• Decrypting GCFs

Since the recent update for Half-Life 2 screwed some things, I want to get the original files for comparing. I decided to boot up the Half-Life 2 disk from 2004, only to find out the most important files are encrypted. I get Steam to decrypt the files, but it appears that only the base Source files are decrypted (sounds, materials, models), everything in Half-Life 2 content.gcf is still encrypted. If I try to update or verify, I end up with having all the maps but no DLLs. How can I decrypt everything in Half-Life 2 content without making it update?
Download GCFScape and it will decrypt them for you.

While it is possible to EXTRACT the files out of the HL2 GameCacheFiles (GCF) via GCF Scape, the models and materials will take up a lot of space on your hard drive if everything is extracted, sure a little stuff extracted, no big deal, but a lot is different, so I don't know what your going for here, are you comparing for in game purposes? Like Hammer editor? The differences are material related, the original HL2 is going to be more cubicle where you should not see that glare in the eyes, compared to the update. The only thing the update messed up for me was I got kicked out of server control for not having one of my dated HL2 map's not match the server's when in Gmod. Scenes and Sounds are possible to extract out of GCF's, because Ray Koefed on YouTube uses existing VO and alters scenes to make Gman sound like he is using bad language and suggest he is a pervert by manipulating such sounds from the GCF's.
I was using GCFScape, but I don't see a decrypt option though.
Drop and drop the files you want

You can't decrypt the GCF files if they're encrypted. GCFScape will not decrypt the files. Only Steam can unencrypt the GCF files, however it will not do it more than once. You're better off redownloading the files again. Valve encrypts preloaded GCFs so people cannot view the game content before it's released. As if people didn't know that.
GCF won't work while STEAM is running, thats when those files are locked up, when STEAM is not running, you should be able to extract, at least it did in the past on my operating system.

There should be an option somewhere in the menus to enable "Volatile access". Enable it and you can use GCFScape while Steam is running without any problem.
