Thief Series- "I've never robbed a god before. It'll be a challenge."

Thief is a series of games chronicling the story of Garrett, a master thief who stalks the nights of a metropolis known only as "The City," stealing from the rich to give to himself. He claims to only be looking out for himself, yet fate always has a way of pulling him into events when the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
Thief is arguably one of the most important, if not the most important, progenitor of modern stealth games next to the Metal Gear series. The series is famous for complicated, non-linear missions with sophisticated AI to challenge your stealth skills. It is also famous for employing sound as a gameplay element; rather than relying on radar or third-person modes, you will be listening intently for enemies to locate them well before you can see them. You must also be careful to avoid making sound yourself, or else guards will grow suspicious. Finally, the game is famous for employing a non-lethal style; where most games encourage you to slaughter your enemies, this game encourages you to avoid killing enemies. On higher difficulties, it will even result in an instant game over.
Each of the released games are rather old; they will require community fixes to run properly on modern hardware.
Stalk your prey on the quest for stolen goods with your blackjack, sword, and an assortment of unique arrows. Steal for money and uncover the hidden agendas of your allies and enemies as you play through an unravelling story of deception and revenge. Survive in a world where shadows are your only ally, trust is not an option, and confrontation results in death!
Thief: Gold is a re-released version of the original Thief. It includes bug fixes and additional maps. This is the one that started it all. Be warned, for at the time the stealth genre did not exist. The developers included combat sections for fear that audiences will not react positively to a pure stealth game. These combat sections are considered the weak parts of the game. If you can ignore these, you will be in for a great experience.
The ultimate thief is back! Tread softly as you make your way through 15 new complex, non-linear levels full of loot to steal and guards to outsmart. Improved enemy AI, new gadgets and a riveting story will draw you into the world of Thief™ II: The Metal Age, a place of powerful new technologies, fanatical religions and corruption.
The sequel to the original is considered by many, including myself, to be the best in the series. The developers learned their lesson and removed all combat sections entirely. The levels are made even larger and more complicated, resulting in capers that could give you many hours of quiet tension, with the best of these levels being called "Life of the Party."
There was going to be a Thief II: Gold edition, but the studio folded before it could be made.
You are Garrett, the master thief. Rarely seen and never caught, Garrett is the best that ever was. Thief gets a "Next Gen" coat of paint, two generations ago. Considered by many to be not as good as the original two, but still a decent stealth game. Famous for the "Shalebridge Cradle" level, considered by many to be the scariest level in a videogame in history; even more so than many dedicated horror games.

I actually made a thief megathread a little while back, but it's since disappeared.
