That's right. You heard it. Mortal Kombat 9, renamed to the old name "Mortal Kombat" is under development as we speak. The new Mortal Kombat, unlike the last game, which got a T rating, is going to be the goriest and grittiest one yet.
Ed Boon stated in one of his Twitters that he was doing motion capture for the fatalities. He also stated that he wanted this one to be an M rating, but was scared of the game going over the line to AO rating.
Ed Boon also stated that he wanted to remove the majority of the characters and only leave some of the old ones in. He wanted to "re-boot" the series. This is probably one of the reasons Mortal Kombat got its old name back. But don't worry, most of your favorite characters, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Shang Tsung will still be in the new game.
The new game is supposed to bring back the 2D fighting experience and a number of new gamemodes. Of course, you can still do one on one. But how about 2 on 2? That is right. The game features a new gamemode called "Tag-Team" where you can call a team of 2 fighters together and fight as a team. Scorpion [B]and[/B] Sub-Zero? Great team if you ask me. There is also Deep storyline mode. No info on this has been released yet, but as you can tell, it probably has to do with the storyline for each individual character.

Mortal Kombat is planned to be released sometime in the year 2011. They might also release some new info on the new "Gory" fatalities at E3.
Mortal Kombat has been my favorite game franchise since I was 5. I still play it today, and am anticipating the 2011 release.

Yes dude, read the OP. Also, there is still a year left. So my guess is is that they still have a lot to work on. This is in heavy Beta.

The character roster looked kinda small, but god damn, I'm going to play this game to hell.
Someone needs to make a .gif of that awesome Scorpion fatality.
I hope it will be released on PC, I do not own any of the three current generation consoles, and I won't buy any of them if it's a console-exclusive title. I've had a lot of fun with SF4 and the MadCatz controller on PC, there's no way back now.
Going to buy this when it comes out. Looks like the best Mortal Kombat to come out.
