MCforums thread.
So basically Mystcraft is a simple concept at it's core, you create "books" which function as teleports to different worlds.
Each book is filled with "symbols" each symbol affects how the world the book links to generates, for example one book might take you to a completely flat world comprised of nothing but sand. Another book might take you to an underground world where even the brightest torch cannot pierce the darkness, yet another book might take you to the void itself, filled with nothing but silence and and equipment you brought with you.
Basically there's something like 20000+ worlds that are possible and even then each one is unique like minecraft because they're generated off your seed.
Whats more interesting in my eyes is the gameplay that evolves from the teleportation system.
First of all you create a book, then by crafting a book with a feather you create a "descriptive book". There's 2 things you can do from here, write into the book with a writing table (we'll get back to this) or simply dive into the book and find yourself in a completely randomly defined world.
Unfortunately, when you read a book, you leave it on the world you read it on. The only way to get back is to bring a link book created on the original world with you, if you forget this then, well, you're absolutely fucked.
Back to writing tables, a writing table lets you first of all take a notepad (created with 9 paper) and enter all of the symbols from any book you have into the notepad, then when you create a fresh descriptive book you can put in your own custom world generation options (as long as you've discovered the symbols required) Also writing tables allow you to rename the worlds you create! (How cool is that!)
There's also this thing called decay, some worlds (most) are unstable, which results in the terrains slowly collapsing via a self propagating block that spreads itself and destroys other blocks and enables sand/gravel like gravity briefly causing the terrain to slowly crumble. It looks cool but it makes the game unplayably laggy, also it ruins otherwise awesome worlds so I'd recommend turning this feature off (there's a setting in the config file the mod generates)
The result is basically an incredibly convoluted and awesome custom world generation menu. With the added bonus of occasionally (read: all the fucking time) stranding yourself in completely foreign worlds and being forced to scavenge the required items to create books to get off your current world, think sliders but with more chicken and reed farming.
I'm enjoying it immensely right now, and once you get the basics down it's basically vanilla minecraft (you can combine forge mods with it though if that's what you're into) with crazy world gen so you don't have to spend like 10 hours reading up on all the crazy new crafting materials, just jump in game and travel to a shitload of custom worlds.
Places I've been:
Infinite void filled with snow.
A murky green flat world full of nothing but crystals and rain (and shitloads of hostile mobs)
A permanently night time desert world full of every hostile mob except the enderdragon.
An endless alpine forest filled with ghasts.
And currently I'm trapped in a flat world with a gigantic cave system, the world is 30% jungle and 70% mushroom biome, I'm currently waiting for reeds (which took quite some time to find) to grow as I type this, so I can get away from this hellhole.

Behind that smile lies a man broken by the sight of endless fields of mushrooms.
Give it a shot, it's not like any other mod I've played yet and it's incredibly fun.
Word of warning: Don't play on any world you don't want to accidentally get completely seperated from. It's technically possible to get back to your original overworld but it's very difficult and time consuming, treat the mod like it can utterly destroy your base and play with care. Also I recommend turning decay OFF in the config file as it lags your game like a fucking biiiiiitch.
Last time I played this I got trapped on an endless ice plate. By some amazing streak of luck I found some reeds just lying on the ice and I got the hell out of there

I know I posted that in the chat thread, but I must say this mod is awesome. One of the few mods that takes an existing mechanic and adds onto without greatly changing the game.
This is also great for SMP, sanctuaries to hide in with your friends, or go spelunking in a high-resource age.
Protip: Whenever you craft a descriptive book put two books in instead of just one, so you always create both a descriptive book and a linking book.
To get the full Myst experience this guy needs add the slideshow-style movement to the mod.
This mod was recently added to technic if you're playing a tekkit server and have nothing else to do with the launcher. Make sure technic's version is 7.2, then have fun!
ALSO: there's a rune you can get called Star Fissures. What does it do? It adds several holes from surface to the bottom around the linking place. But these star fissures a entirely different from adminium holes; They teleport you back to the alpha world without killing you! But, be careful; The star Fissures rune also adds a lot of world decay, making a floating base over a star fissure pretty much mandatory after about 10 minutes in the new age.
Holy shit this is awesome. Im going to try to create a base world with my study in which I shall discover the art of age writing, and I need to never forget my linking book so I can always get back to it.
If the age creation mechanics are what they seem, then maybe I can eventually tailor ages to my needs.
When you make an Age, you need to link in and back. Then put a Notebook in the left slot, and your new Age book in the right. The symbols used to make that Age will be copied to your notebook, which you can then use to write new ages. Make a descriptive book, but instead of immediately linking into it, put it in the left slot of your writing desk. Put the notebook in the right. To dscribe the age you want, click on the copied symbols in the notebook. The symbols page in the mystcraft wiki will be a huge help here as you won't see which symbol does what until it's too late.
If this confuses you I'll make a screenshot guide in a minute.
Man I wish the decay blocks were more optimized to not lag to shit. Noticing small changes at first, terrain that feels a bit off. Noticing the telltale 'tree with all its leaves on the ground and frantically booking it(heh) back to the link-in platform as large portions of the ground begin to sag and deep shafts start to appear. Finally safe on the pre-floating platform, gazing out upon the death of a universe.
So badass.
Until it chugs your machine down to the point java runs out of memory. That's less badass.
Technic decided it hates me, and it wants to crash every time I make a world, leave, then try to make a second one. Oh well. Anyway, on with the guide!
The recipes:

You'll need both of these if you plan to write your own ages.
Now, to write your own ages, it's actually pretty simple.
Make a descriptive book, and a writing desk. Put the writing desk down and right-click it, you'll notice a new GUI.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/5Pw07.png[/t]
The green arrow is a notebook, the blue arrow is the linking book you just made.

This is what you'll see. Click on the symbols near the notebook to describe the age; only 1 symbol per category or you'll start introducing decay into the age (and some symbols do that anyway)
But I'm in survival mode!
The notebook you made will be blank, featuring no symbols whatsoever.

This is where Mystcraft gets it's feeling of discovery; first you need to force Minecraft to generate some symbols for you. Do that by linking into the age (don't forget a linking book so you can go back!)
Here's my first age:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/CGvbj.jpg[/t]
Oooo, looks pretty, I might need to head there sometime when I've got better gear.
next, link back to the overworld (you did make a linking book in the overworld before travelling to the age, right? RIGHT?) and right-click the book on the ground, you'll see a bunch of symbols. Grab the book item from the top left to take the book back, you'll need the symbols from it.
Now try putting in the notebook and descriptive book as before, and--oh wow!

Mousing over these symbols will tell you what they do.
The next thing to do should be obvious; make another descriptive book and gather more symbols!
After you've got a few sets of symbols gathered, you're ready to write your own age. Have fun!
Oh, and if you're curious,[sp]using creative mode to generate a notebook will automatically fill in every single symbol available, so you can experiment.[/sp]
I'm hosting a server if anyone wants to join.
69.76.3.7:25565
You must have the forge version + forge to join.
Server's not working.
Been playing on a server with 3 other friends. Shit's awesome, we've explored 4-5 worlds each.
I generated a flat desert world with permasun and dense ores. We quarried an 8x8 area and got over 100 diamonds and a chest of cobble.
More quarrying shall occur and then we're going to build a gigantic library in a voidworld which will contain every linking book we create. A library of ages.

Holy shit just found this world and had to share it.
I'm making my house here later.
Here's a fun combo; Skyworlds, Eternal Dark, Mineshafts. Enjoy the floating woodwork maze.

Got any pictures? Sounds pretty neat.
I'm trying this mod out. First age I got to was this really cool place.
[T]http://i.imgur.com/pL90d.jpg[/T]
I'm going to call it swamp caves.
I died of falldamage for some reason upon enterring a new world. Trapped on an infinite icy plain with nought but trees for an eternity.
Oh and there's giant glowstone crystal formations jutting from the landscape.
At least there are animals but I'm surviving off apples at the moment and there's no water or reeds anywhere. I guess I'll just wait until my friends come online to rescue me :(
How fast does it take for Nothing (or, as it's commonly known, decay) to engulf an Age? I've found a few suspicious-looking craters, but they look naturally generated, and I didn't wait for it to settle any farther before I returned to the Overworld.
turn decay off imo until the creator fixes it chewing up 4000000gb of ram.
If you can't catch it in the act, look for tree trunks with the leaves fallen off.
Also always make a platform at the link-in point that's disconnected from the rest of the age.
But yeah unless it's like an ocean world with barely any ground at the bottom the lag will overtake you before the decay will

If you watch Direwolf's server plays you'd know he fixed it, but it isn't out yet so next version should have that done.

Yeah, I'll get some, just give me a few minutes to get another age like that. The original Age exploded due to decay.

By the way, the Mineshafts symbol isn't compatible with any other terrain features symbol; if you want floating mineshafts make sure 'mineshafts' is the only terrain gen symbol you include.
I haven't tried Dungeons yet but I'd assume that's even more fun due to the fact there'd be random floating holes in your pathways.

Here's a picture from the side of one such giant floating maze.

If I get trapped on a world without a linking book but I have enough materials to make books, how would I get back to the overworld?
If I get trapped on a world without a linking book but I have enough materials to make books, how would I get back to the overworld?
Keep making books until you get a star fissure, then jump in.
Also substitute the Sliders theme for the Myst music.
So we're playing all chill and fun, but one of my friends is being a dick, stealing diamonds (we're playing communistically, all working together and sharing resources but he just took 64 diamonds, made a suit of diamond armor then logged out for the night)
Well we had an idea for revenge.
We've replaced the main hub teleport in one of the ages with a trap. It leads to a void world with a small island we built for him to spawn on. It contains 2 birch saplings, 2 water buckets, 1 reed, 16 eggs, 3 feathers, a writing table and a small house on the little floating island.
Tomorrow morning our friend is going to be playing sliders. I might fraps it if I'm on at the time. It's going to be fucking hilarious.
I made a few worlds, took a couple of screenshots.

The top one is my favourite, it's pretty much just obsidian poles around the place.

You found Obelisks, congrats. I've never gotten legit ones.

You also don't realize how much that makes me want to join you guys. Wish they'd add Mystcraft to Tekkit.
On the server log he joined and so did one of my other friends, no idea if it happened or not since they're both offline now. I didn't trust my other friends with it because 99% chance they botch it. I really hope they didn't.
Dense ores + Star fissures = so much minerals

I always wanted to try this mod out, it's pretty cool. but I had an older version which wasn't compatible with TMI and I didn't want to start a clean jar after having so much mods already inside my minecraft jar, latest version fixed compatibility issues, which is great.
