I have always thought that singleplayer was missing something, because it's way too easy. The goal is to survive, which can be easily accomplished simply by making a hut of dirt on a mountain in 5 minutes and sitting there for eternity.
I got bored of singleplayer after i made a fort out of stone and collected a shitload of diamond and cooked meat, mainly because that's all there is to do. There's no goal, apart from "don't be a retard and get killed by NPCs/lava".
If i wanted to play a sandbox gamemode i'd play survival multiplayer since i'd at least have friends to build shit with. In singleplayer you're basically just in sandbox mode except you can be killed by NPCs.
It just feels uninspired. There needs to be some sort of way to "win". Preferably a difficult one. Like perhaps you have to collect 4 special rock types (one that is found in the nether, one that is found in a snow biome, one found underground, and one that is found underwater) and make a portal out of them. There are endless possibilities.
You're missing the point. It's SUPPOSED to be a singleplayer sandbox, with some elements of survival. If that isn't your cup of tea, then why don't you play multiplayer?
Theres not supposed to be any clear goal in survival, adventure mode will be for that.
Multiplayer is best.

I don't get why you'd want it to be a sandbox with a bunch of NPCs that can hurt you while you're trying to build.
I mean, imagine yourself trying to play GMod sandbox and build stuff while an endless wave of combine soldiers spawns and shoots at you. It would get fucking annoying after a while, right?
If there was a goal it wouldn't be a sandbox game that's the point. As I see it the point is to survive and thrive, starting off defenseless and working through the tiers of armour and tools in order to access the nether. But the game is as you make it and adding a precise mission would diminish the sense of freedom in it.

Well the goal i described could be implemented without making singleplayer have less freedom. It's not like you're forced to end the game, it's just an option if you're looking for a goal of some sort.
It wouldn't change singleplayer at all as far as some people are concerned.
I hope adventure mode is some sort of goal oriented game.
Why don't you come up with your own goals, or just downlaod some mods or play multplayer?
Why don't you come up with your own goals, or just downlaod some mods or play multplayer?
I already collected a shitload of stuff, built a badass fort and i am basically invincible. There is nothing interesting left to do.
If you need mods in order to make singleplayer fun then something is definitely missing, no?
I play multiplayer when i want to build stuff with friends. I was hoping singleplayer would bring something new to the table but i was wrong. It's a shitty watered down version of multiplayer, essentially.
Notch talked about a custom difficulty where you have to feed your characters I'm right? So it would be great for you... Also achievements + stats are going to add a little objective.
Edit :
And btw, if you're bored with SP, try some mods, there's tons of things to change the gameplay... new blocks/crafting recipes/mobs...
Here's a goal for you, drop everything you have and start again. Problem? You said there was nothing left to do, so restart and do everything again. Besides, you could set up a goal where you have to get to Bedrock only by finding caves and excavating DIRT only.

I'd be partial to agree if the items were there but giving them strong importance just seems unnecessary. Although I am rather excited as to the thought of how adventure mode will be.

If i have to continually put myself at a disadvantage just to give myself something to do then obviously singleplayer needs some more interesting things to do.

Adding new things to singleplayer wouldn't really change my opinion. So what if there's a new type of mob or a new stone for me to excavate? I still don't have anything to work towards once i've collected a handful.
1. Create a new world
2. Think of something to build - e.g. a rollercoaster
3. ????
4. Profit. You aren't bored in singleplayer.

You can do that in multiplayer and have more fun since you aren't alone with nobody to talk to.
My point is that singleplayer needs to be more than just a shitty version of multiplayer.
I prefer singleplayer erryday.
I think single-player might be disappointing to you because you lack the creativity required to play Minecraft on your own, you require others to think for you.
Well, most things get boring if you stay in one place. Go explore the world, visit the Nether, try and find cave systems that hit bedrock without digging.
Too name a few things you could do.
[editline]11th April 2011[/editline]
Christ, actually reading through the thread, you have no imagination whatsoever.
Then play multiplayer. Obviously singleplayer isn't your cup of tea, but plenty of people enjoy it.

Explain to me why i should make a big sculpture in singleplayer when i could do it in multiplayer.
In multiplayer, people actually SEE what i'm creating and can even partake in making it. In singleplayer, it doesn't even serve a purpose and nobody but me sees it. So why the fuck would i even bother?
This isn't a lack of imagination, it's a lack of reason to do anything. Multiplayer is literally an upgrade from singleplayer and anything you can do in singleplayer is likely more fun to do in multiplayer.
OP has no imagination and needs to stick to CoD
Wow, and someone told me this forum wasn't chock full of annoying fanboys who parrot the same stupid replies over and over.
I have plenty of imagination, i've built countless things in multiplayer. I'm saying there's no reason to make them in singleplayer because nobody gets to see what you've created, and building intricate sculptures is literally a waste of time since they serve no purpose as far as survival is concerned.
There's a reason it's called survival. You're supposed to try and survive. The problem is that it's retardedly easy to survive and there's no real challenge at all. If you have to continually trip yourself in the hopes that it makes the game harder then in my mind something needs to be changed.
If a game like CoD didn't have an objective would you tell the player to continually throw grenades at himself to give himself something to do? Because that's essentially the argument you are all using.

Why waste your time bitching on an internet forum about Minecraft Singleplayer, when you could be on Multiplayer, building things and having fun?
Because this is a forum where we can discuss the ins and outs of minecraft, which is precisely what i am doing...
What, you think we should all just not have an opinion about the game and never criticise it or give reasoning as to how it can be improved?
Multiplayer can be a laggy shitmess.
Multiplayer can be a laggy shitmess.
Agreed, but that's a whole other problem which has its own universe of discourse.
I just like singleplayer more, because, well.
1. You can't get oppinions by other players, build what you like.
2. You can always play through, no down-times or lag.
3. You aren't depending on a player, or server owner.

We are discussing it. People are offering suggestions to make SSP more fun for you, but you keep "Parroting" the same response of it being waste of time. Why not just try some suggestions and see if they work for you?
A fun goal for people who have only made castles is to learn how to reach The Nether without consulting the internet. Then build a settlement there and harvest nether materials and sulfur.
Hardmode is doing it without a diamond pickaxe.
I don't get why you'd want it to be a sandbox with a bunch of NPCs that can hurt you while you're trying to build.
its called peaceful difficulty. Turn it on in options. No more hurtful mobs.
