Has the success of Call of Duty done more harm than good? http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/116/1160501p1.html
For centuries, man has been predicting the end of the world as we know it. The Mayans, Nostradamus, R.E.M. – they've all been singing the same tune. What none of them managed to predict however, was that the world would be destroyed by Call of Duty. Well, the world of video games, at least. Come on, you've been sensing it for a while. You've looked on in despair as yet another FPS is released that wants to be Black Ops. You've felt the mounting deluge of dissatisfaction that's been building inside you ever since Activision clearly realised Call of Duty 4 was a gambit that very much paid off, and could conceivably continue to pay off year, after year, after year at the cost of an entire genre of gaming. So what do you do about it? Once it's dawned on you that you've been playing the same game with different titles for years now, you look to alternatives. But guess what? They're all uncomfortably familiar; especially when it comes time to go online. At this point your internal reactor reaches critical mass, explodes, and your passion for the act of first-person digital warfare becomes a shadow burnt into the couch where you used to sit for hours and ponder the great quandaries of the 21st century schizoid gamer: "AK-74u w/ grip or FAMAS?" and "Where best to camp?" and, gradually, "Wow, this kind of sucks," and, eventually, "Why is everything trying to be this game?" At best, it's brought new systems of designing FPSs to be popular. Perks and such. Also, the instant feedback on how you're doing, (BC2 numbers here) 50 points for a kill, but 30 for healing someone, so you actually know doing teamwork helps you, as well as everyone else.
We can see that a lot of FPSs/shooters nowadays are copying a lot of the systems and aesthetics CoD brought especially concerning online play (perks, killstreaks etc.). But I don't think it'll "destroy" the "world of gaming" nor end up as a permanent style in games, but rather just a state that'll eventually pass in time. People had been saying the same thing when Doom, GTA III, Half-Life, Warcraft and shizz came out where a lot of people claiming most are just carbon copy clones of the originals that made a lot of the gameplay mechanics great. Sure some stuff will definitely stay in the genre, but that's always been a common thing whenever a big blockbuster video game does something to redefine a genre, eventually the "feeling of copies" and stuff will pass and there would be another game almost everyone will try to copy and take the spotlight.
Why can't everyone copy shadow of the colossus? Monster hunter? Half-life? Call of duty style is so...bland.
don't need to read an article to know how it did.
Oh god, not this again. CoD just did somethings a lot of games didn't. Either way, I don't play CoD
Has the success of Call of Duty done more harm than good?
Well, duh. [editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
Why can't everyone copy shadow of the colossus? Monster hunter? Half-life? Call of duty style is so...bland.
Wasn't there a lot of games trying to copy HL1 when it was released?
Why can't everyone copy shadow of the colossus? Monster hunter? Half-life? Call of duty style is so...bland.
Because kids like Call of Duty and kids mean money. So everyone is going after that concept.

COD is nice if your in the mood for something like Rambo, where you can pick up a gun and rush in single handedly.
recent cod games aren't necessarily bad, just extremely generic.
It's not going to be anything permanant, people will always copy what's popular for a while, some of the copies will do somewhat well but most won't. Sooner or later when people work out that just copying cod gets you nowhere everything will settle down.
oh and the community is absolute shit automeeerge
Oh god, not this again. CoD just did somethings a lot of games didn't. Either way, I don't play CoD
Yeah, they did with Call of Duty 4 and after there 80% of first person shooters just do the same.
oh and the community is absolute shit
that can be said for 90 percent of popular games out there. Having some dicks in the community is inevitable once a game becomes popular
I don't really like cod, I think it's really bland and uninteresting and I'd never spend money on it and definitely wouldn't bother with the campaign. But having said that, it's the best game I've played for sitting around the tv with my flatmates and having some senseless violence. So in the right environment it's lots of fun. I wish we could find a game that was better for it, though. The 360 seems to be very much lacking in the 3-players-on-one-xbox department which is shitty.
cod is nice for spraying randomly and getting kills without having to aim at people. there are plenty of videos of people completely missing other people in their montages and yet still getting the kill. i swear the hitboxes are as big as a brick fucking wall.
