A kind friend of mine has ordered UT3 and sent it off to me. It's a boxed copy. How would I go about installing it so that it's automatically updated by steam?

Just that? And if I insert the disc, it will automatically direct to the steam directory?
open steam, click games, click activate product on steam and type the CD key in there.
I don't think you can make non steam games update via steam, but UT3 can be registered and downloaded on steam.
