• I hate Games for Windows Live.

I recently purchased GTA IV over Steam (great deal). Seems like I have to create a R* Social Club account if I want to play online, ok, so I create one. The game starts, I configure the various setting and start it. Then, when I make it to Roman's apartment the game tries to autosave but instead I get some pop-up that is telling me that I have to make a GFWL account if I want to save. I am already in fire and flames because of the fact that I have to put up to all this shit just to save. I create a offline profile because I can't be bothered to create anything else nor do I want to. I want to play multiplayer. I already created a R* account like they asked me to do, so it should be pretty straight forward. "You have to sign into Windows Live in order to play multiplayer." I want to take a dump in an envelope and send it to Microsoft, but I decide to create one of these "nifty" Live accounts. I already have a Live account which I use for MSN and hotmail, but when trying to set up a GFWL account I'm reminded that I already have one of those (GFWL and XBL uses exactly the same account.). One I created at a friends house years ago for a reason I don't remember, but I think it was a alt for him or something. Okay, then I should just change the username into kevlar jens instead of "Pie Master 2". Turns out that doesn't work unless I pay 600 xbox or whatever they call it. So now I have to play GTA IV with a retarded username because MS is forcing Windows/Xbox Live down my throat like I'm starring in a hardcore porn flick. TL;DR- I have to create a unnecessary amount of accounts in order to play GTA IV on the PC. And setting up a GFWL account is really a pain in the ass. I would gladly appreciate any help on this subject.
Pony up the MS points. Problem solved.
All I can say is "Who doesn't?"
They tried to make GFWL into a convenient auto-update/chat/savegame managing game unifier like Steam, but it just ends up being an annoying prick. I decided to try some multiplayer on GTA IV, click the big CONNECT TO LIVE button, says I have to apply this patch or I'll get logged out of Live. Click okay, download instantly fails with one of those cringeworthy unhelpful messages like "couldn't download the update, make sure you're connected to the internet". Steam does more than GFWL and does every single aspect better. That annoying shit really is a failure on Microsoft's part. When I made the online Live account, my game got completely reset because my saves are on the offline account I'd been using for ages. Yeah I could login to different accounts depending on what I wanted to do, but it's still a pain to do it, and Steam doesn't give you this problem.
If they had an option to make your offline account into an online account you would be fine but because Microsoft dosent think about their customers they didnt do that.
I hate it, it's clunky, and they programmed it so badly that the client patching feature works less than 20% of the time, meaning it's easier to fucking reinstall GFWL.

You didn't make a Live account to play MP in the first place and then complain that you have to make a Live account. B. You made some old account and can't change the name. I have had no problems with GFWL, in fact, I enjoy using it very much, even more so than Steam's in-game overlay. It's very smooth and the menus are where they should be. I had no trouble at all setting up a Live account, took 2 seconds and I was instantly playing. TL;DR - OP is dumbfounded and doesn't understand how to use an interface so he blames it on Microsoft.
I actually haven't had many problems with it, and I have Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3 and GTA 4, all of which use my Live account. You'd think with the 3 of them that's 3 times more chances for it to mess up.
Oh my god. Two other people who aren't on the WE HATE GFWL BECAUSE IT'S A SHITTY PORT OF XBOX LIVE HURF DURF bandwagon. This is amazing.
I actually like it because it allows me to talk to my xbox friends.
I actually like it because it allows me to talk to my xbox friends.
Before I got my xbox at xmas, this was very handy. Its funny because as a silver member on xbox.com you cannot send messages, but on any GFWL game you can use voice chat and text for FREE :) But now I got my xbox and gold membership, it doesnt really matter.
GFWL is what made GTA4 on the PC shitty.
Only good for gamerscore/achievements and shit
Games for Windows Live is disgustingly bad, the only redeeming feature of which being that I can talk to friends on their consoles with it, that is it. It entirely fails as a community system, without a proper system of IM, using a stupid almost email-ish like system, it entirely fails as a matchmaking system, with Red Faction Guerrilla being an absolute pain the arse to play online with friends because of its inability to find games, and it totally fails as a system generally. Get this, you should never need to sign in to any online system to play a singleplayer game. How does Steam get round this? It has a system of synchronization with saved games on a local level. So if steam for whatever reason goes down while you are playing, you can still access your saves. It's an absolute failed system, and it should stop being in games until they actually make it workable. Add on to that, that Rockstar Social Club is the most worthless application I've ever had the misfortune to run in the background, doing a total of host a fucking PLAY button.
The thing that pisses me off is that you can't get into a voice chat/party as a PC user.
Oh my god. Two other people who aren't on the WE HATE GFWL BECAUSE IT'S A SHITTY PORT OF XBOX LIVE HURF DURF bandwagon. This is amazing.
Shame the bandwagon is true. It is a port of XBL, they've changed some shit, but it's still an attempt to apply what XBL did to console gaming to PC Gaming. And it is failing, badly.
As much as I hate stacking external shit up inside the game such as DRM software/Games for Windows/Punkbuster and all that... I can't really complain about GFWL. Sure, Steam is better for the stuff that GFWL attempts but as long as you have a 360 account and you know the login, it isn't that bad. However, I do hate the whole DLC deal, I'd rather buy my GTAIV/Fallout 3 expansions through Steam...
it was fine for me, when i installed street fighter 4 it asked for me to log in, and i just used my MSN account, so i didnt have to make an account. so i dont see why everyone dislikes it. it even installed the update for me without me having to restart my game.
Microsofts Live accounts are the same throughout the whole system. You can use the same account for Zune/Live/GFWL/MSN anything.
At least you're having fun playing, right, Pie Master 2?
big whooping doo just do as you have been ask en theres no problem what so ever
I played 3/4 of Fallout 3 without a live account, then i finally made an account, and i have to sign out of Windows Live for it to detect my save file, otherwise i have to start again.
Just transfer the save files from wherever it saves now to the GFWL fallout save folder. Wherever that may be. Worked for me.
If I had an xbox and I could link the accounts I wouldn't hate it so much, but I don't, so its horrible.
God yes I hate this piece of shit. I spent 30minutes trying to play Dawn of War 2 and failing. It tells me I need a GFWL account, ok... I don't want to but apparently I've got no choice if I want to play this game so I try to register. I've already got an account, sick I'll just log onto that. No dice son, that's not a proper account you need to register. Um k, well I'll just register... "You've already got an account tied to this email, just log in!" Well I just tried that but I'll give it another shot... In the end I just created a hotmail address so I could register a fucking account.
Pony up the MS points. Problem solved.
Yeah, like I am going to let MS rob me for x amount of dollars.
Most of these problems are your own fault. Basically you're blaming the service because A. I thought that having a R* Social Club account would grant me access to the multiplayer portion, and when GFWL popped-up I thought Live was just something for stat-tracking and achievements, and therefor I decided to create a offline account. Also, I would still suffer from the same problems even if I decided to create a Live account from square one, because B. They would still remind me off my old xbox account I made for a friend several years ago. I can't change the username for said account unless I pay fucking 600 microsoft points which is fucking bs (!) I am playing games on a PC, not a xbox 360. And I certainly didn't expect to register/sign-in to two other services when I already have one that works perfectly fine, Steam.
Never had any problem besides updating.
GFWL is what made GTA4 on the PC shitty.
Yeah? Well you're an idiot and so are the 4 people that rated you agree. The only thing that made GTA IV shitty was how terribly unoptimized it is, and the lack of patches to fix it from Rockstar. It sure would be helpful for you to put that in the OP instead of trying to correct me based on my limited knowledge of your problem. B. So make a new account? I don't understand how that's so hard. And if you need a new email just go make a free one with Gmail.
Welcome to the club, you're member #... sorry sir, we lost count. It's better to prevent scamming but it's greedy, like bill gates haven't got enough money yet.
I hate GFWL because they took my money when I tried to buy one of the DLC's for Fallout 3, and were like "LOLOL YOU DON'T GOT RETAIL VERSION, NO DLC SUCKA!!" Damn Bethesda not having the DLC's for the Steam version. :P
