IMO, you'll wanna avoid high population servers. People there are usually meaner. I remember playing in Kel' thuzad
Fucking hated it, you would get ganked no matter where you went.
It doesn't matter what server you play on, some (if not most) of us choose a server our friends/someone we know are already playing on. Otherwise I guess you could do what Dashiel said.
Find one your friends or in game friends play on. You will want to pick also on the game play you like ie PVP, PVE, RP, and RPPVP. Keep in mind you can pvp on non pvp realms with your pvp turned on.
I always pick a server that has a name that I know, it just feels cool. I have played Warcraft since Warcraft II, and when I got WoW and saw the names, I thought it was very clever of them.
If you have an friends that ask them what realm they are on. If not you have to choose between PVP = player vs players where its more dangerous but more fun, PVE = where you can pick if you want to be attackable/attack the other fraction and RP = where people pretend they really are a wow character, not what your looking for. I would go for PVP as even though you get ganked its way more fun.
throw a dart at the screen and whichever it lands on, choose it
what would you say about pvprp?
i would say "lol"
Dont play the default (insert realm type here etc. pvp here) or your will be labeled as a failure. I play on Duskwood the default PvE server on the US and we're automatically labeled as one
Just join whatever server your friends are on. WoW is a social game, and if you are not on with your friends, you won't be having fun.

I had fun without knowing anyone that played. As long as you make friends ingame you're good.
Just go on your recommended one, or join one that you have friends that play on. How I did it anyway.

A short note on RP realms:
There is no difference in the game beside the people you're playing with.
Role Play realms collect people who want to - funnily enough - role play. You'll find that it is generally more mature people.
To anybody that plays on a roleplaying realm, do people know how to play their characters better because they get more into the game or are there just as many idiots as in normal servers, i know it can vary but there are so many people that dont bother to do anything that involves reading so they just suck.
Lightning's Blade.

I play on a rppvp server. Never seen anyone RP once. I've heard of one RP guild on my server but I've never seen em.
As the above person said I really have not saw one person role play on the rp server I'm on. Iv actually seen people made fun of for trying to role playing. Granted though Iv only a level 10 so I really haven't saw much.

It's I've.
Ideally you should be joining the one with your friends on it.

I didn't realize anyone would really care about it.
How do you get to know the horde/ally ratios.
I thought it was best to join high populated servers to make it easier to find people to do quests or raids?
Find one that says PvP and High population. If you're a masochist, pick one that says locked.
I would suggest a server than fluctuates between normal and high population. That way you have a very good population and you don't have to worry about it filling up so you have to wait in line.
avoid RP. there may be mature people but every time i've played on one it's just creepy
