So obviously because you're in this subforum, you must like Valve, right? Why not like the music in their games as well, especially in the Half-Life series? I, for one, fucking adore the sountrack. Ranging all the way from Half-Life 1 to Episode Two, the entire soundtrack has been on my MP3 player for years and I've never even thought of removing any of the songs. They're just outright amazing and offer good background themes for any situation, were it just chilling on a cliff looking at a beautiful landscape or training on the gym, pounding a punchbag 1000 mph. The music in the HL series is composed by Kelly Bailey which, in my humble opinion is by far one of the best composers in the whole of game industry if not the best.
Now, the sad news is that Bailey left Valve which is really depressing. His music was so kick-ass. I'd rather his soundtrack be in Ep3 rather than the Valve Orchestra, which is a pretty decent band also.
Here's a short interview from him about HL1 Beta, shows how modest he is :3:

Yes, yes, YES.
Half-Life 1 and 2's soundtrack beats by a metric fuckton of miles any of the Episodes' or any other Valve games (and that's saying something considering these are already very good)
The Half Life series had some of the best music around for FPS.
Wait what did Kelly leave Valve?
Fuck no. :smith:

His work was every game except the L4D series, TeamFortress series, and Portal series (he did most of EP2's sounds, not all though). So your saying his old work is better than his new work.
On another note, he left Valve to pursue his musical career (as in a band). He had been planning this for years before he left, he told Valve and they got him a protégé to get a successor to him. The result was the sound designer for (some of) TF2's music, L4D's music, (some of) EP2's music, and Portals music. He began making Portals music first (yes he created 'Still Alive' by himself) alone. He then was directed to work with Bailey with the rest of his projects until he left.
TBH I think that Bailey, while better at sound design, could not have done Portals music. It wasn't his style, the game would not have felt the same if he did it.

Like a year-or-two ago.
Half-Life's soundtrack was the best.
I mean come on:

Also I think his music for Episode Two was better than Half-Life 2's soundtrack, by a long shot.
'Vortal Combat' and 'Last Legs' being prime examples of that:

'Still Alive' was written and composed by Jonathan Coulton, not Kelly. Or Mike, for that matter.
I love Half-Life's, Opposing Force's, and Episode Two's soundtracks the most.
Half-Life's OST really changes the pace I play the game, making it really useful at some points.
Opposing Force sets a great mood with it's soundtrack.
Episode Two's soundtrack is really nicely done, the music even fits well outside of the game.
It's not like Kelly Bailey was the only music man at Valve. TF2 and L4D have amazing soundtracks.
Someone said Kelly Bailey was hot. I thought he was a female, so I looked 'her' up.
Yeah, TF2 has great music.
Yeah, TF2 has great music.
... by Mike Morasky. :v:
Mike Moriasky is pretty good too. He composed the Potato ARG theme if I am not mistaken.

Just a question from the OP. He left Valve, but is he still connected to the Valve orchestra?
He's also the face of Gordon Freeman

Not that I know. Maybe you should email Robin or Gabe and ask them about him? For some reason they never answer me.
He left; he's not 'connected' to the 'Valve Orchestra'.
There is no 'Valve Orchestra', most of the music (in the Half-Life series at least) is composed electronically, with the exception of the ocassional electric guitar and the percussion instruments.

Woah woah , I think someone is exaggerating a bit. HL1 & 2's soundtrack where pretty good , but by far from the best.
Halo probably had the best/memorable soundtrack.
I know I'm gonna get a fuckload of Valve fanboys rating me disagree/dumb (I don't even own a 360) but I don't think there's a single memorable Half Life/Portal song other than Still Alive. The TF2 ones are really good though.
He made pretty great and unique music. I wouldn't call him the best composer ever, but he's certainly part of the top.

Also I remember hearing a song in a game called City of Heroes that sounded like a ripoff of Bailey's "Drums and Riffs"(Such a Creative Title! :v:)

The only Halo song I can really remember is the main theme. This might be because I'm not a huge Halo fan, and haven't played it enough, But I can remember almost all of the songs from Half-Life, that one song That plays in Portal when you're about to be killed before the boss battle. (I forget what It's called though, Someone, Enlighten me.)
Lost my files, can anyone tell me how to extract these songs from the game again? :downs:

I agree, if there's one thing I loved about Halo was their use of the music (Marty O'Donnell is boss), specially in the first one, where it was used more wisely, and it had a shitload of musical styles combined too, which was awesome. But in my opinion the music became much more mainstream and generic in it's sequels or just remixes of songs from the first game.
[editline]10th April 2011[/editline]
However my favourite game soundtrack would be Dark Void, I haven't played the game but I bought the soundtrack album because I heard it was composed by Bear McCreary so expected it to be amazing, and I wasn't disappointed.

I said the protege made Portals music, not Kelly. Learn to read.
The "protege" I guess you speak of is Mike Morasky, and Kelly Bailey actually did do some of Portal's soundtrack. And again, Coulton did Still Alive, not one of Valve's in-house composers.
Well I look forward to hear his future work, even if I don't discover it in the next Half-Life instalment.

Well, I missed the "Still Alive" part, but yes Mike is the protege. But where did you hear about Kelly making ANY of Portals music? I met Mike at E3 once, he said Kelly had nothing to do with Portal.
