The player/clients name in hl2 is by default "Gordon Freeman"

You can force change the name with the command setinfo name "JohnRCC"
Also before the community came out on steam, I think your steam friends name was your name in single player games.
You realize that more than one person can have the same name, right?

Odd, it always says it drops unknown from server. Wait, last time I saw that was when I was at the start without the HEV suit. I doubt it, but maybe you are player unknown till you get the HEV suit and the hud and such.
