OpenArena is a free and open source first-person shooter (FPS) computer game based heavily on the Quake III Arena style deathmatch. The OpenArena project was established on August 19, 2005, the day after the id Tech 3 GPL source code release. It is still in early development.
OpenArena's primary goal is to make a completely free, open source FPS game derived from Quake III. Its game engine is ioquake3, based upon id Software's GPL id Tech 3. In addition, a "missionpack" add-on is planned, to take advantage of the GPL'd Quake III: Team Arena source code.
The newest version of OpenArena 0.8.1 was released on October 31, 2008. The version 0.8.0 was removed because of the non-free content from the previous version.
OpenArena is available from the default repositories of a number of Linux distributions, including Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, and Ubuntu.
Pretty cool game, it brings back memories when Q3A came out :P
So, does anybody play this game? I've been messing around with it for the last 2 weeks and I was wondering if there are FP'ers who play this game...
It looks like a better version of that Quake Online. I should go check it out. I liked the original quake games where everything was chaos.
Yay another linux game based on a ten year old engine!
Quake Live is Quake III: arena, and this is a cheap copy. I like it, but Quake Live is a better alternative.
There's also Sauerbraten, and Nexuiz, and others.
GPL Quake 3 clones are spewing out of linux repositories and sourceforge, and none of them attract that much attention.
Doesn't look very fun.

I agree with you... Most of these kind of games (that is, free games for Linux OSes) don't really attract me much, but this one is pretty fun so I gave it a second chance :P
It's pretty good. For some reason, Quake Live never felt right to me (probably the Railgun nerf :v:), but this is pretty much straight, shameless Quake III.
Of course, Quake III is still better, because it's, you know, Quake III.
I prefer Nexuiz if I REALLY want to play a mediocre DM game. I could just fire up something from the Unreal pack I got on Steam for $13.
The main thing I remember about finding it a few years ago was that it came with a female character model that had two skins: a girl in a Borat bikini, and a furry.

suarbratan runs off of the cube engine
Sauerbraten is it's own engine, and a successor to the Cube engine.
But as a game, it's just a Quake 3 clone.
