With the rapid approach of the 2010 Olympic games, an ingame event known as The Spirit of Competition arrives.
For those who don't know what this event is:
Every two years, the Spirits of Competition grow especially fervent, and draw close to the mortal realm. During such times, members of both the Alliance and Horde can honor the spirits and earn Competitor's Tabards by seeking to defeat one another in the battlegrounds. For victory in competition, they can also earn the spirits' favor in the form of a prized gold medal - and the special pet it summons.

Going for Gold
To participate in the Spirits of Competition event, simply enter any battleground and do your best to help your team win. All participants will earn a special tabard honoring their competitive spirit. The Competitor's Tabard is a rare (blue) tabard and can be seen on the commoners proclaiming the event. For each victory, you'll also have the chance of winning a gold medal as well. You'll receive these rewards in the mail. Continue winning battlegrounds for the duration of the event to increase your chances for the gold medal.
Can't wait for this, never participated in one, but am looking forward to.
When do they start?
When do they start?
Usually around the same time when the Olympics starts.
I prefer the Spirit of the Radio, but thats just me.
-fuck-
Type: Holiday Event
Date: August 8 - August 24
Location: Cities, Battlegrounds
:downs:
They haven't updated it for the Winter Olympics. If you read the description, it explains how the event is carried out.
August 8 - August 24 was when the Summer Olympics were taking place.
What do the gold medals do?

ah motherfucker didnt think about that
I never participate in any of these WoW-events. Sometimes, like christmas I just grab a gnome suit, but that's pretty much it.
I don't care about them achievements, and I find it pathetic when people are farming them instead of getting new gear and stuff that actually matter, you know in combat.
Winning battlegrounds as alliance? HAHAHAHA

They're obviously "baddies"
So you made a thread for an event in August?
Some people play videos games for fun. Weird huh?
Yep. It's so fun to have a decent/good gear and own people critting for thousands, rather than farm achievements.
At this time is is not for the Winter Olympics...
And i dont theres gonna be mutch snow left in cata
So you made a thread for an event in August?
No, I made a thread for an event that goes with the Olympics. The page hasn't updated yet for the Winter Olympics yet.
I don't think they'll do it for the Winter Olympics, I have a feeling this was a one-time thing for the Beijing Olympics, due to the dragon (derp).

Then why would they say "Every two Years"? Also I sense that it would be really likely due to the fact that we are Northrend right now.
So when is the winter Olympics? In december?

Well maybe that's just the way they got it into the lore, because a chinese dragon doesn't seem to suit the winter olympics, especially not if they aren't in China.
So when is the winter Olympics? In december?
This February.

What if they change the pet this year. :downs:

I speculate that it might be either a Moose, Beaver, or a baby Shoveltusk.
A blue has responded about this event.

Q. Can we expect a Canadian style pet for the Olympics this year?
A. I will put in a request today for an epic moose mount, not sure if it will make it in though.
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start the event until Tuesday. Something like this might require downtime.
