• Making a "let's play", what do i need to know?

As the title says, i've decided to try my hands at one of those "let's play" series. Problem is, I have no idea how to go about recording, editing, etc. Someone said I need a capture card to get the video, and a mic can make the audio, but i don't know much about how they work or their price range. So.. any ideas as to what kind of card i should get/additional software? btw if this is the wrong thread to post this in, i'm sorry.
Well, if you're going to record it from your Xbox 360 / PS3 then you will need to get a capture card or whatever they are called. Most people who do that add in the audio while editing it, after, on their computer. If you're going to record it from your PC, all you really need is a program like Fraps or something.. And good FPS / Quality.
And whatever you do, don't make it shitty. Otherwise, you'll be Retsupurae'd.
don't have an annoying voice, don't make dumb jokes, rerun through it if it takes you long to get past a certain part, as to not have like 3 videos up all having you trying to climb over a wall.
Just a tip from an avid Let's play aficionado... Shut up occasionally... You wouldn't believe the quantity of bad let's plays due to the gamer chatting the whole damn time...
Make sure you've hit puberty.
Don't swear constantly.
Be mature, don't try to act 'cool' and make sure you don't sound like a whiny 12 year old.
I'm gonna make a SWAT 4 lets play. Tips: Record by using your speakers, unmute your microphone so that when you speak through it, it comes out through your speakers.
There is multiable ways of doing these. You can do silent ones (I did this once, no mic no talking. Just pure gameplay) You can record gameplay, than watch it and dub over it. You can record and talk at the same time. Expirement and make your own style.
Don't talk every 2 seconds.

i'm trying to make a BioShock 2 LP, and i want to have it as running commentary, but i talk on skype constantly, so how could i make it so that Fraps doesn't record Skype, or is it impossible? also i don't mean it recording me on skype, i mean my friends

Worked good.
I was just blowing stuff out of my ass, I don't actually know how to do it. Help.

Start with a short game that has low requirements, get Fraps, set audio to what you hear. Then go to audio settings on your comp and go to playback then unmute microphone. Keep in mind I use XP.
I use vista. Theres my problem.
Find this:
this in vista/7: Also, What you hear is probably called stereo mix.
You could also do a silent one with text captions.
I find these better. You don't get annoyed by voices and you can turn it off if you just wanna see gameplay.
I have something called Realtek HD audio manager.
not that. its just "volume mixer" it has a speaker(grey/white?) with green sound waves right click it and select volume mixer. I think you should talk as much as possible, that's what makes a let's play a let's play. Otherwise it's just a playthrough.
As a frequent LP viewer, I can give you a few tips of things that really REALLY annoy me while watching a let's play. 1. Turn on the subtitles, fucking seriously, turn them on god damn! 2. Don't fucking talk during cut-scenes or when characters in-game are telling you your objective. 3. Don't upload shitty quality videos, they are just shitty and not enjoyable to watch at all. 4. Make a few test videos with talking and in-game sound to make sure they are balanced well so that you don't overpower the game's sound, and the game's sound doesn't over-power you. 5. I guess this is rather self-explanatory, but if you aren't going to be using a mic to talk, then don't fucking call it a let's play. Because it's not. It's just a video of you playing through the game. [editline]12:32AM[/editline] Haven't watched this entire video, but I have watched his let's plays and they are good, so I suppose he would know how to make them: [editline]12:33AM[/editline] Here is an example of how to NOT make a let's play: "Oh look a cut-scene, blah blah blah, ima talk over it blah blah, i know everything about this game, blah blah blah." Shut the fuck up guy, god damn
not that. its just "volume mixer" it has a speaker(grey/white?) with green sound waves right click it and select volume mixer. The only problem I am having right now is the voice stuff.
The latest version of FRAPS under Win7 has an option to record both playback (the game's) sound, AND an optional input of your choice.
Do a screenshot with captions. Make some of the captions funny. Only use videos when you want to demonstrate something in the game. If you make it all video then I have to watch it your pace, instead of mine, and that puts me off. Basically, if you go to the Let's Play Archive and read "The Dark ID's" Resident Evil ones, you'll get an example of a Let's Play that's Funny, Informative, Interesting, can read at your own pace and enjoyable. Unless you're doing an FPS then It won't work because watching someone else do an FPS is pretty pointless.

Using a separate program to record microphone input gives a lot more flexibility, the only problem is that you have to sync the voice recording with the audio which can be time consuming.
