So, i'm sitting here, thinking about the different careers I could take in life, and one choice stands out. I think that I would love a career in video games. I don't know what type, journalism, making them, testing them, you know, but still, it would be great. I wondered if anyone here on Facepunch ever considered this, is going into this, or knows someone who is. Also, if you know any great colleges for it, let me know, I heard something about Texas, but I forget where.
Indeed having a career in video games would be extremely fun & interresting. Hope I get to work as game tester :smug:
Every child thinks of that, then you realise your in the real world and that getting into a career like that is not as easy as you may think.
Police > Game tester any day.

Enjoys slamming a car into every wall in Need 4 Speed 30. It's not just playing games before they're released.

Yeah, I know that. I usually look for glitches everywhere in most games anyway, so I still think it'd be fun.

And so everyone gives up automatically, which is why no one makes any more games.
Bravo, good logic.

I'd rather try and have a job I enjoy, rather than taking a shitty office job, and trying only to get to the weekend without offing myself, and watching TV seeing the guy who just went postal, saying "When do I get to do that?"

I didn't mean it the way everyone gives up, but you gotta have dedication and actual skill to get into that career.

Yeah I said that to myself when I was like "Ooh a career in IT will be fun"
Then I realised it would be boring as shit.

...Most every specialized career requires hard work. The only reason some may seem easier/more entertaining than others for you is because you possess some natural prowess at a skill that job favors.

Opinions, there's those who enjoy making models, level design, animating, scripting etc.

Yeah which is what I was getting at kinda, if he seriously wants to get into it he will need to know shit before hand, like modeling etc. would be a good start.
I don't know if he has or not, just saying, if he is picking it because he thinks it will be easy and cool just playing games all day then he's got another thing coming.
But on the flipside if he does posses some skill that will get him there then power to him, I hope he does and can bring some nice elements to future games.

Ah I meant office it, not like design work. I would love to be a modeler or level designer but never bothered to learn and don't have the time or patience any more to do so.

Yeah... I can see that you enjoy these thing but personally I'd never want to spend the my hole life doing this.

Meh, I guess, but is there actually ANYTHING you would like to do your WHOLE life? Sure, it may be fun for a while, maybe even for really long, but eventually, you'll grow bored of it, no matter what it is.
You want to work in the game industry? Alright. First off, most "game designer" degrees are bullshit, you don't need those. Take programming and shit (actual programming, not "in this class we learn how to print HELLO WORLD in Java).
What do you want to be? Graphics artist? Concept artist? Modeler? Writer? Coder? Level designer? You will not be a team leader, and you won't be able to make your dream game. Accept it now.
Start small. Make a shitty game in game maker and do not release it. Play around in level editors, try 3D modeling, try writing a small and easy game engine. Learn C++ and other useful languages. Try innovating.
Would you be ready to move halfway across the country or even on another continent for a job? Chances are that there's no game studio that's hiring in your home town.
Most studios value experience, and that is usually gained by mod-making.
someone else finish this post
If you have a short attention span, you can forget about your video game career.

Game testing is not a full-time job, they're always hired by the studio from outside. Most testing is done by the studio itself.
I'm considering going to this nearby media college for Game Art Design and animation. No game programming.

Programming is boring as shit unless you enjoy it. Its like trying to write a university thesis and you dont have spellcheck.
Game testing would be an utterly horrible job. Apparently the pay isn't that good and the sheer amount of times you'd have to trawl through every single possible part of sections of probably shitty games to make sure touching models in some odd angle on one part of a level doesn't corrupt the graphics for the entire game until it's restarted...
I'd suck the fun from gaming, having it as a job would make you want to never play games again at home.
Anyway, do what other people have said about learning how to program properly in C++ and the such and try other aspects. Hey, maybe at the end of years of practise and toiling at shitty mods you'll be hired by a little developer and release the culmination of your work in a decade's time; a tie-in for a children's TV series in Argentina.

You're making my future seem bleak :saddowns:
My goal is to become a 3D artist, preferably for a game developer.

Like it's for every other thing.
Everyone wants to work in the Ep3 devision at valve, because with all these fat jokes, you'll be sitting on your ass for the rest of your life, not lifting a single finger.
you will not get a job as a game tester unless you are a intern. Those positions are held for recent Game Art,Animation,or Programming grads looking to get there name on their first project.
I am a Animation Major my minor is VFX and when I go back for my masters it will either be for Film or Game Art. So if you do go into games get a degree that is versatile. An if you cant do art you may be surprised if you at least tried 3d modeling.
Oh yeah and this industry is all about who you know and how good can you network. I have plenty of asscioates that freelance for game devs, film studios, and etc and so on and so on so find out what you like and can understand eat and breath it and start networking and researching( cghub.com deviantart.com cgtalk.com conceptart.org) these are my top favorite places to do some studies, chat and get the latest news.

I was kidding about that.

Stop rating me dumb.
I know someone who is a game tester and that's all they do. I agree though, it would be boring after a short amount of time.
I was considering maybe something in game design but I've decided to go with something in Graphic Design since I think I would enjoy it more.
