I don't own Half-Life 2 (though I did have it years ago, no idea what happened to it), but I do have Episode 1, and would like to play it with a few buddies on Synergy. However, because I don't own HL2, Synergy crashes itself as soon as it opens. Is there a way to play Episode 1 with Synergy without actually owning HL2?
Apparently there is a mount.cache file that controls what Synergy tries to load, maybe removing HL2 from that file will allow this. I don't have any experience with this however, it may rely too much on HL2 to work.
Worth a try at least though.
Note the file must be edited with Windows encoding (CRLF line ends etc) or Synergy will fail to load. Notepad works fine for this.

The non steam version of Synergy was so much fun, would have rather have fun synergy instead of the "focus on co-op" steam version.

I'll take the knock-off any day when it's got a great community, plenty of map variety, and better gameplay.
I don't think there's a way to play synergy without HL2. OC is better, because of all the content it has, but always get ridiculed for the playermodels people can install for them. At any rate, you're going to have to buy HL2 eventually.

I'm not following you. Do you dislike the mod due to thinking you have to download anime models, or the fact you think it's rip-off of Synergy?
Because both reasons are as false as can be.
You don't have to download anime models if you don't want to, that's why they're apart of playermodel packs that are completely optional. Secondly, Obsidian Conflict offers more than Synergy ever has, and ever will.
Even if Obsidian Conflict were a rip-off, that wouldn't stop it from being outrageously better.
I wish I wasn't such a cheap ass so I could gift you HL2.
It honestly shouldn't be too hard to find a free gifted copy of HL2, I know my friend just gave one away last night. Had extra from buying Orange Box.
Just get obsidian conflict, way way better than Synergy imo.
