Comms I would like to emphasize that all of the images in this thread are pre Wurm 1.0
1. What is Wurm?
Wurm Online is a free Java based MMO where players, either alone or in groups, are thrown into an unmapped and wild land, colonizing the land and defending it from both wild animals and foreign invaders like settlers of old. From large peaks to hidden valleys, the world of Wurm is absolutely gargantuan, taking many hours to reach one corner of the map to another, which can allow for seclusion from the rest of the world. From clear-cutting forests completely leaving nothing but stumps, terraforming small hills into mountains (if you know the trade secrets), and even allowing for building of houses wherever you please, Wurm truly allows for an unheard of amount of freedom making it one of the most freeform MMO's around. On top of many trade skills you can acquire, it does have a weak fighting system that is mainly supported by quality crafters. From this system, not only do wars sprout out between players, towns, and even nations, but diplomacy sometimes rises from the ashes of war. Basically it's a Medieval aged survival MMO reliant upon crafting, exploring, and community building. Unlike other "community based MMOs" that are more like social networking games, Wurm daunts the player with tasks that forces even the biggest turbonerde poopsocker to work together with others. The crafting itself is pretty straightforward: mine iron ore, smelt it in a forge (which also has to be crafted), use your (crafted) tools on iron lumps/anvils, etc. For wood shit, you cut trees down with an axe, cut the felled tree into logs, use your saw/carving knife on the log, and so on. Everything kind of explains itself, and discovering how to craft is part of the magic of Wurm so I won't go into much detail (although thankfully the Wurm wiki is always there if you don't know how to make something, more on that later). Exploration is a big feature of Wurm. NOTHING in Wurm is pre-generated or pre-made by the developers (besides obvious things like server portals); The terrain was randomly generated when the servers were launched, and all towns and items are created by players. So, if you wander through the woods and find a giant spire or ruins of an old castle, that was someone's pet project months ago! There's also dynamic weather, like day/night cycles, rainstorms, thick fog, sandstorms, etc. I should also mention that there are no loading screens except for the initial one. Terraforming is also a big part of Wurm. The terrain is grid-based, and you can mine rock and dig/drop dirt to morph the terrain. Other possible projects are things like massive earth walls around towns, big docks for ships, or just giant fuckoff dong towers. It has been likened to 3D multiplayer Dwarf Fortress, which is a pretty good comparison.
2. What's New?
The game's graphics have changed in the last few years so it no longer looks like ass shit from the late 90s. The game itself is beautiful on high graphics and new creature animations are being added. I might also add that Notch, creator of Minecraft, was heavily involved in Wurm as a co-developer years ago. Of course, in Notch's absence, Rolf has now headed the vacation-taking department. There's been a lot of changes to Wurm recently, here's a little index that I made of major updates since 2010. I. Gameplay mechanics -Items now can become rare upon creation and improvement, allowing for the items to gain bonuses - Houses are able to be constructed to around 40~ storeys tall - Some boring changes to PvP - Bulk items have become easier to create, planks, stone bricks, etc - New creatures, for example the hellhorse & bison - Don't lose as much material, (or in some cases none at all) when you fail to create an item. For example, failing with a mallet doesn't destroy your head and shaft, failing with a plank doesn't use up 4kg of wood - Can pick up bulk and food storage bins provided they're empty - Can make papyrus paper from reeds and write on it, along with a new skill papyrus making -Can drag items directly from a cart to a BSB -Can take a hitched cart through double doors -Carts can go up a 40 slope -So can horses -Concrete, which raises rock II. Appearance -Animals now have sexy models and animations. - Inner house walls, double doors, and a new arched type of wall -Armor models which appear on the player -So do toolbelts and backpacks. -Full animations for everything -Rain doesn't go through your roof anymore -BEARDS, character customisation. -Morrowind faces. -Changes to wall models and textures, most notably the tall stone wall. -Somewhat high resolution terrain textures. -No more ? bags.
3. The Wurm World
Currently, the Wurm world is split into two distinctly different server clusters. The Freedom Server cluster which allows crafters to go about their business without interruptions from PvP combat (apart from the Chaos server, which is the old Wild server). And the Epic Server cluster, which is a battle between Blacklighters (Horde of the Summoned), Whitelighters (Jenn Kellon, Mol Rehan) and player made kingdoms (PMKs, for short). The lights are cleverly named after the beams of light that extend from the main altars of the gods. The Epic server has increased skillgain. The Freedom Server is mainly focused on PvE action, with people running and owning businesses buying and selling without the worry that someone will come and break down their door. However, many players perceive as boring since there is no risk vs. reward. The Epic Server, on the other hand, is the PvP server which incorporates part of the business feel on the Freedom Server with the need to build walls and protection along with it. For on the Epic server, there's always a warring kingdom or faction that wants you dead and your business burnt down to the ground. Some players find that scary and don't want to lose their work, but personally I believe living in a place where danger is completely cut from the equation just isn't the answer. I digress. When you go to the Epic server, you leave your skills and items behind on Freedom and start anew. http://blackburrow.s3-external-3.amazonaws.com/overmap/wurm_overmap.html Note that servers may have been updated. Prestine isn't labelled.
4. The History of Facepunch
Raloc (our lord and savior) was the original founder and brought Facepunch into Wurm. Facepunch has had many different villages and splinter groups within Wurm; this is due to power struggles and general idiocy. Camps would fall as quickly as they were made but the old Wurmers would always find themselves ending up at The Pirate Outpost. This camp was created by Raloc and the name has been used nearly every time a new village gets founded, apart from in recent times. I. Timeline ~2009 - Some invasions I wasn't around for, all the pirate outposts & shanty towns. Summer(?) 2010 - Minges tirith I, led by PvtRyan and settling on Blood Gulch on the GV server. Winter 2010 - Mingapore, led by the amazing Scribbles, settling somewhere in the center-south of freedom. Drama with 4chan who settled nearby. Spring 2011 - Minges Tirith II, led by I can't remember. FP Navy founded by yours truly, highly successful in piracy. Disbanded 4chan village to the north and an inactive goon village to the south. Griefed Mcdaniel hard. After Minges Tirith II - Went back to Mingapore, wasn't disbanded. Made our home here for a short while. Rebuilt Mingapore Ranger HQ. Drama with Redhawk begins. April 2011 - Few of us head off to the wild server. Redhawk & Mcdaniel in the same village as us. Near constant drama. Redhawk cleverly forges logs and slanders us pretty bad. Mcdaniel does nothing much and is just a retard. Atazs gets accused of hacking and gets us kicked out. May 2011(?) - Minglamabad, led by myself, was fun while it lasted, not very successful. Established the first Facepunch arena. Late Summer 2011 - OIFY Island. We head off to the Deliverence server in aims of settling on an island. Everything goes according to plan. BrQ takes my corbita and I never see the Black Pearl again. Island named OIFY Island by the peoples of Deliverence (?). January 2012 - Invasion on Chaos. PvP server. Settled on the north-east at first. Invited to live with MILP and his large deed. We set off to there. Drama ensues as looting disbanded settlements is frowned upon. Also Tyre Bay are a bunch of geriatric pricks. At some point we decide to head over to Epic for the first time, several of us moving into Black Summit. General boredom means we all go inactive. September 2012 - Invasion of the Epic Server. Somalia. Not a whole lot of drama. Somalians pretty much allied with the main power of BL. After members going inactive some of us move to the BL capital, Dragonspine Castle. Once again, start going inactive after a while. Only to be brought back by Wurm 1.0 II. Thread Archive (thanks to Robertayo!) We should keep these links to the older Wurm threads, for history's sake, plus there's a bunch of old screenshots there, including a few from Mingapore. How to Start
Go to http://www.wurmonline.com/ and register an account. Don't worry, it's free (unless you want to pay for other features, but free accounts can do basically everything as it is) When you log in, go through the tutorial and reach the end, it prompts you to pick a kingdom/server and shit, choose wherever the fuck you want. A large majority of us are on the Prestine server however. And it may be advised you come here. We have an invite alt at the spawnpoint which basically, invites you to the deed. Then you can /suicide and teleport here. Neato!
6. What to do when you arrive/How to play
You'll want to join here http://steamcommunity.com/groups/MingesTirith and head into group chat, a few quick directions and you can be with us. Once we arrive, you'll want to make tools and shit for basic survival. But we'll probably help you out. Wurm's a very communist sort of game, so if you need something, just ask a comrade. A word of warning though: the community is naturally filled with the pubbiest sort of pubbies imaginable. That makes it all the funner to troll them by, though! This is your Bible: http://wurmonline.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page If you're ingame press H and a wiki search window will come up. Then, type the name of what you're looking for in the box and a wiki window will pop up, neato. Any possible question you can have about Wurm will be answered here. Believe me, you will have a lot questions so don't sweat it. There is also a help chat ingame and if you need anything just ask. You can private message people by typing /t *playername* These are the lowest graphics by the way. I. Fighting Pay attention to this, children, this shit's important. So how do you fight? First, SWITCH OFF AUTOFIGHT. Right click and target what you want to kill. It's advised to also right click and turn spam mode on. In the combat tab, it tells you if you hit something or something hit you. Additionally, in the upper right you will see some very useful information, which is what fighting mode you're using (Normal fighting is highly recommended); your distance from the animal you're fighting; and your footing. Good footing is achieved by a height advantage or a mount (horses, bears, etc). That's pretty much it.
7. TEAMSPEAK, STEAM GROUP, IRC
Steam group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/MingesTirith Teamspeak: fellowsgame.net IRC: When you get into the game, press F1 and type IRC. In the IRC window that comes up type /join #mingapore and you're in! Here's a bit of history I'm leaving in, as a memorial of Somalia Edit: Currently we're at our village but the invasion is still going and we will accept more people! Here's our village as of 30/08/2012 [img_thumb]http://gyazo.com/f7f7eff403a98bddad684e2979392b92.png[/img_thumb]
Do they reset accounts? I think I may have mine from 2010
If it ever had premium its probably still there but dont bother. Unless you want the name create a new character. Everyone starts over on epic. [editline]16th August 2012[/editline]
[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6438288/Facepunch/wurm.20110220.1445.jpg[/t]
Here most boats are locked with a 50+ql lock sadly.

I wont be able to come down until late August, so you should have a decent spot sorted by then
here's some of my favourite pictures and heres a bit of PvP from epic
Who's that beast riding the champ spider?
also remember, invasion this saturday!
Was it with you Trulli when we went to the mountains and we were being chased by some creature, we both fell down the mountain, you died and i was barely surviving with 10% health?
Was it with you Trulli when we went to the mountains and we were being chased by some creature, we both fell down the mountain, you died and i was barely surviving with 10% health?
Yeah, we were being chased by a spider and then i said there's only one way or something, so we jumped off the mountain into the water :v
Do they reset accounts? I think I may have mine from 2010
They do, but the exact circumstances they do is uncertain. You will definitely not get your character wiped if you were, at any point, premium. However, I hear that they wipe free players every 90 days, but I heard if you accumulated at least a day of playtime you are exempt from it. Can't confirm that, though. Your best bet is to try logging in and see if it works.
Damn, there's a lot more servers than the last time I looked at this a couple of years ago.
Damn, there's a lot more servers than the last time I looked at this a couple of years ago.
Yeah, that "Travel Map" is out of date. Affliction is no longer premium only and a new Freedom server "Celebration" has been added.
Holy crap this actually came back?
Did this game ever become less shitty and grindy I really love the idea of a sandbox MMO but I can't get past that.
Did this game ever become less shitty and grindy I really love the idea of a sandbox MMO but I can't get past that.
Depends. On one hand, there's still a huge grind you need to overcome to be able to make some things. On the other, making things that have a really low success rate (e.g. longswords, sickles, etc) is much more bearable because you don't lose nearly as many materials when you fail. For example, before when you failed on a longsword blade, you'd end up losing all the lumps that you'd need to make it. Now you use up maybe a tenth of that at most. Plus, when combining the blade and the handle, you don't lose everything if you fail. They just get damaged now. Longswords and sickles are much, much easier to make.

Although I disagree with the whole concept of craft chances. Are there still massive skill restrictions on things like terrain forming?
Thank god. Although I disagree with the whole concept of craft chances. Are there still massive skill restrictions on things like terrain forming?
Sadly, yes, but I never really needed to dig slopes larger than 20 myself. Honestly, just find a flat area and dig and drop it for maybe 2 or 3 minutes and you should be good for digging on most slopes. It's a bit of a grind, yes, but not too bad.
I might just create a new account, since I suppose it doesn't matter what account I'm using if we're playing on Epic. Playing on freedom at the moment with a friend. He is building a cog and then we're going to sail to Chaos and see what that's like.
Did this game ever become less shitty and grindy I really love the idea of a sandbox MMO but I can't get past that.
It's much less grindy on Epic due to the higher skillgain. Aswell as that there's a "curve", so your skills are more effective. E.g. at 45 mining, you can mine 70ql ore.
In the tutorial area, I got stuck in a wall, insulted a shovel, fed a campfire with an entire tree, pushed the well to the completely wrong place, and bit myself to death. I think I'm going to like this game. edit: also I saw mattyyyy and lijitsu

Don't worry, arachnophobes, they no longer use that model for the spider anymore. [img_thumb]http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3079/wurm201207051334.jpg[/img_thumb] This is the new one.
I'm currently near blhome spawn, and I've noticed a few players building a village on a nearby mountain to the west. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/h5dYG.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/VL8MQ.jpg[/thumb] Our first victims?
edit: also I saw mattyyyy and lijitsu
Wait, were you the guy who said 'hi' in local in the tutorial? Or the one who was constantly using emotes? I largely ignore other players in games like this. I got through the tutorial, went to Freedom and got eaten by a mountain lion because I didn't know how to equip items. Then I respawned and got eaten by a mountain lion again. Then I finally figured out how to equip a sword, but got the shield wrong so I was almost killed by a mountain lion again. Then I finally figured it out while digging myself out an area to try and get to a rock layer, and was promptly murdered by a troll. Then I quit. I'm not normally one for PvP servers, but I like games like this and it looks like the only way to go about this shit is to play with the Facepunch crowd. Just don't expect me to be worth half a fuck in combat.
Wait, were you the guy who said 'hi' in local in the tutorial? Or the one who was constantly using emotes? I largely ignore other players in games like this.
Neither. That guy who was farting all the time was annoying.
Just entered the world in our deed. Right next to a starving black bear. With 1.03 FS. Welp.
