• My problem with "revolutionizing" Rail Shooters

*I typed this up for my Destructoid Cblog, so it seems bloggy.* The Wii seems to be the new home for the previously dying genre of On-Rail Shooters. I would absolutely love this if it hadn't been for every new rail shooter to come out trying to reinvent the genre. The thing I've always loved about rail shooters like House of the Dead and ARE51 were that they were easy and quick games to pick-up and play! Now developers want to make their games worth $50 dollars just to sell them for $50 even if the game its self does not want to be deserving of $50. They're turning a quick romp of a game into an overbearing unwelcome visit from one of my favorite Arcade genres. The game that made me realize what they're doing wrong was Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. I just finished the game today and I enjoyed it to an extent. My issues with it were the same issues I had with Dead Space: Extraction. Slow, too long, and repetitive (which is synonymous with rail shooters, which is why they're meant to be short). This genre was not meant to tell an entire story, which is what seems to be the new fad for this kind of game. They're all trying to be interactive cinematic experiences from the perspective a hero when they shouldn't be like that at all, unless they can make it actually fun to play. My playtime of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles clocked in at a little under [b]11 hours[/b]. I was playing on Normal, by myself, and using the pistol mainly (if that matters). That is way to fucking long, CAPCOM! Thanks to the length of the game I started to realize "All I'm doing is aiming at their heads over and over again and then shooting a boss' heart." which is normally the formula for all rail shooters - BUT I DON'T WANT TO NOTICE IT! By the beginning of the Code Veronica levels I was hungry for the ending. I remember a time when I never wanted House of the Dead 2 to end, and I could continue killing zombies in Rome with their lovable cheesy populace! Now with every new rail shooter I want it to end before it gets started! I think the only people doing it right are the masters of the genre, SEGA! House of the Dead: Overkill while not as good as its previous installments and incorporating elements of what I hate but toned down, it was still really fun and funny. And re-releasing House of the Dead 2 and 3, what a cool thing to do! Now all they need to do is release House of the Dead 4 and I'll never play any other rail shooter ever again! And if you didn't buy House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return AND you have a Wii, fuck you! tl;dr: Quit fucking up Rail Shooters with your 12 hour cinematic experiences!
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. The Resident Evils on the Wii have all been quite terrible except for 4. (That's assuming Darkside Chronicles isn't a rename of Umbrella Chronicles, I'm not entirely sure.)
Darkside isn't a rename, its a sequel. It's called "Darkside" cause it shows you the DARKSIDE of stuff. As upposed to the other light shit in the first game.

It really is a MASSIVE improvement from the first, but it still has the same issues.
The best way to play a rail shooter is in the arcade with a real light gun with real "recoil" and a pedal. [editline]12:46PM[/editline] Alternatively, SHOOT OUTSIDE OF THE SCREEN TO RELOAD.
If you want to make a cinematic experience you can either do one of two things. 1: Make a proper game about it. 2: get into fucking cinema. Heck a survival horror detective game for the Wii could be fun. Think Penumbra with a bit more puzzle solving and putting pieces together. Throw in a few silent hill elements and you could have yourself a pretty decent title.
The hell even plays rail-shooters any more anyway? Okay sure if it's Time Crisis in an arcade or whatever but God-damn why do people waste their money on Wii rail-shooters?
Rail shooters can be a lot of fun if done right. I remember playing Time Crisis 3 in the arcade, on the level where you're in the hull of a boat (or was it a huge airplane?) and all these crates are sliding around and people are shooting at you (and falling over themselves.) Fun times. [editline]03:03PM[/editline] Hell, just look at this video. [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6g6KymD0mw[/media] This random guy is trying to kill you with his ridiculously huge gunship thing while you fight him and his minions in cars. How is that not awesome?

Andfor that reason it is fantastic [editline]01:41AM[/editline] [QUOTE=ChestyMcGee;19933689]The hell even plays rail-shooters any more anyway? It's the people who are new to lightgun games wanting to revolutionize them, they need to fuck off. I didn't buy Darkside Chronicles, GameFly is great for this
People still make rail shooters?
It's called darkside because they took the same game but turned the lighting down really low.
Nah, not really. But thanks for trying.
You're complaining about Dead Space: Extraction being slow, too long, and too story based. That's what Extraction aimed for: an entirely unorthodox rail shooter experience that amounted more to a movie than to a rail shooter. Your problem is that you expect a traditional rail shooter from a non-traditional game. There's nothing wrong with the games, just with your expectations.
knife edge:best rail shooter everr

Like ninja mode which turns everyone into ninja and you throw throwing stars, the boss of the first mission gets changed from a helicopter into a samurai on a wierd kite with rocket launchers. :iia:
I added to my Gamefly queue
