During the recent Steam sale, I wanted to buy a few games that were only a few pounds. However, some are only for older OS like 98 and XP (the latter is still pretty good).
I have Vista, and although I found a few patches in the Steam forums that made a couple of the games work (some useful installers that replace a couple of files in Manhunt and Midnight Club 2), there are still plent that aren't as lucky.
One example is Cold Fear, which is 2000/XP only and hasn't got a patch to work on Vista as far as I can see.
Why can't the fixes I found on the forums be used to update the games by their developers and distributors, as well as similar programs being made to update other games? Surely they'll sell more (I didn't buy CF, but still want to) and will have a longer life.
