Valve Software's Steamworks suite will power all PC copies of 4A's post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2033, Valve and publisher THQ announced today.
Steamworks will give provide "auto-updating, Steam Achievements, Steam support for in-game DLC, and more" while requiring Metro 2033 be played through Steam.
Based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 is a moody shooter with RPG elements set in the subways and surface of a frozen post-apocalyptic Moscow.
Metro 2033 arrives for PC and Xbox 360 on March 16 in North America followed by a European launch on March 19, packing DirectX 11 features on PC. THQ is offering a free copy of space asshole simulator Red Faction Guerrila with pre-orders on Steam.
Digital distributors Impulse, GamersGate and Direct2Drive are unsurprisingly not offering Metro 2033. The three publicly aired their discontent with Modern Warfare 2's use of Steamworks, griping that it would require they also distribute their competitors's sales platform--which led D2D to describe Steamworks as a "Trojan Horse."
QQ some more.
Good.
Steam is the only digital distributor you really need.
Good, its only their loss if they dont offer 2033.

Still, it's good to have some competition around. Keeps them from going completely bonkers. You never know, Valve could get some dickhead CEO like Activision did.

Let's hope it doesn't.

If Valve gets a CEO like that PC gaming will die.

I agree but we need another one or two, keeps prices lower and it prevents them from having the monopoly they have now in the digital distributor market.

More like a pony and a plastic rocket.
As much I love steam and their platform, there's a word for a market with no competition in it. It's called a monopoly. It's illegal.
How are they destroying the competition by having a few games which require it? That's kind of like saying Sony is monopolising the console market because they have some exclusive games.
I still use GamersGate occasionally even though I'm more of a Steam person.

How can you disagree with him? I love Steam too but he's entirely correct, monopolies are illegal in the United States.

It's not illegal if they had no hand in their competitors going out of business. And I doubt Washington will bail out obscure companies.
Edit:
From the Sherman Anti-Trust Act;
Section 1. Every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal.
Section 2. Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony, and, on conviction thereof, shall be punished by fine..

It would require action on Valve's part to convict them of forming a monopoly.

That doesn't keep them from occurring. There are loopholes.
Isn't the OP's avatar Ryu-Gi?
They're just being babies.
You really think if a developer used something exclusive to Impulse that Valve wouldn't still offer it on Steam?

Umm, yes actually
Making just one game exclusive to Steam is a monopoly?
Steam is the best.

That's what exclusive means.
I like Steam, but I refuse to acknowledge them until they stop ripping Europeans off.
That's what exclusive means.
I mean, do you think Valve would refuse to the sell a game that required you to install Impulse?
Heh, space asshole simulator

Well it's also on XBox, and I'm assuming you can buy it retail and activate it on Steam, so not really a monopoly, just other crappy distributors whining like always because their software is awful.

it's only a monopoly if they're actively shutting down competition. anyone could set up their own digital distribution service, and steam is the only decent one at the moment, so all the others are dying out. it ain't against the law.
One game uses Steamworks/Is steam exclusive.
Other distributors turn in their sleep and scream out into the night: "MONOPOLY!"

Valve doesn't set the prices fyi

Except Steam is actually better than the competition. They aren't using any unfair tactics or anything.
Buying out the others and shutting them down is monopolizing.
Being better isn't. idiots.

Uh yes there is competition, however game developers choose Steam over the competition. Why? Easy control of updates and a fucking giant community.
