Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, or "Crawl," is a popular, free roguelike game, focusing on tactics, balance, variety, and a lasting challenge. It's easy to get started, but to win, it's hard as hell (in fact, several levels of hell are well represented in the game).
This thread is a great place for veterans and noobs alike to discuss strategies, and commiserate on their losses. Join us!
What is Crawl??
Dungeon Crawl is a fairly user-friendly roguelike that's all about gameplay. Roguelikes are top-down games, typically using ASCII symbols to build a map, and text describing your/monster's actions (if you've played DF you'll be familiar with this kind of thing!). Two big features of roguelikes are randomly-generated games, and permadeath. If you die, that's it you're gone- and the next game you play will be set in a completely new dungeon. Crawl, though, addresses the problems of most roguelikes and awful RPGs- player skill makes a real difference in surviving, and grinding is nearly impossible.
How to play
To play Crawl online, you SSH to one of the two servers with a client like PuTTY. Playing online is 'official' and tracks scores and deaths and the like with leaderboards and personal statistics, and lets you watch other players as they play. Once you connect to the server, register an account there and hit 1 and then P to play Crawl 0.8. I've uploaded a pre-configured PuTTY for you, all you have to do is launch the exe and select your server. I included a font that makes the game look really sharp, so don't forget to install it!
http://filesmelt.com/dl/Crawl.rar - the password for the CAO server is joshua
The game starts you off on the first floor of the Dungeon- your goal is to get to the bottom and back up without getting mangled, starving, or killing yourself in a hilarious fashion. Crawl is controlled entirely with the keyboard, numpad for movement, and keys for things like using items or opening menus. If you press ? then ? again you can see all commands (there are a lot, but you'll catch on fairly quickly). Here's the important things: to attack monsters you walk into them, pressing i opens your inventory, pressing g picks up items, < and > to go up and down stairs.
How not to die horribly
When making a new character, your race determines your character's attributes and inherent abilities and advantages, while your class is simply a starting kit of items and skills to fit a certain playstyle. Most combos are playable, but many of them are far too tricky and rely on advanced game knowledge to do well. If you're having trouble try a few of these characters:
Mountain Dwarf Fighter - very resilient, lots of HP and armor, strategy comes down to killdudes with the best weapon you can find. Use magic items to escape fights you can't win!
Troll Berserker - Absolutely dominates the early game, but gets tricky further on. Press a and then ? to see your abilities
Deep Elf Fire Elementalist - Very fragile but you should be able to murderize everything with fire before they get to you. Press z and then ? to see your spells, and press M to memorize new ones
Spriggan Enchanter - Extremely fast, stealthy character that can run away from nearly any bad situation. Put enemies to sleep and place a knife in their face!
Demonspawn Necromancer - They get weird mutations as you level up, and can learn spells to make dead things kill everything for you
High Elf Crusader - Crusaders use a combination of enhancement spells and killdudes. Learn Berserk Rage to enable EASYMODE
Don't mash the keys! You gotta realize that every time you press a key the game advances, so mashing the butons does not make your guy fast. It's tempting though, I know. If there's enough interest in the thread I'll write a longer guide later for surviving early-game.
So is there any reason I should play this over Dungeons of Dreadmor?
So is there any reason I should play this over Dungeons of Dreadmor?
This is the real deal.
Dungeons of Dredmor is a decent roguelike for a beginner but if you're ready to get out of the swimming pool into the ocean Dungeon Crawl is for you.
It's the biggest, most well designed and most competitive (yearly tournaments) roguelike out there.
Edit: Also DoD is a very very easy game, if you want a challenge, Crawl provides.
I haven't looked into that but Crawl's been around and developed since the 90's and has a ridiculous amount of depth and strategy, and is designed for snappy, optimized play with the most shortcuts to cut out boring travel and weird item interactions and stuff like that. It definitely doesn't have as much character or as smooth of a learning curve Dungeons has but it's definitely awesome if you're looking for a tough, fair (relatively) roguelike.
also i dont get the title :[
also i dont get the title :[
Crawl 0.9 removed or "killed" Victory Dancing. (the longest "exploit" in the history of Crawl)
Hence the society of dead dancers. Too far fetched?
That was my favorite mechanic :[
That was my favorite mechanic :[
Have you seen the new skill window?
It let's you fine tune XP distribution almost as precise as you want or you can just switch it to "Auto" and let it raise your most used skills faster.
It's really really neat since now you can train Shields to 9 and Raise Fighting skill on Spellcasters, without actually using those skills (except for when you have to get them).
Also, I fought Mennas recently and he's nasty. The only counter to him are gimmicks (wield that bread!). I had tons of fun stair dancing to get him killed.
I haven't gotten past the 3rd level in DoD so I'll stay with that for the time being.

Quit being a bitch. :colbert:
Just kidding. DoD is cool but Crawl is awesome.
Honestly, if you're even remotely interested in Roguelikes there's absolutely no reason to not to play Crawl.

I like the new system so much better.
DECj is such a cakewalk and amazing powers of Ashenzari aren't making it more balanced.
Zero hunger frost cloud erryday!
This looks pretty cool, I was actually looking for a decent roguelike. I will get it as soon as my internet starts going fast again (in about 1hr). How does this compare to adventure mode in dwarf fortress? Are the controls similar?

Sort of but not really.
Dwarf Fortress Adventure is more similar to newer roguelikes, with roleplaying (sort of), quests, etc.
Dungeon Crawl is more old-school hack'n'slash focused on having the player to consistently make correct tactical and strategical decisions.
If you download the Tiles version, you'll be able to more or less do everything with the mouse until you learn all the hot keys.
I recommend doing the Tutorial Mode first.
Downloaded and installed. I played through the movement tutorial but now I have to study for a test i have tomorrow :(
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Facepunch has some good Crawl players.
You should try to update the scores list, I'm pretty sure flyschy and someone else broke into the millions
It's a bit of a pain in the ass to look for facepuncher accounts specifically.
I assumed (read: hoped) that I would be able to update it based on people boasting here.
So i've started playing and it's pretty damn awesome so far. I'm going with a vampire necromancer and it seems pretty badass. Is there anyway to get rid of a cursed club? Is it stuck on me forever?
I've just found a shrine of okawaru with some pretty sweet weapons around it. Will okawaru smite me or something if I take them :0
[editline]7th September 2011[/editline]
Nevermind got killed by a giant worm... at least im not cursed now :p
You can uncurse a weapon by using either Uncurse Scroll, that uncurses everything you wear or Enchant Weapon I/II/III Scroll which will uncurse and enchant your weapon.
No he won't, everything except for occasional want next to Xom altar is completely free for the taking.
Protip: If your weapon is cursed and you can't butcher with it, use animate skeleton on a dead body to receive it's chunks. Thats how worshipers of the great Ashenzari get their daily meal.

Clubs are useless except for throwing if you have nothing else.
Daggers, Short Swords, Whips, Hand Axes and Spears that aren't 'runed' or 'glowing' generally aren't worth weilding.
Better base weapons like Quarterstaves (Good for casters) , Sabres, Tridents, Other axes and other rarer things that you can find early if you're lucky can be worth wielding if you find one even if not 'runed' or 'glowing'.
It doesn't take long to find a few remove curse scrolls early on (although you have to I.D them which is kinda annoying) so once you've found those you can just wield I.D things without worrying but until then it's best to wait until you find some or read I.D a detect curse scroll before you start wield I.Ding weapons.
Note unlike branding enchantment (+x/+y) won't show up until you use the the weapon for a bit and if it was 'runed' or 'glowing' this will be positive unless it was cursed.
A +2 spear isn't better than a +0 trident though base type is always key.
The only thing left to watch out for is the distortion brand which is nasty (banishment on unwielding nasty) but rare so best not to worry about it really.

Thought when it comes to ego weapons, poison dagger is waaaaay better than simple enchanted sabre, for example.

It's more of a general rule than anything. If you really want to be sure try this.
Like in my current game I'm using a short sword of electrocution over a sabre.

Electrocution own everything since almost nothing has resistance against it (...Mennas...).

Press 5 to rest so you don't have to run around with low HP.
Oh god I feel like I should do a video with commentary but I don't want to get sucked back into the game during school
Having your only source of rElec coming with -Tele isn't a good idea.
awww shit, found a rod of smiting, a wand of disintegration, and a wand of confusion as a deep dwarf evoker
[editline]24th September 2011[/editline]
NOOOO fuck, I died, because I was starving and I could use my wands.
God damn is this game hard. Now I enjoy all manner of roguelikes and Dungeon Crawl is no exception, but I don't think I've ever gotten very far at all. :saddowns:
