Can you play Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2 without HL2?

You probably get this a lot, but here's what I'm wondering:
I'm thinking about buying the Half Life 2 Episodes, but I don't own Half Life 2 itself. I do own a source game (Counter Strike: Source), but do I have to buy Half Life 2 in order to play the episodes?

Stop with the boxes, I was only asking a question...

Fine then, keep 'em coming.
Eps 1 and 2 are retail games, not mods or expansions so yes, you can.
Yes, they are standalone games.
So you don't HAVE to, but you SHOULD because they are direct "sequels" to HL2.
You can play them without HL2, but why would you want just the episodes and not Half Life 2 itself?
Well, I'm buying it in an airport because it's cheaper there, and they only sell the episodes, not the actual game. Besides, I've already played Half Life 2 on my Xbox, but I'd rather play the episodes on PC.

You should but you don't have to.
But I WANT to. Thanks for your help guys.
Xbox? You played it for XBOX? You poor, deprived child!
Sorry... I'm making it up by playing the episodes on PC like one is supposed to.
No, you need a magical unicorn :downs:
/sarcasm
No, you need to buy the original for PC. And then, to make up for your grave error, make a mod for it that's fucking AWESOME.
DO IT
Well how much does the airport sell them for? Because on Steam, now through July 4th, Episodes 1 and 2 are $5.35 each.

Just purchase a prepaid Visa card, if you do not have a way of purchasing goods online, as well.
The airport sells them for about 37 $...
Ok, fine, Steam is cheaper, but Steam doesn't give you a hard cover of the game that can pride your shelf, now does it?

I don't think we have that sort of black magic here in Iceland...
Yes, it's not like a DLC.
No, instead Steam gives you data files that stay in your computer and don't collect dust or take up physical space.
Wait, after I activate it, do I still need the disc to install the game?
And besides, just because I live in Iceland doesn't mean that I live in a 1 x 1 meter box where there's not an centimeter/inch to spare. I have more than enough physical space for another DVD box.
It'll copy over the game from the disk, but you'll need to download all the updates which might take a while.
Well, that's no problem.
HL1=BLUESHIFT=OPPOSINGFORCE > Half-Life 2 > Half-Life 2 Episode 1 > Half-Life 2 Episode 2. Get all of those, HL:BS and Opposing force happened at te same time as hl1 so in = sign.
wahh im getting boxes
The problem isn't how much room you have for a disc, it's that you aren't buying the whole orange box.
Buy the expansions in the airport and then buy HL2 for $6 on Steam.

An incredibly stupid question.
Why the fuck would completely seperate games on (at least in the case of episode 2, although also to a lesser extent with episode 1) a highly modified engine need the original game?
You probably get this a lot,
No we dont
Why not just buy the orange box for PC?
