FPS drop when looking at certain sprites in the EP2 engine

I get a serious drop in fps when looking at certain sprite effects, such as black smoke (the [sp]rocket launch[/sp] in Episode 2, for example) and dust effects. I'm not sure what's causing this, I don't have this problem in the old Half-Life 2 engine.

Any ideas?

Crap PC? What's your specs. This is usually caused by either a shit graphics card or outdated drivers, it's because of the transparency.

mat_dxlevel 90 - DX9 with Shader Model 2
 mat_dxlevel 95 - DX9 with Shader Model 3
 mat_dxlevel 98 - DX9 on DX10 hardware (SM 4)

L4D2 60fps 24/7 on high.
Dosent make sense.

And i can run gta iv on max settings.

Episode 2 runs better than HL2.
