Allow me to begin this post by saying we believe in the freedom of speech, the right to share information and be creative. We have enjoyed watching mod developers push the boundaries for years and create amazing content, and shall always do this.
However, recently a mod on the site called School Shooter: North American Tour 2012 has been getting quite a bit of mainstream press due to the controversial nature of the content. It seems that people sit on two sides of the fence on this one. There are those that believe the makers of this mod should have the right to make whatever they want, while there are others that believe it is disgusting and crosses the line.
We sit on both sides, on one hand we find the content to be deliberately offensive and in poor taste, but on the other we also feel people should have the right to be creative and share what they want on a community / developer run site, and we shouldn't have the right to dictate what is/isn't allowed.
The challenge faced is we are currently receiving quite a bit of threatening mail as people believe we are the creators, supporters and makers of this content. I want to stress that this absolutely isn't the case. We have never encouraged or made any content, we disagree with the mod but at the same time believe in freedom of speech and the unique ability modders and indie developers should have to create games (good-or-bad) about topics, issues and events considered risky or taboo.
There is also quite a bit of confusion from non-gaming press, who state that games like this are the reason why all bad things occur, spreading misinformation and fear. As a result of this confusion and hate, at the moment we feel the best course of action is to remove the mod. We don't want the hard work of thousands of other mod developers to be threatened by people misunderstanding this one mod/game, and assuming all others are like it.
I understand why it was taken down, but it's only a mod. It's not like they encourage you to kill innocent children.
Personally, I didn't find it offensive, but I think the creators really pushed the boundaries.

Censorship is bad.

Funny how they are trying to sound smart, but yet they say "There are people who think that every one should do whatever they want, and there are people who don't let others do harmless things because they are "yucky" (based purely of their subjective view). And we are both of that :downs:"
I don't like Mass Effect just because I simply don't like it. I will now write an article about how it should be banned to every one because "it's not a fun game".

Read the comments, as this is not what they're getting at. They believe with the mainstream media coverage of the mod, it is damaging both ModDB and the image of what modding is in general.

I was talking about the media that created this mess, not about the guys who were incently claimed as a site that distributes very bad and angry and sinful free killing simulators for kids to learn by Fox news. I would do the same if I was in administration for ModDb until it was sorted out.
Self preservation comes first. The Moddb staff had every right to remove the mod. Sad though that people get offended by such pointless things.
wow i never saw this coming
I wanted to play it actually.
I blame Jack Thompson
If you want to play this mod just go into Garry's Mod and spawn a bunch of NPC's, kill them and your practically getting what you wanted. This really wasn't anything more then attention whoring in my opinion. "Hey look your in a school and your shooting people, isn't that just SHOCKING, we are so edgy, play our mod"

Well I'm pretty sure you could accomplish that in Gmod, but the point of the mod is "about shooting people in a school". It's going/was going to have multiple game modes, maps and shit, you'd get time bonuses for multiple kills, you know...you wouldn't have to build it, it was there for you to do it.
(I know I got that explanation really fucked up, excuse me.)
This mod has gotten way more attention than it deserves
To be honest, I understand it was a joke, but let's be serious. Realistically, it's a joke about people that actually died thanks to self-righteous nutjobs, and I'm sorry but that's not cool. I mean I wouldn't even make a minor joke about something like Virginia Tech in real life, let alone make a game which mocks everything. I like how it was to demonstrate freedom of speech and whatnot but let's be real here. It was a "joke" mod about shooting up a school apparently inspired by real school shootings. I'm sorry but come on.
It's funny because the only way it was a "school shooter" is because they called it "School Shooter".
I don't see any dead kids, and the maps barely resemble a school.
They should keep developing it, and release it somewhere other than Moddb.
Lol @ the dumbasses in comments approving of this.

You could say any game that has war in it is about people that actually died because people have died in war, but it's a tenuous connection. This mod doesn't feature the actual schools or people, just generic ones

I thought it did? Weren't parents from schools portrayed in the mod complaining to Moddb?
Look on the bright side, now we all have time to play Bully: Source.

"I was hoping to release my anger about school by playing School Shooter, but since it was canceled I had no other way to calm myself down."

And look even better, if we can rummage through some boxes we can play some Canis Canem Edit!

Oh, if only....
ModDB has always been a terrible community, so no big surprise here. This isn't their first time.<
Edit: You people are fucking retarded for thinking ModDB is actually a nice place. It's full of stolen content, and admins never bother to remove them. Is that what you get for telling the truth, well then, fuck you.
Well, it was barely updated anyway. I think the last update was more than 2 months ago. Hopefully they can focus on Half mind 2.

I like the bully made by Rockstar better than that shit
Didn't one of the team members say on an interview that the reason they are making School Shooter is to "show everyone that it's just a game, nothing else"?
I love how despite the fact that they say that they support free speech, they removed it because it might be connected to ModDB. I think this is hilarious because now a huge amount off people are getting mad at them, which basically destroys the point of removing it, since now everyone is getting angry specifically at ModDB for giving in to those morons who hate to see the growth of something they don't understand.
Im cool with this mod being removed because:
A: it looked like shit, just as bad as the other two spam mods by that dev team.
B: I dont think such a shit looking game should be allowed to throw the whole modding community into disreprute, just for the "gimmick" of running around slaughtering people.
It may have been worth it if the game looked like there was actual effort being put into it but considering the track record of that team, and the appearence of the mod... yeah its not worth having on the site. What im saying is I dont mind the subject of school shootings being touched in a game BUT if your going to do it, do it right.
