2.5D FPS GAMES
Back when the age of video gaming was coming into it's own as a new medium and MS-DOS was the ruling overlord of the PC gaming market, developers sought new territory. Out of this, 2.5D was born, as developers soon discovered that true 3D games had steep requirements. This involved many limitations at the time, with many effects being that of sprites and at first, limiting the available space of a specific level and not allowing structures with layered floors. In time this would change though.

About the game
Is there any FPS, no, even GAME, that is as widely known as the almost God-like DOOM? You'd be hard pressed to find even a single gamer who lives under the largest of rocks who doesn't know of DOOM. DOOM was originally released as shareware which spread more rapidly then wildfire, and at one point, i quote "being installed on more PC's then Microsoft's Windows 95". But, also with it's massive amounts of fame and popularity and depiction of satanic and violent imagery, it was prone controversy. You play as the sole survivor of a catastrophic accident on mars where demons and other hell-spawn are let loose upon the surface and it's your mission to escape, while also sending these foul ghouls back to the depths of the hellish plane they came from.

About the game
The origin of the legendary game Halo and the developer Bungie Studios. This early FPS was originally for MAC's before being ported to windows later. It features 6 chapters split up into 27 different levels. What's unique about this early FPS title is that it featured a rich story, which you followed by reading messages left by an AI on computer terminals. What is also unique about this game, is that instead of featuring infinite clips for weapons, the player is required to reload after each spent magezine. It also features a multiplayer mode.

Marathon 2 adds much from the original, such as liquids, wider array of settings, higher resolutions and color depths, and is filled with plenty of ambient noises.

About the game
Regarding as having "popularized" the FPS genre, it is no doubt that Wolfenstein is overlooked when talking about revolutionizing the game genre. It was originally released as shareware, much like doom, it's gameplay consisted of fighting nazi's while attempting to escape from a stronghold.

I always thought as 2.5D more isometrical (think Diablo), but Iguess you can consider it the same way.
Also, if you liked Doom and what not, check out Skulltag, a source port of Doom. Not only does it support all three original Doom games (Ultimate, 1 and 2) but TNT and Plutonia. Not to mention it has an openGL mode with tons of options that make an old game look dead sexy. A long with the community and wide arrange of pwads to download, Skulltag is probably your best bet if you plan to play Doom.
Also, it plays Strife, Hexen, and Heretic as well.
i thought 2.5 was like 3d sidescrollers (little big planet, New super mario bros)
There is no official definition of a '2.5 D game'.
EDIT: Or a consensus
i thought 2.5 was like 3d sidescrollers (little big planet, New super mario bros)
Well, theres different meanings.
-graphical projections and techniques which cause a series of images or scenes to fake or appear to be three -dimensional (3D) when in fact they are not
or
-gameplay in an otherwise 3D game that is restricted to a two-dimensional plane.
Yes, those were copy pasta'd.
Marathon Durandal is the freaking shit but I like Infinity for the multiplayer though.
They aren't 2.5D, they're 2D.
Viewpoint does not matter. Sidescrollers with 3D models are 3D. Raycasters are 2D.
Wouldn't it be considered pseudo 3d?
im gonna have to go with meller yeller on this one
Shadow Warrior, mentioned at the bottom, was awesome. Also went by "Lo Wang: Shadow Warrior"
Whether or not it's 2.5D doesn't matter, people will figure it out when they read the OP.
Ah I love Dark Forces.
Here's some plot synopses for Marathon. Not sure if you want these or if they're too long.

Marathon I begins on board the titular Marathon, an enormous interstellar cruiser made from Mars's moon Deimos. Of important note are the three AIs in control of the Marathon-- Leela, Tycho, and Durandal. A hostile first contact has been made with a group of aliens, the Pfhor, and you've been tasked with cleaning up the mess-- since everybody else (including the AIs) are either useless or disabled. For the first part, Leela guides you through the ship, where you save helpless colonists and do damage control on a rampant Durandal. Eventually, you are kidnapped by Durandal, and after a few games get to the main part of the story-- getting him off of the slow and rapidly failing Marathon and into the invading alien ship-- which involves freeing the enslaved aliens and killing the rest.

Marathon II takes place many years after MI. You've been in cryogenic sleep and now Durandal needs you again-- to investigate an ancient civilization. He does not explain why-- but does mention that the mission is critical, as the Pfhor are planning to attack Earth. You uncover an ancient civilization and, with the help of Durandal, bring back an AI that drives back the Pfhor fleet by reviving the dead civilization.

Marathon Infinity is...Well, surreal. Something went horribly wrong in MII, and the player finds himself helplessly pulled through different, parallel universes, on different sides of the Durandal-Human-Pfhor conflict of the first two games. Something Durandal did in Marathon II unleashed...well, effectively a Lovecraftian nightmare creature, and in Marathon Infinity you try to stop that from even happening through many desperate attempts--including, in one universe, killing Durandal. In between jumping universes, you find yourself in some bizzare dream realm, possibly your subconscious, trying to make sense of it all. Eventually, you save the universe and possibly give Durandal what he's been looking for all along-immortality.
You forgot Marathon Infinity on that list; I'll see if I can get around to writing a description for Marathon II and Infinity.
He has all 3 Marathons on the list. :raise:

I missed it too at first but they are in there under Marathon.
I actually found my Dad's disk of HeXen II. That game is so fucking awesome.
I missed it too at first but they are in there under Marathon.
Ah, there it is. Was confused because M:D didn't get a picture.
Ah, there it is. Was confused because M:D didn't get a picture.
A good read though because I had no fucking clue what was going on Infinity.
-snip-
Oops bad reading.
I remember my dad bought Doom and Duke Nukem 3D when I was like 6
Doom 2 was released for XBLA
Marathon wasn't a sequel to Doom, it was made by Bungie
Marathon wasn't a sequel to Doom, it was made by Bungie
Formatting is off, the "sequel to Doom" refers to Doom II, not Marathon.
They're all using raycaster engines, I'm not sure if I wold count that as 2.5d, but whatever.
2.5D

FPS
...Wait, what? :pwn:
[editline]03:03AM[/editline]
I always thought 2.5D was like 2D platforming/sidescrollers with 3D elements in the foreground and background.

Playing the game with friends, alot. great fun with split-screen!
Ahhh Doom 1 and 2, good times... I still got Doom 1 for PS1 hanging around somewhere...
Wouldn't it be considered pseudo 3d?
That's what 2.5D is...
It is 3D since you move around the levels in 3 dimensions, not just 2.
Marathon wasn't a sequel to Doom, it was made by Bungie
I never said it was a sequel to doom.
