So I have pre-loaded the game on my laptop which, where I was at, has a much faster internet connection than at my house.
I figured once I downloaded it, I could just copy the files from /common and fire up and the pre-load on my desktop would be finished.
Thing is, it isn't. I see all the exact same files in the same places as they are on my laptop, but when I log in to Steam on the desktop, it is still saying Portal 2 has 9 GBs left to download.
Have pre-loads always been like this or am I oblivious to something?
just let it download. it will go really fast.
I have the same problem as Namjaa. Another problem, I have a very slow internet connection.
I'm having exactly the same problem. It's downloading from the beginning and it's not going any faster.
Right click on the game on your laptop(on your steam gamelist). Choose Backup game files.Cant believe no one uses this.
You can't backup the preload.
Actually I think the download is going around 3 times faster than the download speed so I guess it recognizes the copied files.
Copy the folder in common
(it might work because it did when I copied my steam folder when transferring stuff)
I found out how to fix this! Could someone with completed download upload their portal 2 common.ncf file? It keeps info about the downloaded files. If I replace it with the one that has been completed it should work. The file is located at <SteamFolder>\SteamApps folder. If someone could do that it I would be really grateful.
Make sure you copy the Portal 2 folder in the common directory along with the portal 2 .ncf files in your Steamapps. Then, restart Steam (not really necessary but chances are it'll be mroe likely to work) and tell Portal 2 to preload. It should instantly reach 100%.
I can confirm this method works as I have copied it between two computers in my house. I would upload the .ncf files as Frugle requested but I have gone over my monthly download quota this month and thus am capped at horrible speeds.

If you downloaded it on your laptop, just copy the ncf files from there.
I can't do that since I'm not at home. It's fine though because I think I can redownload it before it releases.
I got it from my friend's pc and it works fine.
