I bought the first Mass Effect for PC, but I never beat it. I never got that far into the game. I tried the Mass Effect 2 Demo for 360 and I really like it. I know that if you finish the first one your choices will affect the story in the second Mass Effect.
My question is that since I want to get Mass Effect 2 for the 360, should I just go ahead and buy the first one and beat it? Is it essential that you beat the first one to understand the story of the second?
Is it essential that you beat the first one to understand the story of the second?
No it's not essential, but I would suggest playing the first one for the side stories.
I had problems with the first mass effect I don't know why. It seemed some what slow and confusing for me? I don't think I played it right. Plus it was on PC for me, I think I should have gotten it for 360. What did you think about the first one? I know I'm kind of late to the Mass Effect crowd but I noticed the demo today when I got on xbox live so I thought I might give it a go.
Its not essential, but by importing your character from the first one you change some aspects of the story based on decisions in the past, which is neat.
I've had enough of your snide insinuations!
Play ME1 JUST for that.
Then repeat your action in ME2
I strongly recommend finishing Mass Effect 1 first.
I never understood why people play a sequel without playing/finishing the original. Yes, you should play the first.

I usually do, but I've heard Mass Effect 2 is different. If you knew me at all you would know I'm usually that kind of gamer to finish things chronologically.
It's a linear story, play the first game first.
Playing the first one overall makes it a more enjoyable experience on the second.
You should play Mass Effect, you'll understand the whole storyline, you'll know who Tali is; and you can import your save. Importing your save not only gives you bonuses, but changes plot points. Such as the survival of Certain People. You also keep your Shepard.
By importing your ME1 game, you're not really just playing ME2. You're becoming a little bit a part of it, because it's still your Shepard. Still his story, not some random character. You'll become attached to him, all the things you done in ME1, and the characters you see in ME2.
I bet you're still in the Citidel. Get past the Liara rescue mission and then ME1 gets fun. Get them both on the PC. They're better thanks to the UI.
I recommend playing ME1 first, as stated above it's really cool to import your character and you'll care more about him/her because of what you've been through.
You don't have to play ME1 to understand the story. I jumped onto ME2 and enjoyed myself.

Of course this works too, but playing the first game makes you enjoy the second game a lot more.
I played ME2 first, then went back to ME1.
Me1 helps the story, but is not needed at all.
Okay so basically OP, only dumb people don't finish ME1 before playing ME2.
Or just play it Star Wars style. Backwards.
But there's only three [Star Wars] movies
What?
4,5,6,1,2,3?

What the hell are you talking about? It goes A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi. Where the hell are you getting these numbers?
Well, the first Mass Effect is my favourite game ever, so, I suggest you play it.

A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are episodes IV, V, and VI.
lol

You're not making any sense.
The first of the series is episodes IV-VI. This is common knowledge. Even before the new trilogy was released, they were episodes IV-VI so if you're trying to pull the "New trilogy doesn't exist STAR WARS FORRRREVVVVVVVVERRRRRRRRRR..." then you're looking like an ass.
You will enjoy ME2 a lot more if you beat ME1 first.

This. Thank You. I might need to upgrade my computer though. I don't think my 9600 will be able to handle ME2 that well.
Yeah, you'll be able to run it at 50-60FPS assuming you have enough ram and a fast enough CPU

Plus it's on sale on steam RIGHT NOW (for the next 12 hours) for about $23
