In light of all the recent Mortal Kombat news, I thought people might like a place to discuss the game series. Mortal Kombat 1 The original Mortal Kombat was originally made for arcades in 1992. It was very popular in arcades and was eventually ported to game consoles and became a best-selling game. The violence naturally caused controversy. Mortal Kombat II After the success of the first game, Midway naturally made a second. It was also originally made for arcades, but was eventually ported to the Super NES, Game Boy, Saturn, 32X, Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, Master System, PlayStation, PlayStation 3, PC and Amiga. This addition to the series added much to gameplay. Mortal Kombat 3 Mortal Kombat 3, was similar to the previous two. It simply added to the gameplay, for example, adding the ability to run as well as interactive levels. Mortal Kombat 4 Mortal Kombat 4 introduced weapons to the series, that were found in the level. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Deadly Alliance was a total reboot of the series. Deadly Allianced introduced Konquest mode, which at the time was series of levels in which the player completed progressively difficult combos. This also introduced "The Krypt" were the player could spend their acquired currency on coffins filled with goodies, the coffins could contain anything from characters to concept art. Mortal Kombat: Deception Deception at the core was very similar to Deadly Alliance, but with a ton of good features piled on. Some features include unique weapons which can be picked up during fights. Another feature is puzzle kombat, which is a small multiplayer puzzle game with a Mortal Kombat twist. Chess Kombat is another fun minigame although the name is a bit deceiving, since it requires little strategy. In Chess Kombat you assign any character to a chess peice and use them to fight, it's something to play against a friend. The most welcomed feature in Deception is the improved Konquest mode. In Konquest mode you play as Shujinko in his lifelong quest to gather the six powerful items called kamidogu from the six realms. Shaolin monks Shaolin Monks is very unlike all the other Mortal Kombat games. Shaolin Monks plays like more of an arena style game. In Shaolin Monks you play as either Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Scorpion or Sub-Zero (or any combination of two in co-op mode) as they travel through the realms in an attempt to thwart Shang Tsung's plans to dominate Earthrealm. Armageddon Armageddon's gameplay style is back to the original. Armegeddon includes "Motor Kombat" which is a kart racing game featuring some characters from Mortal Kombat. Armageddon also boasts having every single character from Mortal Kombat playable, but because of the limitations of the systems it was released on, it only had 1 fighting style and 1 weapon per character and no unique fatalities. Another feature added in Armageddon is the "Kreate a Fighter mode" In which the player can create and customize their own character that can be used in arcade or in a fight against a friend, who can also be using their own fighter. Konquest mode in Armegeddon plays less like Deception and more like Shaolin monks. Konquest mode follows Taven as he learns of his destiny to defeat Blaze. Armageddon is frequently bashed by fans for being one of the worst of the series. Armageddon does not add much new to the series, and ruined fatalities, but in my opinion it's still very entertaining and worth the $5 you can probably get it for. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe MK Vs. DC can hardly be called a Mortal Kombat game, the story is completely non-canonical and it does not include massive amounts of blood and gore. MK vs. DC brings almost nothing new to the table, other than "Close Kombat" and "free-fall kombat" which is a desperate button mashing frenzy, which just gets frustrating and annoying. The Rage system is the only other gameplay feature I can think of, it basically allows one player to become temporarily invicible, although they can still take damage that's the best I can describe it. Rage mode does give newer players a bit of an edge against more seasoned players, but in the end it's just frustrating for one person. The story mode is very short, and after that there's not much to do. But like any other Mortal Kombat game, it's still fun to play against a friend. In the end, it's a bit disappointingly average, but it's still enjoyable. Mortal Kombat 9 As of now, not much is known about Mortal Kombat 9 at the moment. All that we know is that blood and gore WILL be back, in fact it could be the goriest game yet. It was also revealed that there will be a tag team mode allowing you to switch between multiple characters mid-game. Mortal Kombat 9 will be on a 2D field, much like the early games in the series. Now you may be saying to yourself, "Scorpion8754, I'm not a Mortal Kombat fan but I want to try them out, were do I start? Since you're a character right out of the game you ought to know." Well, I personally recommend that you get Mortal Kombat: Deception. In my opinion Deception is the best in the series, and if you don't like Deception you probably won't like any of the other ones.
This thread was a nice read, lots of information on stuff I knew little about.
So real, it hurts
This was much more than I expected. Good thread. I never "got" the MK games, but the "So real it hurts!" poster was hilarious in the day and still is now.
There was some plot line where a bunch of people were supposed to die and never come back. What happened with that?
There was some plot line where a bunch of people were supposed to die and never come back. It was fun for a little while, but once it started to get boring, I could never enjoy it like I used to. I really, really preferred Deception
Deception was the best in the series, hands down.
Sub-Zero is a badass.
Armageddon could have been the perfect MK game if not for a tiny few fuckups. What they needed was: -More stages (if you're going to have every character, why not every stage?) -Unique fatalities (ideally two for every character, plus animalities, babalities, and friendships). The create-a-fatality system was pretty weak. I wouldn't care if they scrapped it altogether. -Better endings. A lot of the ones currently in the game are really fucking stupid, and they didn't even have the cool artwork that usually accompanies them. I think the artwork alone would have saved them. -3 fighting styles per character. This one is less of a big deal to me, but would have helped. Honestly what really got me was the lack of fatalities. That's gotta be at least half the reason people play MK games. And as for the Mortal Kombat movies... Just take the opening cinematic of Armageddon and stretch it out to 1-2 hours. It would be many times better than the existing movies. Just look at that shit. But admittedly, that is a pretty half-assed story. It basically says "OH SHIT! MORTAL KOMBAT HAS TOO MANY CHARACTERS! BITCHES GON' DIE!"

Oh god, I almost forgot how you unlocked characters in Deception, which is strange since I was just playing through it this weekend. There's no way you could possibly find all the characters without looking online where and when to get them.
Sub-Zero is a badass.
This right here. Favorite character.
Shaolin monks is the worst one to me. Barely feels like a mortal kombat game.
My favorite MK games were Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 , Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat Deception, but in the end I think I liked them all except for the Vs. DC Universe one simply because I've never played it, so I don't know if it's good. The next MK game however looks amazing. As a side note, I never understood why they did not include Scorpion in the original Mortal Kombat 3 release, I was shocked at the arcades when I saw that for the first time (Scorpion is my favorite character of the whole franchise), we Scorpy fans had to wait until they finally released the "Ultimate" version to fix that problem (amongst other things).
The game wasn't too good. But the Special Edition cover was rad
The problem with MK vs. DC can be perfectly summarized with one word... Er, actually, one letter. T
T?
It was rated T because DC didn't want their characters ripping eachother apart I guess, so they took out the excessive blood and gore that sets MK apart
and that's why it sucked MKvsDC
Scorpion is a badass.
Fixed
Mortal Kombat 4 has y nostalgia vote.. Scorpion is hardcore. Lui Kang in 4 was hardcore. Deadly Alliance is the only MK game I own currently :frown:
Many hours spent with friends playing MK4 I think
I just saw the new movie trailer.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is33FDaqID0&fmt=22[/hd] New MK game announced!
http://wildgunmen.com/blog/2010/06/15/e3-first-look-mortal-kombat/ Sorry if it's late but i thought it had some nice info on Mk 9
Fuck yes! Gore! [editline]07:52AM[/editline] Neat.
You forgot Sub Zero Mythologies, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which is BY FAR the best MK game, it combines 1, 2, and 3, has every character, all the awesome shit from 3, and its amazing.
Trilogy is the best. So many characters.
I loved the baby fatalities. Which game were those in?
Ah yes, I only ever had MK3 for SNES. Good game, shame I suck at these sorts of games.
