Hello dear facepunch community, I hope I'm posting in the correct section.
My main goal in life is to become a game developer, and I will pursue after it until I will achieve it, now since I have a huge imagination, I thought about writing my own games, starting from now, which I will keep with me until one point when I will start developing them.
Now, my question is fellow fp'ers, WHAT exactly would I need to get in order to start writing a script for a game, set the characters before? Write the complete story and then think about gameplay features and whatnot? Any suggestions are well welcomed.
[SUB]ps: if this is wrong then don't blame me, this is like my second thread in FP.[/SUB]

There's usualy a difference between writing a game and the gameplay features and other things, writng a game, say the story, or characters background, who the character is, what they are than designing the other elements.
I see, so basically I just need to write the whole concept, characters, settings, and so on.
I have no idea, i'm not a games developer... but I know the guy who writes the stories and that lark usualy doesn't help much in the actually coding, developing of featueres, unless ofcourse they're multiskilled.
Well, first it would be nice to learn a programming language.
Java
C++
C#
Anything, really.
So this isn't about a game where you write?
There is a lot involved in making a game.
Programming - this is where you make the program which does all of the drawing to the screen, game logic, input, sound etc.
Art - you need to make 3D models, textures, images, sounds, animations etc...
To make a decent 3D game on your own is a tremendous task which requires years of experience to pull off. I started programming when I was 14 (now 22), which means I've been doing it for 8 years now. Even with this experience, I know that I couldn't produce something close to an industry developed game by myself, which is exactly why indie games are so basic (especially in amount of content and in their high usage of sandbox mechanics and procedural generation) by comparison.
There are very few people who lack the creativity to come up with game ideas, but there are very VERY few people who have the skills to make them real.
Do not try and avoid the development aspects of games, you cannot just be the ideas guy. Every programmer out there can make whatever the hell he wants. Why would he make your idea when he can make his own?
At the end of the day, if all you want to do is turn your ideas into games, consider thinking again. As an industry game developer, you are turning OTHERS ideas into games, and to get into the position where you are the ideas guy in industry takes years of working as a grunt.
The games industry is an extremely competitive, high stress, high hours environment. I started programming thinking "I want to be a games developer". I've realised that's closer to hell than heaven and I've settled for plain software development.
Yes this is the wrong section.
• Don't make "post your" threads. These are usually, but not limited to, threads asking for our opinion. This includes threads like: what is the best game of X genre, what we think is the best X in a game, post a list of X, in X game what's the best way to do X, etc.
"Post your" threads go into Fast Threads, not GGD.
