Ubisoft's reveloutionary (LOL) new DRM has been receiving a lot of media attention due to it's insane new concept of forcing players to be connected 100% to the internet and logged into ubi.com - failture to do so results in gameplay hitches like losing progress, pauses and other similiar things.
But I guess Ubisoft's concept wasn't as well thought out as they hoped because their debut DRM title Assasins Creed 2 was cracked within hours of the Russian copy being released.
DRM is killing the industry, not pirates.
UPDATE - Silent Hunter 5 (another UBISOFT title using the same DRM) has been cracked but this time its the English version!

No, pirates make companies feel the need to use DRMs.
No, pirates make companies feel the need to use DRMs.
Pirates will be there no matter what.
More people would buy games if they just fucked off with annoying and invasive DRM altogether and stuck with Game keys.
The industries fine.
PC Gaming is just the weakest of it's branches.
And it's Pirates who've made companies resort to DRM.
The fact that DRM only punishes paying customers has made the act of thievery, (Which it is, no matter how you dress it up), seem morally right.
Having to download a cracked version to play a game you own however, is fucking stupid.
Edit:
Fucking awful spelling and sentence structure.
Is their a link to prove that it's been cracked? not that I don't think it wouldn't be.
Is their a link to prove that it's been cracked? not that I don't think it wouldn't be.
The English version has NOT been cracked, solely Russian version. If you just look at some forums that relate to warez/torrents etc you'll be able to find it.
Don't want to link directly because then the mods will jump me.
Why WAS the Russian version released first anyways?
I feel like the PC market is being treated like one big contest among the video game publishing behemoths to solve piracy forever: whoever figures out how to do that without resorting to human sacrifice or satanic rituals would have everyone queuing up with endless praise and humongous amounts of money. The problem is that instead of researching the problem thoroughly, Ubisoft are just tacking it on to every halfway popular franchise in clubbing range. It's money in the bank either way.
Why WAS the Russian version released first anyways?
Russian government pays out the nose to get EVERYTHING first.
That includes space.
Why WAS the Russian version released first anyways?
I actually have no idea, but most games and movies make their way to Russia before any other country.

Steam have already won. Their DRM is pretty much perfect.
DRM is not the solution, it will always be cracked. Buyers only get a more open version by pirating, which is a huge pro-pirate incentive.
Neither Pirates nor DRM are killing the industry. Pirates threaten it a whole lot more than DRM does, though.
(I don't see how DRM will ever kill the industry, unless it requires fucking urine sample analysis to confirm you're the owner of the game before it allows you to run it. That'd just be weird shit at LAN parties.)

Fuck you, Steam, you made me double-post.
It was bound to happen.
One day they'll give up on DRM.
Steam have already won. Their DRM is pretty much perfect.
Soooooooo, sooooo true. I really don't get why some people see steamworks as a dealbreaker.
1. Your purchases are all in the one convenient location with easy updating
2. Many multiplayer games have integrated chat, friends list and achievements
3. A brilliant community integration simplifying tasks like clans/community groups
4. The client itself is very well optimized both in design (New UI) and speed (Not new UI.)

Then they'll watch as they get exactly the same amount of Pirated copies, and immediately invent some new ridiculous way to enforce anti-piracy.
The thing is, sometimes these piracy statistics are a load of bullshit. It's very hard to determine overall downloads from such little information and it doesn't factor in other things such as people who BOUGHT and DOWNLOADED the game...
Not all "pirates" are ruthless thieves you know...unless your Geoffery Rush.

Not in anyway, shape or form.
Valve/Steam games are cracked just as easily as any others.

Seeing as the fastest I can download is 10 kb/s, and due to where I live I can't upgrade my internet, it's impossible for me to buy things over Steam, but no, I don't mind them as a client-side DRM-... -thing.
Except when they force me to do 100+ megabyte patches for a singleplayer game - that just pisses me off.
(Think a hundred megs is easy to download? Do the math for downloading it at 10 kb/s.)

Good argument, but then digital distribution is basically out of the question for you and isn't also a majority of internet gaming?

Except it's 100x harder to crack, you'll never notice it while on steam, and you will be able to do near jack shit unless it's singleplayer.

Well of course, but I still support the thought that more people would download the game illegally if there was no protection on it.

Breakin' my automerge.
haha hilarious. didnt know that ac2 was out already. DRM -> growing piracy, growing piracy -> more DRM.
One thing that does piss me off is Pirates that preach because they're "Fighting the DRM war." You're not helping anyone by fighting DRM. In fact, there would be no DRM if not for you bastards.
Except it's 100x harder to crack, you'll never notice it while on steam, and you will be able to do near jack shit unless it's singleplayer.
It's close to impossible to play a pirated multi player game online (properly) if it has even the lowest level of DRM (Cd Key)

And second hand market. Which seems to be the REAL cause of DRM covered by their "dirty pirates" propaganda.
And second hand market. Which seems to be the REAL cause of DRM covered by their "dirty pirates" propaganda.
True, I suppose.
In reality, companies want our money, and people want to keep theirs. Always gonna be cheap bastards.
You don't need any kind of DRM but a Cd-Key for multiplayer game but there it doesn't matter what DRM you put on a singleplayer game, it WILL be cracked.
If i'll ever make a game i won't make any other DRM but a simple cd-key check, or release on Steam :P
Except it's 100x harder to crack, you'll never notice it while on steam, and you will be able to do near jack shit unless it's singleplayer.
No. It really isn't.
You can rarely play any Cracked Games online anyway.
I've seen Cracked Valve Games played online.
Just because this forum belongs the owner of GMOD does not mean that you have to delude yourself into thinking Valve and Steam are perfect when they clearly aren't.

Games in Battlefield 2's brand of CD-key checks annoyed me though.
Forgot which of my three bloody e-mails I signed up with almost immediately.
