The graphics that will be for the new old Runescape that is to be released.
Runescape staff has decided they're going to host the most liked 2007 Runescape, they claim it's because they want to make this to make their players happy which is only partially true.
We all know that there's been thousands of private Runescape servers over the years for 2005 - 2008, most get taken down rapidly.
I think it's pretty clear that they are doing this to try to break down the private servers they can't get to so that they gain more publicity and more money.
I'm not against this at all, especially if they get their "Level 4" on the polls in which case this is going to be completely free.
I remember when I actually played Runescape somewhere between 2004 to 2006, that there was a deal that if you bought membership which was around 25USD back then you got to play a member-only version of "Classic" Runescape which was the first released version of Runescape.

Classic runescape that may or may not actually be there.
I'm not sure if this is still open as even when I played there were very very few people who actually went on there and those who did were people who wanted to feel nostalgic about the old 1999/2000 Runescape and missed the graphics of it (it looked a whole lot like tibia but with rotatable cameras).
Level 1 - 50,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the current Runescape game, with an additional membership fee of around $15. These servers will receive no content updates and only critical maintenance.
Level 2 - 250,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the main Runescape game, supported by a small development team, with a smaller additional membership fee of around $5 extra. These servers will receive basic maintenance for bug fixes and little improvements, with the possibility of integrating our modern anti-bot technology over time, if it becomes necessary.
Level 3 - 500,000 or more votes:
2007 servers will come back as a separate entity to the main RuneScape game, with a dedicated development team, with no extra membership fee. These servers will receive regular maintenance, some content updates and integration of anti-bot technology if necessary.
Level 4 - 750,000 or more votes:
2007 Servers will come back as a separate entity to the main RuneScape game, with a larger dedicated development team with no extra membership fee and the free portion of the game available to all. These servers will receive continuous maintenance, modern anti-bot technology if necessary and - crucially - regular members' polls to determine which updates you want to see prioritised.
The poll will be live on the website this Friday 15th February for two weeks.
What do you think of this? Are you going to at least give the 2007 Runescape a shot if you did play Runescape back then for nostalgia? If not, how come?
_____
My personal opinion about this is that it's going to be better than the private servers who have hosted old versions of Runescape like 2006scape for many reasons as there will still be rules against hackers and people who use bots, so it's not going to be completely unfair like it has been on the private servers I've tried out.
Not to mention that this one isn't going to just disappear one day because one of the staff got pissed off at another or it's been taken down due to legal claims, it is going to stay up and you can trust that your items, progress and time spent into it is going to remain there for whenever you want to return.
As I mentioned, I will surely give it a try and play it a little bit for nostalgia with the music and graphics but I don't think I'm going to be as active as I once when I first played Runescape with my classmates, I think it will never really be the same.
However it IS the closest it will ever get.
That's really cool.
I spent loads of hours playing runescape back in 2002 - 2005, I sold my account to my friend in school for £30 when I got bored of it.

I hear some old accounts with event rares that are to never return nowadays are sold for insane prices like 400 euro.
Your friend, if he remembers the password, could have done a great deal if you have any.
Sounds good, i really liked playing Runescape years ago, but then i stopped being a member and couldn't play at all because my bank and inventory was full of members only stuff i couldn't get rid of. I much prefer the old graphics though.
I'd play this if it was free, but it seems like you need to pay Membership with the current Runescape for it.

That's how it was for the Classic Runescape and COULD potentially be for this 2007 Runescape, but as mentioned, if they reach 750,000 votes it will be free and some parts will be member only, just like it used to be. Free-players can all access the free-player areas and members can access the member an the free-players areas.
This is still when there's no PKing though right? Besides that stupid Bounty Level thing being around? I might re-play it if it does get to the 750,000 votes though.
Really looking forward for this :D
What do they mean with the $15,- or $5,- fee? Is it going to be monthly or one one time?
Oh god, the definition of grinding.
I remember playing it when it was 2d ish
I wish the bots were allowed on a purely situational basis... classic 'scape had the Train bots, who were scripted to simply walk from town to town in the free area. Follow them and you have essentially a runescape metro system. it was awesome.
If its a start from 0 deal then yes. Id love to, if it imports from classic. god no.
My worry is that there not gonna be 750k legit players anymore, let alone 750k legit players who want this

I got my account off a friend for £20, then he bought it back for £20 (so i basically leveled it for him :/) but then he later resold it me for £10 and for the past 6 years its been fully mine and made it fairly awesome

Hell, there is around 77k players online at the moment.

Not only that but the poll is a members-only thing apparently. So free players can't vote.
I'm still sour over jagex and runescape after they deleted my level 55 full rune + 2 handed rune sword character.
Would be nice to have it free so I can explore the membership areas.
I really hope they include widescreen/bigger window support like in the current Runescape because playing in a small box was one the worst thing when I played it back in its time.

I think they put Wilderness back as it once was because they made a poll about if they wanted it to be changed back or not and almost no one wanted to keep the new dumb crap their made.

You've got to set a custom size for quite a while now.
Not only that but the poll is a members-only thing apparently. So free players can't vote.
Is it now? The forums and the polls are for everyone now. Voting polls and forums were all for member-only but not anymore.
Really looking forward for this :D

The monthly fee if they do not get 750,000 votes (which would make it free, not a monthly free), but the membership means membership on the current Runescape, this 2007 Runescape and membership on all Jagex' other games on Funorb. (I THINK, IT USED TO BE THIS WAY BUT THEY COULD HAVE CHANGED IT, LOOK INTO IT)
The poll sounds like bullshit to me, 750,000+ votes? There aren't even that many people online playing much less paying for membership.

Well, the 2007 thing is clearly not for the current or the new players.
It's to get back the old players from the past who went inactive and those who left for the updates.
They did mention they're picking 2007 August in specific due to it being when Runescape was as most popular.
I do fully agree that it's an outrageous number, but it's not an impossible number.
There's 79k players playing right now at this moment, count together all players from 2005 - 2007 who played actively and I'm pretty sure you'll get a far higher number.
They're doing this since their numbers are at last decreasing. Since they launched the game, Runescape has almost always been increasing it seems, it always gets new players but it's finally getting less and less popular, especially with all the private servers going around.
I liked the old runescape a lot, but this is in no way to 'please' your old members.
Too bad 2006scape got shut down due to copyright issues, it would have been free altogether, members' areas and free alike.

I actually played quite a bit during that time. If there was less than 200k people online at one time, it was somewhat of a shocker. Even in the middle of the day, there was always 200k+ online, somehow. The game really was captivating and entertaining back then.
Wait, I'm kinda confused. Are they doing this for nostalgia or does nobody like what runescape has become today?

Runescape is fun game however when I play it. It's because of nostalgia.
Runescape is fun game however when I play it. It's because of nostalgia.
But is what it is today so different that you can't experience nostalgia? I wouldn't know, I stopped ages ago so I don't really know what's changed.

All items look different in-game and inside your inventory, they've changed the limits on things, the combat system is changed, quests are changed, the graphics are completely changed on the environment and all NPCs. Quests now have cutscenes and some are easier.
Everything expect the music has changed, basically. Not just to the looks, but the gameplay is different.

It's still grindtastic though right?

you have to be a member to vote though, and i doubt anyone who wants the old runescape's going to buy membership to vote
Personally Runescape is fun to me still and I did play a lot at that time, I might buy a month just to vote I don't know, I like the game even in it's current state but I feel like more should be freely available or just open the whole thing up with the running a cash shop and all.
