NOTE: While Wii Softmodding can be used for emulation and roms, I will not provide any links to them, seeing as they are agains facepunch rules.
It is wise to disable WiiConnect24(Auto updating) because if it updates it will remove your homebrew.
Apparently hackmii doesn't work on 4.3 yet. If you updated, download an elf/dol file you want to use, name it boot and put it in the root of the sd card, then run smash stack/indiana pwns.

Why do softmodding?
Because it's awesome, thats what. You can do so many things with it. Heres a couple examples:
-Web/FTP servers
-Play Quake and Doom
-Play Quake online (only in some cases)
-Play various homebrew games
-Mix your own music
-Media center
And a lot more
K, great. Now how do I do this shit?
Well, depending on your system menu version, you will have to use different software. However, you will always need 3 basic things:
-A wii
-A computer that can read sd cards.
-A wii compatible sd card.
Ways of loading homebrew:
Hombrew channel: easiest way, but you have to install this with one of the other methods.
Twilight hack: First kind of homebrew loading that came out. Exploited in a bug in the Twilight princess savefile to load homebrew. Doesn't work anymore.
Bannerbomb: The simplest method in the book. Exploits a malformed banner in the system menu to load homebrew. Only usuable in 4.2 and lower.
Smash Stack: Exploits a custom stage bug in Super Smash Bros Brawl. Works on everything.
Indiana pwns: Savegame bug in some kind of lego indiana jones game. Still Works.
How to find your system menu version (and what to do with that)
Turn on your wii and go to system options. In the top right corner there will be 2 numbers and a letter, like X.XX, eg. 3.4U
3.0 to 4.0:
Use Bannerbomb v1
4.2
Use Bannerbomb v2
4.3
Smash Stack or Indiana pwns
Setting it up.
This applies to all methods.
1. Take your sd card and put it in your computer. Right click on it in your computer, and click format. Make sure it says FAT, and press ok. When it's done go to the next step.
2. Download http://bootmii.org/download
Unzip it onto your desktop. Copy the boot.elf (it might be boot.dol) onto your sd card. (DONT MAKE ANY SUBFOLDERS!)
For 3.0 to 4.0
Download http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/aads/aad1f_v108.zip
Unzip onto desktop, copy the private folder onto the sd card.
Now, boot up your wii, without the sd card in it.
Go to the save data menu, sd card, channels.
Insert the sd card.
A dialouge will come up saying, 'Load boot.dol/elf?' Click yes, and scroll down to the installing hackmii section.
4.2
Download http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/abds/abd6a_v200.zip, unzip and put the private folder on your sd card.
Now, boot up your wii, without the sd card in it.
Go to the save data menu, sd card, channels.
Insert the sd card.
A dialouge will come up saying, 'Load boot.dol/elf?' Click yes, and scroll down to the installing hackmii section.
Smash Stack
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Smash_Stack Follow the tutorial there, for the elf file grab boot.elf from the first link and put it in the root of the sd card.
Indiana pwns.
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Indiana_Pwns Follow the tutorial there, for the elf file grab boot.elf from the first link and put it in the root of the sd card.
Installing HackMii
So now you are at a menu that looks like this:

Press a to continue. If it says unable to install you have a problem. You can live without bootmii, and probably dvdx but the Homebrew Channel is pretty much essential.
Now, scroll up to install homebrew channel and press a. Wait till it is done, and scroll down to DVDX and do the same thing.
When that is done, go to 'Bootmii..'. Try to install it as boot2 first, but if it doesn't work try to install it as IOS. Once you are done, exit out and turn off your console. Now go make a backup (read below on how to unbrick your wii)
Getting some homebrew (NOTE: THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE WIFI ACCESS)
Now you may have noticed that you don't have any homebrew yet.
Of course, you could just scroll through a homebrew listing and dl whatever you want, but that's boring. You can just use the homebrew browser.
To install that, create a folder on your sd card called apps. Now, download http://www.codemii.com/wiihomebrew/homebrew_browser_v0.3.8.zip Unzip it onto your desktop, and copy the homebrew_browser into your apps folder.
Insert your sd card into your wii and power it up. You should come to the BootMii menu. Just press reset to boot into the wii menu.
Launch up as normal, and go to the homebrew channel. Select Homebrew browser, and it should be self explanitory from then on. To get back to the homebrew channel press home and then back to loader.
Good homebrew(From the hombrew brower)
-Any kind of Quake
-Doom
-Wiihttpd (web server)
-WiiXplorer (sd card manager and ftp server)
-WiiMC(media center)
-Gecko OS (cheats)
-Riivolution (Game modding)
-List of apps that don't work/crappy:
-WiiConnect
How to format your wii
UNTESTED
Go to your system settings. On the last page press Format Wii(or something that says format) and go through the menus. You probably dont have to format 3 times.
Ways to unbrick your wii(NEEDS BOOTMII INSTALLED(hopefully as boot2))
With a clean wii, start up your wii. Press the power button until you get to the cogs, and then reset on the one with the powerbutton going to the SD card. This will make a backup of you NAND flash memory.
(Needs access to bootmii) To unbrick: Go to settings(the cogs) and then go to the arrow pointing away from the SD card. Follow the prompts to restore your flash memory. Should take about 3 minutes.
Troublshooting
Q:My homebrew channel is upside down.
A:Reinstall using Hackmii
Q:I get a black box on my screen with some code in it.
A:Unplug power cable and plug back in. (If it happens during installation of something reinstall, if it happens during installing bootmii and you can't boot up properly, take out your sd card. If it still doesn't work you will have to format, I will post a guide on that tomorrow.)
Happy softmodding!
There is a doom app? :sigh:
There is a doom app? :sigh:
Yup.
I softmodded my Wii, but I wanted it to play burned wii games
(Backup copy of SSBB, other one was dirty and scratched) and it never seemed to work due to a -71 Disk could not be read error.
SSBB is dual layer which is harder for the wii.
so will this let me illegally warez games on my wii?
(User was banned for this post ("Warez" - Mr. Gestapo))
With this I may actually start playing my Wii again.
I got a friend to SoftMod my Wii, but he fucked it up. To be fair, I can play CD's, but I asked for USBLoader...
Is it worth me formatting the Wii and starting over? I'm extremely scared I'd brick it.

You don't have to format anything. That just means it's only softmodded a little bit - you probably have to install a few cIOS and stuff still. Do you have the Homebrew channel at all?

Just run HackMii and install everything you don't have. Also, USBLoader is illegal if you use it.

Kind of illegal, based on what nintendos website says. But it's possible.

Hacking your Wii in the first place is considered illegal by Nintendo.

Eh they hate piracy more.

Yeah I have the Homebrew channel. It's just everything is so confusing and I always have that near-constant thought of "Oh shit is it gonna brick?" in the back of my head.

Wii menu version?
[editline]02:01PM[/editline]
Well, follow this guide. http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/USB-Loader It's really detailed but confusing.
I don't really have any experience with USBLoader so I can't help you, but follow the guide and install dvdx and bootmii. It really helps.
I don't know how I lived without it. Don't know why Nintendo is such a prick against homebrew. Not like there's anything illegal on that channel.
Yeah apparently a wii with firmware 4.2 is also softmodable
Yeah apparently a wii with firmware 4.2 is also softmodable
Yeah all versions are, its just that 4.3 isn't compatible with Bannerbomb, which is the most common method.
Just use bannerbomb v2 for 4.2 and you will be fine.
Is it possible to run a burned Wii game (backup of PBR) on a soft modded Wii?
Did they crack the latest update yet? I cannot update at all, this totally gets rid of Homebrew channel, Bannerbomb, ect.
Mah 1TB external HD for game backups will be all for naught!

Using USBLoaderGX, an external HD, and a proper drive converter, people can use Wii isos to play as games without needing a disk, essentially not needing to buy the games at all.
I just back up my games :buddy:

They didn't exactly crack it, but Smash Stack and Indiana pwns still work so you can still use homebrew.
The day I softmodded my Wii was the best day ever for my Wii.
If you have a Wii there is no reason why you shouldn't do this.
I don't have wifi on my Wii or the wired connection adapter thing. (why they couldn't just fucking put an ethernet port on it is beyond me)
Is it still possible for me to put a CIOS on there and run backups?
If I do this, and then somehow fuck it up, is there a way of reformatting the Wii?
I don't know how I lived without it. Don't know why Nintendo is such a prick against homebrew. Not like there's anything illegal on that channel.
Well you can use it to cheat in online games.
Is it possible to run a burned Wii game (backup of PBR) on a soft modded Wii?
yes but make sure its burned to DVD-R and at 2x(if you cant burn it on 2x try 4x)
If I do this, and then somehow fuck it up, is there a way of reformatting the Wii?
I'm sure there is, but if you install bootmii you can bypass the system menu to go the homebrew channel, and download a mini disc channel so you can play your games. There is also a way to make it boot into opera to.
yes but make sure its burned to DVD-R and at 2x(if you cant burn it on 2x try 4x)
Is there anything special I have to download on my Wii? I have already installed Homebrew and a few apps.
I softmodded mine.
It's still a pretty useless console imho.
