• Cartridges Vs. Discs

Most of us here grew up shoving cartridges into our ol' NES/SNES/N64 or any other cartridge-based system. Some others, were born too late in the '90s or were a '00 baby. Sucks. Cartridges [img_thumb]http://www.gamersace.com/images/GoldenEye-N64-Cartridge.jpg[/img_thumb] Goldeneye is still one of my favorite shooters. /nostalgia Anyway, cartridges. What's so great about them? -Easily Stackable -They are easy to store in boxes -They are sturdy, they will not break unless you're a pig or you abuse your games -They are easy to cleanup, as if they make a mess anyway -[Opinionated]They are very reminiscent of the '90s (Retro-feel) What's so bad about them? -They do not handle liquids very well -Some find that they lack individuality and are ugly -Some find that they are bulky -If the label gets ripped off, you have to play it to figure out what game it is -If someone falls on the console, you're screwed -Costly Who would rip the label off anyway? So that's it on cartridges. And now here's discs. I can safely say that every member of facepunch is familiar with game discs. Discs [img_thumb]http://img.ehow.com/article-page-main/ehow/images/a05/7q/3d/fix-cracked-xbox-disc-800X800.jpg[/img_thumb] What's so great about them? -The artwork can be more elaborate than with cartridges -They handle liquids fairly well -Easy storage -Many consider discs to be more stylish What's so bad about them? -Very easily breakable -Once again, if you knock over the console you're screwed(Mainly Xbox) -You can't leave them out in the open -Does not last long out of box -Noisy -Breaks and chips easily if dropped -You have to be especially careful not to break them -Somewhat difficult to handle What side are you on?
Cartridges can't hold memory for shit.
Discs inside cartridges. God tier.
This?
Cartridges can't hold memory for shit.
I guess, but I still don't think we should've abandoned the technology, I'm sure we could have improved it to suit our needs.
the NPG will handle propriety cartridges, and the games on that look awesome
cartridges are fucking expensive to make and bulky as hell, and the speed of your removable medium counts for precisely shit all when it's installed on the hard disk, which any self respecting platform (PC) does by default I can appreciate their use in handhelds however.
I fucking love the feeling of popping a Super Mario All-Stars or Donkey Kong Country cartridge in my SNES for a few hours of nostalgic fun. Cartridges > Discs
Cartridges can't hold memory for shit.
This anyone who thinks Cartridges are better are idiots. They where good for the time we had them, but discs are WAY better. While I love my N64 or my Genesis, I prefer what DVDs and Blu-rays can bring me now.
unless you use a console, disks are only out once in a blue moon
Disks are way better are you kidding me. Only reason anyone here would disagree is for nostalgic feel.
I remember the sound of putting cartridges into your N64. Lovely. I prefer Discs, since you can store things.
I remember the sound of putting cartridges into your N64. Lovely. I prefer Discs, since you can store things.
Yeah I voted cartridges just because of that thought
Ok, I get the nostalgia of the cartridges, but comparing them to disks now? Seriously? EDIT:
1-Very easily breakable 2-Once again, if you knock over the console you're screwed(Mainly Xbox) 3-You can't leave them out in the open 4-Does not last long out of box 5-Noisy 6-Breaks and chips easily if dropped 7-You have to be especially careful not to break them 8-Somewhat difficult to handle
1,2,3,4 and 7 seem to be all just one and well.. Be careful with your stuff, if you gonna throw them around, fall over and knock shit down you shouldn't have a console in the first place 6 Disks aren't made of glass, they don't just break and shatter if they fall 8 What?
I like the cartridges design wise (probably because of Game Boy nostalgia), how they click and for how durable they are. If something's wrong with it you don't have to worry a wrong scratch ruined everything, most of the time you just have to blow away some dust and that's it. It's like with many old devices in general, there's that famous example of a Game Boy that survived a bombing or something. At least from my personal experience I can say they're more durable and insensitive than disks. CDs have more storage capacity however, but I have a feeling both devices will eventually be replaced by either USB sticks or flash memory or by clouds/online storage services like Dropbox. But you never know what (new and exciting technology) the future might bring, right?
Also, cartridges have an internal battery. If that dies, then the game is unplayable until you open the cartridge and replace the battery.
Also, cartridges have an internal battery. If that dies, then the game is unplayable until you open the cartridge and replace the battery.
Interesting Never knew this
However, cartridges do allow for smaller and thinner devices.
Also, cartridges have an internal battery. If that dies, then the game is unplayable until you open the cartridge and replace the battery.
With most games you can still play, you just can't save your game anymore. Well, you can save all you want actually, but no data will actually be stored. At least, that's what it was like with Pokemon Red for my gameboy
Also, cartridges have an internal battery. I agree with most people here, disks are better in every way except for reminding me of the early 90s.
Disks. I get nostalgia from Cartridges but i prefer to live with the present time and move forward.
Cartridges were cool because some had their own processors inside them, like the game Star Fox. It was used to draw more complex graphics. I mean imagine a freaking graphics card mounted on a disc. Now that's God tier.
Would you rather have a cartridge that has the same capabilities as a disc but is just a different model?
Cartridges are more expensive than discs, put that as a negative.
Cartridges are more expensive than discs, put that as a negative.
Alright.
Would you rather have a cartridge that has the same capabilities as a disc but is just a different model?
Nope.
Nope.
Why not?
I remember the sound of putting cartridges into your N64. Lovely. I prefer Discs, since you can store things.
Unless you grew up with Playstation. [editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
Why not?
Cause its bulky god damn cartridge and only fits one system. its not like CDs which have a universal size and everything. I can put my PS2 Games in my PC's disk drive and play them on a PS2 emulator, that's just awesome.
Only thing I dislike about discs Is when people handle mine and grab them and place their fingers everywhere and not hold the proper way :ohdear:
Why not?
Because the only properly worse thing I can come up with about CDs, when compared to cartridges, is that they can get damaged somewhat easily. But I'm not clumsy. Every single CD I have ever owned, be it a game, a movie or music, still works.
You should have faster load times as a pro on cartridges, seeing how they don't have to spin up or anything. I remember the psp having terrible load times because of that.
