The game focuses on the troops of Delta Squad as they wield a desperate, last-ditch attempt to save the remaining human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless and seemingly unstoppable subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. The player assumes the role of Marcus Fenix (but can also play as Dominic Santiago), a former prisoner and war-hardened soldier.
The game is based on the use of cover and strategic fire for the player to advance through the scenarios; a second player can play cooperatively through the main campaign to assist.
The game also features several online multiplayer game modes for up to eight players.

Multiplayer Gears of War features up to four-on-four competitive gameplay, with teams representing the Gears or the Locust. Players must execute downed foes, otherwise these will revive after a time. In Assassination matches, the team's leader is the only one that can track the other team's leader and pick up new weapons, after which teammates can pick them up, with the goal to eliminate the foe's leader.
An Xbox 360 patch added the "Annex" mode, which is similar to King of the Hill, in which players must try to control a shifting control point for a certain amount of time to win.
The PC version of Gears introduced "King of the Hill", a mode not present in the Xbox 360 version, which uses a fixed control point but varies the conditions on which it is controlled.

Gears of War 2 features an upgraded multiplayer mode that allows up to ten users to simultaneously play in teams of five-on-five. The game features most of the multiplayer modes, including Execution, Warzone, Annex and King of the Hill, and adds in three new modes: Guardian, Wingman and Submission.
Guardian is a modified version of Assassination from the original Gears of War, but allows players to continue fighting after the leader has been killed, but losing the ability to respawn.
Wingman splits all ten players into five teams of two, where both members of a team play as the same character.
Submission, formerly known as Meat Flag, is a version of capture the flag in which players attempt to "down" an enemy controlled by the game's AI and move its body to their team's base or objective to earn points.

Another trend started by the Gears of War series, this time it began with Gears of War 2. Horde mode. The mode pits 5 players against waves of Locust, constantly increasing their ranks and, every 10 waves, boosting their "stats". This is quite possibly the most popular Gears of War 2 mode as at the time it was something fresh, not quite done before. Setting up a base with your buddies and trying to survive the onslaught was a truly marvelous sight.

Just like its predecessor, Gears of War 3 only seems to improve and fix what the previous game did wrong while keeping all the best parts.
The title features new additions to the series such as: extended executions, mantle kicking, trading weaponry, ribbon & medal system, redesigned UI to make it far more user friendly and mutators.
What are extended executions? Once you unlock them for a specific weapon you then get a choice of either tapping the Y button to do the classic GoW Curb Stomp or holding it to do a special extended one such as playing golf with your Gnasher shotgun!
Mantle kicking - super simple. You and your opponent are on both sides of a single piece of cover. Want to get the edge? Vault over, kick and stun him!
Trading weapons allows you to trade the currently held weapon with a teammate.
Mutators. Remember the fun Big Head Mode times? You can do that. Have a "laugh track" running while you kill Locust/COG-scum? Bang! Roadie run like a comet? You betchya and other fun mutators that either make the game harder, easier or just more fun.

Horde mode.
It's back and it's better than ever! As mentioned before, this was only polished up and became even better. Horde mode became a Horde-tower-defense Mode. Epic introduced Cash and with it - the ability to buy ammunition, fortifications, decoys, weapons and "Silverback" exo-skeleton suits. Even better - the bosses have been randomized and mutators are usable in the mode. Crazy stupid fun? Damn right!
Beast mode.
Gears of War 3 includes a mode called Beast. It is the opposite of Horde Mode. In Horde Mode, you are the COG combating the Locust, but in Beast, you are the Locust combating the COG. In Beast mode, you earn money for killing your enemies. Once you get enough money, you are able to upgrade your character to a specific class, such as Boomers, Corpsers and even Berserkers.
This mode is fast and brutal. You have but few minutes to get in there and wreck COG ass. What's that? You want more time? Well you better become a real Locust and start destroying the fortifactions! Roar! Show the world how big and scary you are!
The mode also features only 12 waves. That is a pity but don't fret! It's so challenging, especially on Insane, that you'll be stuck trying to win a single map for quite some time.
Leaderboard junkie? Go right ahead! Competing for the best time on a map is fun!

After playing a bit, I do like the new game mode.
Though when you have people on your team that don't understand the roles it leads to a quick steamroll of the COG team by the Locusts.
After playing a bit, I do like the new game mode.
Though when you have people on your team that don't understand the roles it leads to a quick steamroll of the COG team by the Locusts.
I love OverRun mode but I have 2 issues with it.
1- The fact that Grenadiers can spawn with lancers is a huge issue in my opinion, especially when it comes to defending the generator. Most times, I see teams spawn with 3 or 4 of them at a time, whether they're organized groups or not, I have no idea. They then proceed to sit behind cover and blindfire at the barricades and generator. I feel this is an issue because while they blindfire, they have a crosshair so they can aim extremely well and even though their hand, arm and back is exposed, you cannot damage them unless you go behind them or at least that's what's been happening to me, every time I try to get a shot off at their hands, no damage at all. They literally sit back and blindfire and frag the generator the whole time. Don't get me wrong, They should be able to damage barricades and generators with their weapons and especially the frags but.. I don't know. Possibly have their lancer do less damage to the barricades and generator? Maybe I'm too fixated on the idea that they seem like they're supposed to be used to fight the CoG while the tickers work away at the barricades.
2 - So far, playing as the CoG, there are no limits as to how many of each class you can have on a team. Want to roll with 5 bairds? You can do it! Unfortunately, this tends to lead to the CoG team having 10 additional players due to the turrets which do quite a bit of damage on their own. This is especially annoying in the first section for the Locust because if there's at least 2 Bairds on each side, that means you have to worry about them, along with the turrets, leading to double the trouble. Another issue I've noticed some of my friends having and people on other forums talking about is that some times, there's absolutely no one playing various roles, no soldiers, sometimes no medics. I understand that people should be allowed to selected whatever class they want but call me crazy, I kind of wish that they limited the classes to only 2 people using them. For example, instead of everyone rolling a Baird, only 2 people are able to, same with the other classes. As much as it forces people to do something they might not want to do, it could end better for team in general so you don't have to worry as much about running out of ammo and having no medic. I only bring those two up because from what I've seen thus far, Baird and Garron seem to be the more popular choices.
Other than those, it's amazing.
My main problem seems to be ammo for the team, no one seems to go Soldier and we mostly have Snipers because people just love snipers.
My main problem seems to be ammo for the team, no one seems to go Soldier and we mostly have Snipers because people just love snipers.
Yet another reason they shouldn't allow more than two of the same class.
Negativity aside, I really am loving the game.
Especially when playing as Baird (a bit ironic since I was complaining about him)
So many times I've just sat behind cover repairing the barricade, then when I reload my repair tool, a Locust shoots and damage the barricade. Then while he reloads I repair it back up. I don't know why but I love it when that happens, it's just too funny, sort of reminds of old school cartoons.
Cole is fun as heck too, but I can thank the Booshka for all the fun for playing as Cole.
Having a grenade launcher that bounces off surfaces is amazing, especially when two or more Locust are hiding behind some cover. Shoot above the wall and the grenades will bounce down behind them.. BOOM! They didn't even see it coming! Oh and the fact that the grenade launcher shots explode on impact, talk about a force to be reckoned with! Grub trying to run up to ya? BAM! Stopped dead in their tracks.
The ticker is just too amazing.
Want to surprise an enemy? Ticker dash past them and explode behind them!
Want to surprise an enemy? Again?! Run into the Ticker tunnels and surprise them from the side!
Want a bit more bang for your buck? Eat a grenade, get a bigger explosion!
Stuck behind cover with a turret watching you? Get a buddy to punt you over cover so you can explode over the enemies!
And then there's the Mauler..
Putting your shield up so teammates can use you as walking cover has never felt so badass.
Putting your shield up and having it rotate to deflect turret and enemy bullets and grenades back at them is just too satisfying.
Better yet, want to really surprise your enemy? Put up your shield and cause a huge distraction, then while everyone is focused on you, have a teammate playing as the Rager pop some head. They'll never see it coming and they'll never get away alive. They either go after the sniper, in which case you crush them from behind or, they go after you and before they know it, they've got the biggest headache ever.
God, I could go on and on about this "demo" just too much fun!
After playing for the past couple days I have to say I feel Overrun needs some serious balancing.
It just feels way too easy for the Locust, and winning as COG is probably a 1 in 5 games thing.
I didn't want to be excited for Judgement but damn it all the new stuff just looks so right

Here's a better review.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh8ZXpKrNZs[/hd]
So basically the singleplayer is rather weak, but the multiplayer is still well designed.
I really hope that the singleplayer campaign will be largely improved over Gears 3. Gears 1 and 2 had amazing campaigns with really good pacing and nice dialogues, I enjoyed the scenery and fights. The maps were also pretty varied and enjoyable.
Gears 3 had just such a bad singleplayer campaign, the level design is just horrible. The game is so linear and restricted, nearly every path is blocked by some obvious obstacle. In the prequels you had at least some freedom and could flank your enemies or find alternative routes. In Gears 3 everything is a corridor, even if you are in the open. Often it's just a small arena with absolutely unnatural looking cover. The accessible areas are just to small. Furthermore the parts where you have to split up are absolutely useless, not even after one minute you are already regrouped. In the other gears you had to actively work together to overcome that passage.
The next thing that was so annoying is the amount of enemies that the game throws at you, it's just insane. The pacing of the game is so horrible and you will only be shooting the whole time, without any pause where you could listen to the dialogs or watch the landscape. Furthermore the constant waves of enemies are annoying due to the bad map design, it's not really about flanking but just wasting bullets in them because the maps don't allow much mobility. Besides the Lambent are a really annoying enemy type, they are not that fun to fight and they are outright boring. It's no fun shooting them, you cannot execute them or chainsaw them properly. I also hope that they reduced the Micheal Bay style, it was just over the top, Gears 3 is like a bad movie.
Gears 1 and 2 made more sense and had quite some atmospheric moments, especially the Kyrill chapter in Gears 1. Everything fit so well together. Gears 3 is a disgrace.
Although after reading this thread, the singleplayer seems weak. I don't play that much multiplayer except Horde with some buddies, which was always just great fun. I hope they expand the horde mode.

Well Overrun is kind of like horde mode, except both COG and Locust are human players.
That's not to exciting for me, I usually play with one or two buddies in splitscreen or via the Xbox link.
After playing for the past couple days I have to say I feel Overrun needs some serious balancing.
It just feels way too easy for the Locust, and winning as COG is probably a 1 in 5 games thing.
According to the devs, you're supposed to lose as the CoG in OverRun.
I don't play that much multiplayer except Horde with some buddies, which was always just great fun. I hope they expand the horde mode.
They have a mode called "survival" which is their take on Horde.
I got judgement. :>
So, I'm not really liking the removal of DBNO.
Are they going to add it back in a game mode down the line?
Like an Execution playlist or something?
I really miss all the executions on DBNO players.
They removed DBNO? Why the fuck? I suppose it keeps players from "t-bagging", making you get back up and then t-bagging you some more.

I guess it's to help stop kill stealing, but I never had a problem with it.
Oh yeah, I also don't like that the Versus is COG vs. COG. I don't see why they wouldn't do Locust vs COG like always.

Only in Survival/Overrun mode.
Versus/FFA/Domination is just COG vs COG.
Not to mention the ridiculous looking ugly skins for players.
