Freelancer is a space trading and combat simulation video game developed by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft Game Studios. In the game, players take on the roles of spacecraft pilots. These characters fly single-seater ships, exploring the planets and space stations of 48 known star systems. They also engage in dogfights with other pilots (player- and computer-controlled) to protect traders or engage in piracy themselves. Other player activities include bounty-hunting and commodity trading. The single-player mode puts the player in the role of Edison Trent, who goes through a series of missions to save the Sirius sector from a mysterious alien force. In multiplayer mode, players are free to take on any role and to explore anywhere from the start.
So pretty much, it's like EVE, except 500% better. It's also more simple and less complex, so that's a plus if EVE is a bit too complex for you. Not to mention, the Multiplayer is free. In my opinion, it's one of the best games out there, along with some great mods by the community (88 Flak for example). Demo There is a demo here: http://www.microsoft.com/games/freelancer/downloads_05.aspx Media [img_thumb]http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2003/news/02/20/fr_screen002.jpg[/img_thumb] A space battle between fighters. You can download it here: http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/downloads/freelancer-global-server-workaround It's self explanatory. Servers There are plenty of servers to be found, though none of them really do it for me except for one. A server ran by members of the /v/ community on 4chan, even though I know Facepunch hates 4chan and anything related to it with a vengeance, it's still a great server and mod. General Info The server is ran by Pastaspace, who pretty much made all of the mod on the server himself, and the server is ran by Dageoffant. Plenty of shit has been added to Freelancer with the mod, such as new ships, weapons, factions, and systems. Such examples are the Normandy, Star Wars ships, the Broski Enterprises faction, and the Sagan universe, which is filled to the brim with beautiful planets, and plays the remix of Carl Sagan. There is also bosses, such as the BR universe, with it's Brazillian mothership, Bob, the final boss, and the Broski Enterprises wreck in Darkon. How to play on /v/lancer First off, you'll have to download the mod and the patch (No Freelancer Mod Manager is required for the installation of the mod) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8OH3QXIG (The mod itself) http://www.mediafire.com/?rpqg9cc4bya161y (The patch) Then, just unzip both of those files to your Freelancer folder (usually program files/microsoft games/freelancer) To get the server to show up, you have to make a shortcut to freelancer.exe (once again, in the Freelancer folder). To the end of the target/path field, add -s173.64.65.234:7304. Make sure it's outside of the quotes. It should look something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe" -s173.64.65.234:7304 Before you start playing, I suggest reading the wiki, if you're new to Freelancer or the mod. It's also just generally a good idea to read it. Link: http://veelancer.wikia.com/wiki//v/lancer:_Starting_Guide If you feel like it as well, you can also join the Steam group. A lot of us hang out in there when we play, or just generally talk. Most of the time, if you want to install these mods, you'll have to have the Freelancer mod Manager, which you can download here: http://www.filefront.com/3211006/Freelancer-Mod-Manager-1.31/ If you want to find some mods for yourself, I suggest looking around on http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/mods
Woah, that looks really neat.
Such an amazing game. I love Freelancer. My father installed this today too!
I'm hoping maybe this thread will survive long enough for possibly a FP server or something :buddy:
God that looks like fun.
Needs a sequel
Needs a sequel
Too bad there won't be since Digital Anvil went down under. :smith:
If you want to play multiplayer, I recommend using the discovery mod, it's in my opinion the best mod out there.
I'm hoping maybe this thread will survive long enough for possibly a FP server or something :buddy:
We had an FP server running Discovery for quite a while. Died though. Played this for 96 hours in the course of two weeks. Most of that was spent grinding in omicron gamma. :argh:
If you want to play multiplayer, I recommend using the discovery mod, it's in my opinion the best mod out there.
A guy that is a long time Discovery player in the chat says that Discovery is only fun for killing people. Not my opinion, though. Never truly even played Discovery. He also showed some pictures of proof of the terrible community: [img_thumb]http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7244/amezukeenee1.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7884/amewin.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8915/ameculttime.jpg[/img_thumb] V:v:V
This seriously needs to get on steam, I already have it boxed but I want it as a digital download so I don't have to look for my disk every time I'm in the mood for freelancer. Thanks to this thread it's adventure closet time, because I want to play it again.
Oh, by the way, if anyone wants there's a demo at http://www.microsoft.com/games/freelancer/downloads_05.aspx Not sure how great it is though.
Found my disk, it was hidden under Battlefield 2142. Let's fucking do this!
The only problem I had with this game is that your Multiplayer progress felt based on your SP progress I never figured out how to start off a new ship in Multiplayer without making another save in singleplayer
This is good game
This is good game
It is GREATEST game

Has anyone tried crossfire?
Has anyone tried crossfire?
I played the really older version of it, I'm thinking of trying it out again sometime.
Where do I buy this? I played it before but lost the disk.
Where do I buy this? I played it before but lost the disk.
The only place I can think of is Amazon or someplace like that online.
Oh, I remember this game, I rented it once. It's a pity it's pretty much impossible to get nowadays, luckily I recently bought X3:TC, though the learning curve is way steeper. We seriously need more spacesims.
Probably the best game I've ever played. I remember years ago, when it was still in it's prime, multiplayer was such a blast. So many servers, so many mods... too bad so many people quit playing it. I think there is some petition by a bunch of players to release the source code for the game in order to make a player made "Freelancer 2".
If you guys all get discovery, I'll put up a dedicated Facepunch server for it.
Is this not available anywhere digitally?
Also why are you advertising the /v/ Steam group and server, considering Facepunch has one? http://steamcommunity.com/groups/facepunchfreelancers [editline]30th December 2010[/editline] Huh, I didn't know I was an admin in that group.
Because we have our own -mod-. Not just our own /v/ steam group for freelancer. Also, Discovery is shit. The only reason I still play it is to shoot people. Why the hell would we need -another- dedicated server for Discovery? There's already like six.
Because it would be for Facepunch people. And Discovery adds a lot of shit to the game. [editline]30th December 2010[/editline] And our server wouldn't require all that shitty roleplay.
>Adds a lot of shit to the game You got that right. Lots of shit alright. >Wouldn't require all that shitty roleplay. Play on Discovery of Discovery then. Just get a battleship and dick around. Fuck you start with a Rheinland Battleship in the middle of Liberty with like one of every factions guns.
