I got Star Trek Online Retail Collectors edition for free and I was wondering if anyone still plays it? I was also wondering if anyone knows of a way to host private servers for STO like you can in other MMO's. Thanks in advance and if this is repost or something feel free to delete post.
From the stuff I've read on Champions Online forum (same dev studio so you hear a thing or two) it's pretty alive. Thing is though, the launch and the content at launch was pretty terrible. Everyone, including me, binned it and took bets how many weeks it would take for it to crash down and burn.
However, the dev team is pretty persistent and they've pressed on, releasing quite a few large updates and still doing that to this day. With the very recent release of The Foundry, people can make their own missions now, and feedback has been positive so far.
I'd say, give it a whirl. See if it's to your liking and ignore the naysayers and form your own opinion. The developers seem to be doing quite a good job making them game better, and the players stay around. So on that end yes, it's still alive.
I certainly enjoy the game, you could always try the trial and see if you enjoy the gameplay and the game itself.
Well I've played the game in beta and several times after that, but I was interested in knowing its overall population. Which clearly is more played that I thought. Can't wait till my copy comes in tomorrow.
I recall having a trial a friend had given me. It was sorta fun, and I liked the sense of exploration, but as an EVE player I was certainly not a fan of its depiction of space and overall how travelling in space worked. Mind you this was shortly after launch.
But the fact that you could hang out in your bud's ship and drop down to planets deep in space was pretty friggin' cool. Regardless, I found gameplay pretty generic MMO-wise.
nope

Clearly people still do because there are thousands of people still doing so.
I have a lifetime subscription, so I guess I 'technically' still play it.
I mainly played it during beta (since the start of it) and then some after, but I don't play that much anymore.
I might get on again and see how it is.
I tried the demo and loved it, but I just don't "do" subscription fees. Maybe it'll go F2P eventually like Champions... But hopefully without the over-the-top customization restrictions.
Anyone else got any opinions about the game?

You could always check the official forums.
What I do notice is that the devs do a lot for this game, like the soon to come Duty officers/assignments system.

Definetly, as the foundry opened up there's basically infinite ammount of missions and the game is updated regulary, and holy shit

These items are actively being worked on by the at this time by the development team.

[*]New Ground Combat v 2.0 - major update to weapons and a new over shoulder aim and shoot (optional) reticle system

basically turning ground part into 3rd person shooter.
It's shows they care about the game, all those updates are gonna improve an already great game, but my opinion is also based on the fact that I like Star Trek itself a lot.
