Well I'm here to post my own question but I suppose this could be for people to share general knowledge and discuss the use of command blocks.
My question is: Is it possible to play a sound file from a command block? I'm trying to make a semi-functional bell tower.
I know minecraft doesn't have any bell sounds but I imagine it would be easy enough to play custom ones if the block can actually trigger sounds.
Nope, command block only runs normal commands, and there's no command to play a custom sound. You could probably rig up a few noteblocks to emulate a bell sound possibly.
