• Portal 2 Preload Findings?
    114 replies, posted
Now that everyone has the time to pre-load Portal 2 has anyone made any nice findings in the GCF files. I remember when we had a look through the original Portal's GCF files we could access all the music. Which was sweet.
I wouldn't want to spoil anything though, so I'm going to keep away.
.VPK
.VPK?
It's the new format .VPK (like Left 4 Dead) not .GCF anymore.
All of it is encrypted. However, the titles of files are not. For instance, npc_sounds_zombie_aperture. These titles can give hints at what to expect.
You can talk about this in the Portal 2 Megathread.
You can talk about this in the Portal 2 Megathread.
I don't think those people would like Spoiler tags every other post.
.VPK
VPK sucks.
VPK sucks.
L4D and Alien Swarm VPK does suck. L4D2 has quite a few improvements that Im hoping to see in Portal 2.
VPK sucks.
The only differences between GCF and VPK I noticed is that VPK files can be opened without having to close Steam first and they can officially be created by everyone.

Heck, I have it open while I have the game itself open!
Has anyone considered putting the .bsp files into another source game, just to see what happens? I would do this, but I uninstalled all my other games to make room for portal 2, and I can't be bothered to install them. [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] Who cares if there are a bunch of missing textures.
So, I don't really know how this works, Valve probably encrypted it on several different layers and all...but wouldn't it be SOMEHOW possible to play the game already? Making Steam think, it's already the 19th, faking the confirmation from their servers... I know this is probably borderline piracy, I just thought it should technically be possible. I'm not sure if I'd want, though. I don't think I'll be checking out the files or anything yet, either.

I hope Portal 2 has some modability. I'd like to mod the co-op bots into the Daft Punk guys.
I hope Portal 2 has some modability. I'd like to mod the co-op bots into the Daft Punk guys.
It's Source. Of course it's moddable. Also, Hammer's getting updated specifically for Portal 2. So... There you go.
It's Source. Of course it's moddable.
It's VPK, might be kinda tricky.
It's got 63 solo maps. [editline]12th April 2011[/editline]
Portal: 18 maps (Not counting advanced and menu maps) Portal 2: 63 maps (Not counting multiplayer maps and e1912) Half-Life 2: 68 maps (Not counting intro, credits and menu maps) Portal 2 maps are also significantly bigger in size than Portal 1 maps.
Damn
I hope Portal 2 has some modability. I'd like to mod the co-op bots into the Daft Punk guys.
I give portal 2 one month before Peabody is replaced with an anime model.
It's Source. Of course it's moddable.
Source alone is not what allows modability, you can mod other engines too.
I found that they're still using files from CS:S maps :v: [editline]13th April 2011[/editline]
Source alone is not what allows modability, you can mod other engines too.
Well, but Source is targeted at modders which is what I think he means. Some games aren't mod friendly at all.
Valve is honestly my favorite game developer.
Source alone is not what allows modability, you can mod other engines too.
I think what he meant was that we'll get hammer and the SDK like with any other source game out there. Never before has there been a source game release (from valve anyway) that hasn't had the tools accompanied beside the game itself.
That's true.
