• 360 disk drive starting to break

Well my xbox's disc drive is starting to shit out on me (i.e: Being stupid loud and reading game disc's as DVD's) So I was wondering if I am at risk of being banned if I buy another drive and install it since I already opened my xbox since I didn't wanna pay 60 dollars for a 20 dollar fan replacement. So pretty much am I at risk of being banned from xbox live if I buy and install a new disc drive? Yes give me dumbs for things I don't understand. doubt it.
Just a heads up, you can't simply buy another DVD drive and fit it, the drive is married to the motherboard via a specific key. This key can be flashed to the new drive, but you have to use iXtreme firmware to do so, which -will- get you banned, even if you use genuine games. The exception here are Liteon drives (And soon BenQ drives) utilising iXtreme LiteTouch, however, that's a whole new set of problems.
So would it be easier to go through and try clean it up a bit?
if it breaks hit it with a hammer. It won't fix anything but you will feel much better.
Send it in for repair.
It'd be nice if console developers would give people a little more freedom in fixing their hardware. That's one of the main things that keep me away from console gaming. It's hard for me to let someone else fix a simple problem such as that for a lot of money.

People say this statement alot when they get rated dumb once. I don't get it, are you an ebay power seller and just want us to contribute to your constant need of boxes or are you prepping yourself for being homeless?
Buy a PS3. Might not have the QUANTITY of games but the QUALITY is where it counts. Plus yeah you know, free internet play for life, lots of free to download content on the PSN. Better controller. Awesome sexy black looks. Built in George foreman grill. Touch sensitive buttons, disk sucking slot, sleek and sexy XMB, built in Internet browser, standard HDD that you can replace with a huge one, the power to blow women's clothes off, Folding @ home so you can help research cures for Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers, bottle opener, can opener, bike pump, heating tray for hot pockets and other various foods. Yeah go on, now tell me the 3shitty is better. End fanboyism.
They've up'd the warranty if you bought yours in the last 3 years, call'em
PC gaming.
I'd say it's a good idea to microwave it. :buddy:
Well thank you all for the sarcasm and ways to break something. But, today it completely broke, as in it won't open. I looked around and saw some people talking about how if you take the chip from the old DVD drive and put it into a new one of the same brand you won't have to flash it, can anyone confirm?
Mine doesn't open normally either, but you can jam a paper clip in there and pull it open.
No mine is completely broke, won't open, makes noise, doesn't read the disk that was in there until I got it out.

My 360 drive was toast, and my dad's friend had a spare laying around. We replaced it and it worked fine. Not banned either. This could be because it was another legit 360 drive, but they aren't married to the motherboard, it just has to be an authentic 360 drive
Well I'd like to know if the drive replacement would work or if I should buy another xbox because I don't want to waste money.

Because I've been doing 360 repairs for over a year, and the key on the drive almost certainly has to match the KeyVault held in the consoles NAND.
What I did: But a disk drive of the same type that is in your Xbox. Take the board out of the old drive and place it into the new one. Done.
Can't you buy the HD drives for xbox 360?
this is why you buy a pc, you can actually replace the parts that break down
you won't get banned from changing dvd drives. Lol unless if its illegal stuff :P but if you want to change drives you would need the dvd key from your drive and inputed into the new drive :O

ALSO what is wrong with people never fucking checking their support first? You usually have a warranty on stuff you buy, decent is at least a year for most electronic items. But still you gotta check the warranty and keep the receipt of sale, also with a good credit card, it doubles your warranty (the double coverage is basically the credit card company either pays for repairs or give you money to get it replace).
