Read the above article before reading what I have to say.
This article was written by Game Informer for their satirical section they sometimes have in the magazine. Although it is satire, it does hold some truth to it. A truth gamers these days are so keen on defending and putting on to others. The part I really want to focus on is mainstream gaming. I have friends and I know there are people in this very forum that have this mentality and that's the mentality that if you play popular games like CoD and Halo, you are a 'casual gamer.' They make it seem like a bad thing. It makes it a bad thing to be playing games that are popular. But these people do have valid reasons why they don't like it (most of the time) like they don't like the gameplay. But most of the time they don't like it because it's a [insert popular franchise here] or "X is like Y and Y sucks so X must suck" (This specifically I've recently seen while in the Homefront thread).
These "Hardcore gamers" are really missing out though. Games might be popular but you never know how much fun it is until you try it. I feel like it's because that gaming has gained so much popularity these days, the older (by older I mean playing games much longer) gamers feel threatened by those newcomers who only play these mainstream games. And to those older gamers, I say, don't immediately cast them out if they say they play CoD or Halo. Instead, try convincing him to try the games you play and they games he play. And to those "mainstream" gamers, don't be afraid to diverge from your normal games of Halo. We are all gamers who game for one single reason and that is fun. Gaming offers so much to have fun in different game genres and I think every gamer should experience as much games as possible to achieve fun.
I think the general problem people have with CoD/Halo players is that most of them have an IQ consisting of a single digit and a scary amount of them think their franchise is the first one to do everything.

If you play video games and geniunely care about the industry you are a gamer in my eyes. The idea that people play a video game that happens to be mainstream, and that makes them less of a gamer, is really annoying.
I don't understand why anyone would want to flaunt a 'gamer' status to anyone in the first place... it's a part of my life I like to keep to myself.

Unfortunately, though, some people do actually think like this. I hate people who think like this. If I like to play some Call of Duty on lunch or whatever, that doesn't make me "not a gamer". I enjoy games and think they will eventually succeed at being considered a proper medium alongside films and books, but I can still enjoy some mindless shit once in a while. Hell, one of my favorite games is Saints Row 2, but that's just because it's completely brain-dead fun.
If you play Halo and CoD on a regular basis, more power to you. Hell, if you play nothing but sports games on the Wii, go right ahead. If you're having fun, you're having fun, and that's what games are for. The reason there are so many people with this "hipster" mindset is because of the aforementioned people that play CoD and Halo all the time are generally known to be the most obnoxious and obsessive man-children to ever grace the earth.
