people to stay alive and away from the infected and the military. The Characters: As of now, three protagonists in The Last of Us are known. Ellie (AI, NPC) Ellie Summary: Ellie is a 14-year-old female, who co-stars alongside Joel in this post-apocalyptic romp through the United States. Having been born after the fungal infection had already collapsed modern civilization as we know it, Ellie doesn't know a life aside from the high walls of the quarantine zone she was raised in or even perpetual fear. This, of course, sparks within her an obsession with relics from the past culture, such as books and music. This, too, leads to troublesome times at the boarding house she resides in. Something happens in her home that forces her to skip town with Joel. Together they trek west while hiding from the military and surviving other threats. Ellie is shown to be capable, even aggressive, as she travels with Joel. At Naughty Dog's E3 2012 gameplay demo, she is seen picking up a brick and later throwing it at an enemy approaching Joel as he runs out of revolver ammo. At another point in that demo she stabs the back of another enemy who is wrestling with Joel. According to Naughty Dog, Ellie's character is heavily influenced by Mattie Ross from True Grit. She is portrayed as a character who is "coming-of-age" and is under the protection of Joel. "When she is around Joel, she is slightly being corrupted, but in some ways being given the tools to become independent." Her attitude towards Joel is slightly sarcastic. A man in his late 40s, hardened by the atrocities and devastation left by the fungal infection, Joel works as a black market dealer within the quarantine zone, selling drugs and weapons of sorts. According to Game Informer (Issue 227, March 2012), a traumatic event occurs within the quarantine zone that involves Ellie, Joel's companion. Joel makes a promise to a friend that he will take care of her. They become fugitives, having to deal with both dodging the military and surviving The Infected and scavengers, as they continue to travel west through the United States. According to Naughty Dog, Joel's character is heavily influenced by Rooster Cogburn from True Grit. He is portrayed as a "violent character that has gone someplace dark. He is essentially dead inside." Teamed up with Ellie, "He gets a chance at redemption when they are introduced to this kid, this person who still has some innocence left." Earl Brown) is a fellow survivor in the post-apocalyptic wasteland United States and an acquaintance of Joel. It is known that Bill owes Joel "favors" due to a yet-unknown past interaction. Joel plans to cash out on the favor by asking Bill to help in constructing a vehicle from various parts around his property. From the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con trailer it is seen that Bill likely lives alone in a well protected base and is extremely cautious of the infection. So cautious, in fact, that he forcibly searches Joel and Ellie for signs of the infection upon entering his home - going as far as to handcuff Ellie to the wall. Humans are able to inhale the fungus, and it will kill that person eventually. Once that person is dead, the fungus will then mutate through their head and will take control of their body. There is a real fungus called Cordyceps that can infect insects to climb to a certain height, kill it, and then grows out of its dead carcass, eventually releasing spores to infect other insects. One of Naughty Dog's teasers was a clip from BBC's Planet Earth showing this happen to an ant. Although this clip was surrounded by ants, it can infect other insects as well. The fungus is spreads throughout the air and is very contagious. However, the fungus cannot successfully infect a human in a wide open space, it needs a confined room to effectively spread within the human body.Seen in the debut trailer, the fungi infected victims are eating the dead body of the scavenger killed by Joel, which entails that they are seeking food, just as a zombie would. The infected do have some intelligence and they are able to run at a fast rate. Neil Druckmann (Creative Director of The Last of Us) has told IGN that "Quarantine zones were set up by the military as outposts for survivors - a way to escape the ever-growing numbers of infected. Martial law, however, presents its own set of dangers. Citizens are constantly monitored, supplies are scarce and anyone caught breaking the law is executed. In the world of The Last of Us, safety is a relative term." Clearly this "martial law" is unappealing to some, and has led to their disbandment from society (or what's left of it). These groups of survivors must be extreemly tough to deal not only with the scariciety of resources (food, ammunition, etc...) but also the imminent threat of being killed by the ever-increasing number of infected. It is clear from the E3 2012 Gameplay Demo that many of these groups take the "kill or be killed" motto very seriously. If it takes them one bullet to kill you and you have three bullets on you, the decision is easy. Clearly, Joel is fully aware of this, and it has been hinted that he may have even been a part of such a gang at one time. Our two budding protagonists undoubtedly have their hands full in their travels to safety. First Appearance: The Last of Us Sex: Mainly Male Nationality: All Sorts Allies: Eachother, N/A Voice Actor: N/A, All Sorts The Military (AI, NPC, Enemy) The Military Summary: It is confirmed that the military - if you can still even call it that - is also tracking Joel and Ellie's progress through the post-apocolyptic United States. Under a new "martial law," the military aims to contain all un-infected life to various quarantine zones across the country. Life in these zones is a brutal existance, living in constant fear of the fungus and the outside world. There are regular checkpoints throughout these zones where the population is inspected for signs of the infection; if tested positive, the individual is immediately euthanized. All of this is run by the military. Although exact details are not known at this time, it is certain that the military will play a large factor in the day-to-day life of our two protagonists. It is suspected that Joel has a previous history and some bad-blood with the military. First Appearance: The Last of Us Sex: Mainly Male Nationality: All Sorts Allies: Eachother, N/A Voice Actor: All Sorts Multiplayer: While exact details are not yet known, Neil Druckmann (creative director) has confirmed that The Last of Us will contain multiplayer and it will be "very unique." He also confirmed in a Gaming Examiner interview that it will not be a co-op related multiplayer experience in the main campaign; however, no further explanation was given. Gameplay: Gameplay is viewed in the third-person perspective. Players take control of Joel as he protects both himself and Ellie from the veritable threats all around them. Ellie, on the other hand, uses her own wits to stay out of sight from the enemy or help Joel in any way possible. Who Will Be the Main Enemy?: Naughty Dog did announce The Infected and show them in the trailer, but there will not be too many encounters with them. As Joel and Ellie are trying to escape the military, they will constantly be on the run and have to deal with scavengers trying to steal their weapons, provisions, or Ellie herself. There may even be a few run-ins with the military as they catch up with the two. How Will the AI Work?: Naughty Dog is integrating a new AI system called "Balance of Power" that works very realistically compared to their previous games. Since resources are scarce, Joel will not be a frenzied hotshot, squandering very precious ammunition. A single bullet from a pistol can kill an enemy. The sight of any weapon in Joel's hand, even a brick, could be cause for alarm, but enemies will react realistically to the type of weapon in possession. If Joel is holding a handgun, the enemy will err on the side of caution and hide behind cover as necessary. Strength in numbers could let enemies behave a bit more aggressively as they try to flank Joel. Naughty Dog believes the more they humanize and add psychology to the human enemies, the more scary they become. Fallen enemies could work to upset their comrades and galvanize them to push harder. If their efforts bear no fruit, then they will fall back or run. In recent gameplay footage (E3 2012) enemy scavengers are seen shouting out Joel's location as well as communicating with each other vocally. At one point, Joel is also seen taking a hostage at gunpoint and using him as a human shield. One of his comrades pleads for Joel to "let him go". Other Gameplay Aspects?: Unlike Uncharted, health regeneration is not included in the gameplay's framework. To restore health, Joel will have to apply health packs, but trying to find the time to do so simply could invite enemies to launch surprise attacks. Joel is also able to combine materials in his inventory to create useful items. One such example is creating a molotov cocktail out of items in his backpack. He can create these items at any time, even during combat. The game continues to run in real-time as he does so making careful planning necessary to survival. The AI sounds very interesting
The AI sounds very interesting
I can't wait to see the way the act to stressful situations in the game.
The AI sounds very interesting
But probably will end up very disappointing, just like any pre-release AI hype.
But probably will end up very disappointing, just like any pre-release AI hype.
I beg to differ, if you watch the extended demo of The Last of Us, the AI is way smarter that compared to the AI in Call of Duty or Battlefield. The part where the elevator falls and Joel ends up in the water is a good example. In most games the AI that isn't in trouble (Ellie) usually runs off, as opposed to this game, Ellie actually stuck around to see if Joel was still alive.
