Get hl1, its kinda cheap. Then download afraid of monsters directors cut. I freaked out... also sven coop has a conversion of it, so you can do coop with friends.

I was just about to say AoM. It's pretty scary.

All things considered, there are many, many maps out there that are just a bit decent enough to warrant a playthrough just by adding them to your HL2 and loading them up via console. And for every good one, there's about ten shite ones that make mappers want to cry.

in dayhard when you get to the hotel. its comedy but that part scared me a little. also dont run with full speed towards the pictures on the walls :C

Well Curse isn't that scary nor does it have action but it can be a bit scary sometimes. If not try dear esther, again no zombies but the tension can cause a bit of fear.

Flesh is awesome, its not a combat based game and there are moments (like with the axeman) that are really scary. Only bad thing is the monster models and animations aren't very good.

do i need hl1 to play hl1 mods? (i have cs and dod and some hl1 games)
