REALLY URGENT BULLITEN Due to technical difficulties with the FTP, we must switch back to Dropbox. Sorry for the inconvenience. The new region is up there, though. Disregard anything about FTPBox until we can resolve the issue. [del]If you want to be invited, please PM Boavanet to get your account credentials sorted out[/del] Until the issues with the FTP are sorted out, PM me for invites to Dropbox with your email. YOU REQUIRE THIS TO GET IN THE COLLAB:
SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition or SimCity 4 plus Rush Hour expansion pack Program that can make symbolic links (Need this in order to link the Dropbox folder to your individual region folders) FTPBox (We will most likely need this eventually, so mind as well get it now)
[del]You also need to PM Boavanet for the FTPBox account credentials and so forth.[/del] Until the issues with the FTP are sorted out, PM me for invites to Dropbox with your email. HOW TO GET THE COLLAB TO WORK: (shamelessly half stolen from the last OP and half stolen from a tutorial video, all thanks to Binladen34 and Boavanet)
Step 1) Right Click on "National Facepunchia Region" in the folder marked "Facepunch SimCity 4 Collab" in the FTPBox folder. Step 2) Click on "Pick Link Source" Step 3) Navigate to your Sim City Regions folder in My Documents and right click it. (If that doesn't work right click inside it) Step 5) Go to the menu marked Drop As, then inside that menu, click Symbolic Link. Step 6) Wait for a shortcut to be placed, if shortcut has anything besides "National Facepunchia Region" in the name, shorten it until it is just "National Facepunchia Region". Step 7) Copy or delete your plugins folder from your SimCity 4 folder (depending on whether or not you want to keep your personal mods), then repeat the last few steps with the plugin folder in the Dropbox (be sure to drop the link in the SimCity 4 folder, not the region one!). Step 8) Launch up Sim City 4, load the region, and don't enter other people's cities without permission. Limit to one person per city per time OR THERE WILL BE CORRUPTION!.
[del]For those of whom don't understand how to set up FTPBox and/or have too small of an attention span to read the above instructions, have an instructional video courtesy of Boavanet:[/del] RULES:
1. Do not edit anyone else's city without their explicit permission! You may feel free to look at other peoples' cities, however, but do not save. 2. Be mindful of when you edit your city and post anytime you plan on editing your city. Everytime you save, the cities immediately North, South, East, and West of you will also save. Remember, this game was not meant to be multiplayer, so this would normally not be a problem. We might make a better system to prevent corruption later, but for now post when you edit in the thread so anyone who makes a city around you won't save and corrupt your game or vice versa. 3. Don't make any sweeping terraforming changes without notifying me first (unless the tile you're on is completely oceanic or flat). By what I mean by "sweeping" is completely flattening a mountain or something like that. That said, I don't really care if you make a lake on the mainland or an island in the ocean, but just don't go completely insane with it. 4. This isn't really a rule, but be sure to keep a backup copy of all your cities on-hand on your computer somewhere just in case anything bad happens. I cannot stress this enough. I'll try to keep some backups on my own person, too, just in case. 5. No mods other than the ones in the Dropbox. If you want a mod added, tell me what it is before you do it. 6. Vanilla SimCity 4 cheats are ok, unless there's one that affects demand. NO EXTRA CHEATS MODS, however. 7. Do not change the region configuration without notifying me first.
If you believe something needs to be added here, don't hesitate to ask! FAQ:
Q: My city keeps turning into a flat plain/ocean. A: That's not actually a question. Regardless, if it turned to plain, basically SC4's way of saying your city got corrupted, so there's really nothing you can do unless you have a locally-backed up copy of the city on-hand. In that case, you can just plop that one in and overwrite the old one, and (in theory) it should help you recover. Flat ocean can also connote this, but there are other possibilities. See below. Q: I just did that and some asshole took my spot! What do I do? A: First off, shoot me off a PM and some evidence that the guy took your spot (a screenshot of your city from region view should do, which might not be necessary since I'll be taking screenshots every time I remember). Wait for my response. If I say yes, you can go ahead and bulldoze his city off the map and throw your backup there. If the guy comes back, I'll ban him and he can appeal in the thread. Q: Is there a city limit per person? A: At this point, no, but it may be necessary if we start running out of space in the region or if we near a data limit (probably not going to happen, but who knows?). Q: According to Dropbox, people keep deleting my city! Are they griefing me? A: Not necessarily. It would seem that, for some reason, that sometimes peoples' maps are incompatible with each other and some cities are replaced with older or corrupted versions. Now, I'm not 100% certain, but if you have a backup, you might be able to do something about it. First, notify me that you're doing it just in case something is going wrong. Secondly, delete whatever city tile is in place of the city you're building (you can do this straight from SC4 and get the same effect, I believe). Then, load another map, alt-tab, and put your backup back in the region folder. Reload the map, and theoretically it should come back. However, this is not a completely tested solution as of yet, and I'm not 100% sure if it always works, so don't go around deleting tiles because of it. Q: Sometimes random tiles turn to flat ocean. Is that a conflict? A: Once again, not necessarily. I've noticed that the map sometimes glitches out and places city tiles in wrong places, "deletes" others, etc. However, this is temporary and should dissipate if you load one map and load our map again. I'm not 100% sure on this, either, however... Q: I have a friend(s) that's not from FP that wants to join. Can he? A: Of course, but please verify it with me first. Q: Why are there so many 80s song referenced-lots all over the region? Can I put my city there? A: Haha, that's because I had to import those cities from another region and I had to use easily-recognizable names so I could drag and drop them into the new region. That said, yes, you can obliterate all my cities!
More questions and responses coming up soon! Fhex's Guide to Making a Semisuccessful City: Some guys can't seem to make a city without falling deep into the red, so I'll try my best to help out.
1. Start with the bare essentials: Residential zones, commercial or industrial zones, some type of road connecting them all together (which one is really not that big of a deal right now, since the maintenence costs for roads are neligibly low when you first start out), a power source, and a water source (Recommended, but not required; you'll see why later). Be sure all the zones are high-density! 2. Go to the power source and the water source and lower the little bar on the top that controls the funding the building recieves. This is crucial. Basically, by downing this, you better suit the building to your city's needs, rather than having a gigantic power plant or water pump that makes waste. Keep it on the lower thresholds for now and increase it as the city requires power. 3. Press the play button. You'll notice that sims will start building their shit all over without any sort of school, police station, fire station, etc. 4. As the population plateaus, build schools, police stations, fire stations, etc, one by one. Be sure to increase or decrease the funding thresholds as necessary to fit to your city.
Congratulations! You've made a city that probably is making a profit! If you want to know how long you can usually do this for, one of my last cities actually got up to a population of 40,000 without building anything other than the "bare essentials." If you see something that needs to be in the OP, tell me! OP is always a WIP. Also don't let insane cultists congregate at the border void at your town

They could be planning something... Also steam group I keep forgetting to link. TL;DR: Go up to rules, requirements, and the "how to get the collab to work" sections. Read those at least.
Last time this happened with dropbox the whole thing got shut down due to the huge amount of data being used. It will fail again. Use another program.
Last time this happened with dropbox the whole thing got shut down due to the huge amount of data being used. It will fail again. Use another program.
I read the thread, and I don't see any problems with hitting a data limit, or any data problems for that matter. The only thing I see that comes close to that is the project lead hitting a data cap set by his ISP and getting his internet shut down. Since he couldn't moderate it being the only person who had access, the whole thing turned to a free-for-all and people left because they got frustrated, not to mention all the corruption problems and the lack of structure. The whole thing was a mess, but the collab itself only hit maybe 1GB of total memory used. Besides, there aren't a lot of other free alternatives to Dropbox that we can use. If you can name one, then tell me and I'll look into it. I want nothing more than for this to succeed.
I remember last time, a bunch of people started cheating and made the whole region suffer because of it. I hope this time that doesn't happen.
Ah yes, time to reinstall

Wuala might work but I am not sure and I dont know if there is a limit on that (have not hit one in the past but they are owned by LaCie now). As long as their file system thing is installed it should work and the 2 gigs free should work just fine. also shameless referral link: http://www.wuala.com/referral/AHGFHK33PGBN65AJ7N4A Also the promo code TRADED might still work not sure.
Sweet, now to find my disk... Edit: Well that took a grand total of 47 seconds

Currently Wuala does not follow symbolic links.
Bottom of their FAQ Symbolic links help allow data to stream directly from Dropbox to the region folder, so unfortunately it doesn't seem that we could use Wuala unless they make it so you can use them.
It has worked before: http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/topic/32011-multiplayer-regions-with-filesharing-and-symlinks/ [editline]3rd March 2012[/editline] In the end as long as you have it install its special driver to set up a network drive, there wont be much of a problem with making the whole thing work. You cant do it in the program but you can do it through that network drive as long as you get it set up in the program first.

Thankfully that won't affect anything in the short term, so we can keep the Dropbox up for the time being. I really hope it does work though. Thankfully, I can move the project over fairly easily if it turns out we can continue it on Wuala, so that's no problem on my end. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I really do appreciate it. I'll be accepting invites for the next hour, but then I'll be gone for a few hours.
I'll want in on this :D
I'll want in on this :D
Then PM me the email you registered Dropbox with and I'll send you an invite. I think you can also PM anyone else in the collab already and they can get you an invite, too, but I'm not sure. Also, is this page loading really slowly and kind of chugging for anyone else?
im all set up and dowloading the dropbox files, (fuck australian internet)
I just founded my city. North Ogden.
Okay, all mods installed, symbolic link a go, lets begin the legacy of the glorious nations of Facepunchia Edit: My town will be known as Airstrip One

Oh well.
I started the city of Twin Rivers; currently doing well Going to continue playing tomorrow How the map look when I left: I wonder how much will have changed when I come back.
I think we should get a steam group up.
I think we should get a steam group up.
We have one, I think, assuming it didn't go defunc. Yep: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SC4FPCollab [editline]4th March 2012[/editline] Also Jord, I'm getting a bit of a conflict with your city. Could you show me exactly where you put it so I can figure out if I can solve why it's conflicting?

Phase 1 of the Harrisburg Mega-project is underway Basically any of the lots within the blue circle will eventually feed into the traffic nightmare that will be Downtown Harrisburg
Well my city was there. Now its just a huge ocean :(
Oh god why am I so shit at this game. Also no Airstrip one, just the Fascist Township of the Sixty Third Reich
Well my city was there. Now its just a huge ocean :(
Uh, which cell exactly was it on? I might be able to help real quick before I sign off. Also, if anyone has any last minute invite requests, now is the best time.
Guys, this time, please don't use any cheats. It seriously fucks everything up for everyone.
Guys, this time, please don't use any cheats. It seriously fucks everything up for everyone.
Ah, that's the rule I forgot to put in. Thanks for reminding me.
The bankrupt slum of Flaegton is now there.
