I bought Far Cry in the Steam sale, installed it and loaded it up, and I can't see the Steam overlay when I press the assigned key. It's rather annoying because the CD key pop-up is in the way of my health and ammo, and I can't dismiss it.
Would appreciate any help with this.
OS?

What do you look like?

A damn sight better than you
I have plenty of games added to Steam that don't work with the overlay, but I find it odd that a game you bought on Steam doesn't have it working.

I can't open the overlay in STALKER, Morrowind or Oblivion either.
I'm not bothered about those because there isn't a pop-up blocking my health and ammo.
Sounds like a problem on your machine because I can use Steam in-game in all of those.
drivers? Background programs?
My drivers are up to date, and if it were background programs wouldn't it effect all my Steam games?
Try deleting clientregistry.blob in the steam folder and try again, often works for things like this.
I'll try that and see how it goes.
I know that there's some games that doesn't support it yet/bugged, but you should be able to do it in STALKER (I know that for a fact).
If it doesn't work when you delete Clientregristry, then try and reinstall Steam. You'll have to download your games again, so if you have a lot of games then it might better to message Valve and ask them.

I've had this problem for a long time. Re-installing Steam, and even formating, hasn't done anything.

I tried deleting clientregistry.blob and it hasn't worked.
Is it disabled in options?
Try changing the double key press to open the overlay in the Steam settings.
Google revealed to me there's an issue with some users of ATI 5000 series cards, you don't happen to have one do you OP?

Already have.
Have you checked the steam forums?
Also, try window mode if it's available.
I looked in the Far Cry section of the Steam forums. A guy said he had fixed it, and I've replied asking how, but I haven't had a reply yet.
Try window mode, realy. I havent played FC for ages but im sure there is a -w mode.
I tried window mode and it didn't work.
Then, is there any option to disable overlay in steam?
There is, and I'll just have to play without an overlay unless I can find a way to get it working.
At least I'll be able to see my health and ammo though.
