So i just got a wireless receiver for my Xbox 360 controller and am using it with my steam games. So far the controller support is pretty shitty and doesn't feel like something i could live with. Do you guys know if there are plans for valve to improve their controller support? I was planing on replacing my Xbox with my PC but so far it looks like a no go :( The best controller support i can see is for L4D and it seemed to work okay.
No offence, but seriously - start using a keyboard and mouse. Yes it's different and strange and hard to use, but in the end it's worth it and your skill ceiling goes up exponentially.
I do use a keyboard and mouse but i wanted to use my computer for a home entertainment system and its hooked up to my big screen tv cause i wanted to play on a huge ass display :D but a keyboard and mouse seems odd sitting in my living room. For example i thought Skyrim on my big tv would look amazing :) Plus isn't this what Steam Big Picture Mode is aimed at doing?
Just get a wireless mouse to deal with the GUI and use the Controller in-game.

To be honest, if you want a plug and play living room experience you would be better off getting a console. The PC's greatest exclusives are made for the mouse/keyboard crowd. Most games with good controller support are console ports. Then again you already have a PC, and a wireless mouse is going to be a lot cheaper than a PS4. The real questions are: Which games do you want to play, how much money do you want to spend, and how much time are you willing to fiddle around with your computer?
I use a PS3 controller to emulate an Xbox 360 controller on some games, and it works fine for me. I even played L4D2 co-op and everything was fine. Magicka worked fine in the living room with 3 controllers as well. Are sure the controller support sucks?
There are a few games where using a controller would be much, much easier, like Dark Souls or Darksiders, but then you might as well just play it on a console.
You're being extremely vague. What's the issue? STEAM isn't supporting the controller, or the GAMES aren't supporting them? Not all games are compatible with controllers; this isn't steam's fault, it's the developer's. I used an Xbox remote to use Steam Big Picture to play Walking Dead, and it was fine. I don't see what Steam is doing wrong.
Yeah I've found pretty much every game that's a console port has fine controls with a 360 controller, and to be honest most games nowadays are console ports.
Steam big picture mode works great for navigating my steam library its just having to fiddle around with each game and getting it to work smoothly (some of the games are smooth with the controller and some just suck). I thought the introduction of steam big picture mode would allow me to use my PC as my living room entertainment system but so far its not looking good. Just wish it was a better supported option by developers. It really pisses me off because you spend a good chunk of change building a gaming rig and then have to shell out more for a fucking console to do the same thing on a living room TV. Why would any one want to waste money on a console when their PC is so superior? The only reason I went with an Xbox controller to try and play games on my TV is because it feels really weird using a mouse and keyboard in your living room unless you have a special coffee table that rises up or something. Just for the record game a lot on my computer with a keyboard and mouse it was just an idea of mine to replace my Xbox permanently.

The PC is for personal use (hence: personal computer). It was never intended to be a TV entertainment system, that's just what people conform it to do. That's why consoles exists, because they're designed for entertainment in the living room while PCs are designed for personal use. That's just the way it is. What are the games you're trying to play with a controller anyway? Because if they don't support controllers, I doubt it'll be much better on a console.
